50p Shaped Rear Tyre!

Featured Replies

Cor Blimey, not posted for ages......but I'm still totally lovin' my VRS! A truly great car but still surprisingly few on the road.

A couple of weeks ago I had 4 new Continental Sport Contact 2's fitted (£440 ). The rears were the original ones which had covered 50,000 miles . The rear near-side had worn like a 50p piece . There were six or seven distinct equi-distant bald patches about the size of your palm around the perimeter. These patches were really squared off making flat spots. I've not experienced any vibrations or poor handling. The blokes at the tyre fitters said that this was due to the wheel "skipping" over the undulations in the road surface, and this was probably due to the shock absorber losing its gas. I checked the shock absorber and there is no evidence of any oil loss.

I'm perplexed, wonder whether I'll need to replace the rear shock absorbers at the next service interval (£200 + fitting I believe ). I'd like to take the VRS to 100,000 miles. so it may be worth the fix however, if a MkII VRS becomes available before that time I may just be tempted. The issue I have is this, did the tyre square off over the past 50,000 miles, or did it happen during the last 5,000 miles? I can't afford a new £110 tyre every 5,000 miles .

What do you think? Many thanks......

£440  they saw you coming ;)

I have just paid £38 a corner for uniroyals including fitting. I i recently had 4 toyo t1-r's fitted for £250

£110 quid a corner  thats michelin teritory

50K is a good life for a shocker and the evidence of the rear tyres I would get front and rear shockers done - It's a matter of safety, if the wheel/tyre is off the ground then it's not gripping, steering or braking!

£££££'s  I was hoping the standard shocks would see 100k miles (my old Koni Sport C/Overs's had a "lifetime guarantee" which I believe lasted as long as I owned the vehicle). I agree with your point that all wheels/tyres should be making contact with the ground at all times. I'll have to see what the dealer requires for new ones on the back. Thanks for your valuable reply.

Please, where can I get Uniroyals fitted on my VRS for £38 each including fitting, balancing, valves and disposal? I'm VERY keen to use this company.

Jeez, I won't be able to sleep tonight knowing that I could have had Uniroyals at £38 each. I'd be grateful if skudmissile would respond at his soonest opportunity as it would be a great service to all VRS owners on this forum faced with the expense of new tyres. No more paying £440 for me, I'll use skud's supplier from now on. I just need to know the contact details. I wonder what percentage discount we could expect on a group buy , £30 each......£25 each? C'mon skud, reveal your source so we can all enjoy your good fortune.

ok its fabia size tyres, but what could you get on the octy II tyres?
