1.9 TDI does not ignite

Hello everyone,

I have a 1.9 TDI (2006) with ignition problems.

Description: I have realised that on the mornings when the car is "cold" it will turn on normally but, after 15 to 20 minutes of driving, it wont turn on again. I have to wait aroud 30 minutes so I can turn it on again. When this happens the ASR light always turns on; after my 30 minutes wait time, the light turns off and i can normally ignite the car.

My car has been in the shop for 10 days and they cant find the problem.

The scanner gives the fault codes 01314 and 18009. After doing some research in several webpages, seems that no one has the code 18009. The most accurate to the description the scanner gave is the 18010( I read them at ross tech), the difference is that the scanner descroption was "high voltaje".

They have test almost everypart of the car just in case it is not the computer(Engine Control Module) as code 01314 states. I have been trying to borrow a computer to try it on my car before buying a new one just in case it is not the computer without any luck.

One week before all this happened i had the a/c fixed, they remove all the section where the radio and a/c is to do this however, I alrady made the shop check all the wires around that section, they are all fine.

I really dont know what is going on with my car. Would anyone have any clue?

By the way i have been using a shop that only fixes skoda but is not the dealer shop. They dealer shop here in my country is B-A-D.

18009 is Relay for supply voltage terminal 30 (J317) implausible signal.

Does the fault come back after it is cleared?

The relay is in position B4 on the onboard power supply control unit. Check that the plugs on the control unit are seated correctly and none of the wires has been pulled out of the connector.

First of all thanks for your help rwbaldwin.

As a background, around 6 days ago in a different shop, they found 7 pins loose on the steering column switch. I took it to my brother(He works with electronics) so he could weld the pins and test the piece with a osciloscope. The problem was not solved.

The relay on the onboard power supply contro unit is working just fine. They also checked all the fuses and relays on the electric box, they are fine. I am going to take it to my brother so he can test it again, just in case.

The fault codes reappear if you clear them.

Anyone has any other idea?

If the relay itself is really OK, then it could be something inside the OBPSC or the steering column control unit or it could be the wiring between the units.

View measuring block 3.1 of the Steering Column Electronics Control unit to check the ignition switch. The digits will change as you move through the positions.

Ok i will try that on monday, thank you very much for you help rwbaldwin.

Another thing that i have realised is that not only the asr off light is on when you cannot start the car but also the electrical fan(not sure if this is the actual technical name, the fan that is close to the radiator) does not turn of for several minutes after closing the switch. Before i got the car into the shop it did not stop at all, or that is what I think because when i try to turn it on the battery was dead.

I have the same problem with my 05 1.9Td, have vcds and it comes up with intermittent ECU connection, once it starts goes no problem but will only start 1 in 20 times, when it isn;'t going to start the glow plug lights don't come on and ASR button is illuminated and the ASR warning light stays on, car will just crank, also fan will wind up and down if you leave the ignition to on for long enough, think is an ignition power switching relay supplying the ECU but am wondering which relay that might be!

If you found it was a relay which one was it?

Very similar problem to my octavia 04. 1.9 tdi pd.  When the car starts it runs well. But it starts just 1 in 15-20 times. ASR/esp button is illuminated and the ASR warning light stays on. The hotter weather - less possibility to start. Yesterday was +29, couldn't start my car at all. Today just +15 the car starts from the first attempt.

If you have no luck trying the above the usual causes of hot start failures are either a dying battery or starter motor as the starter has to turn over at a certain RPM when hot before the injectors will provide fuel. this is a safety related thing apparently but is switched off when the engine is cold

Battery is fine, I don't think is a starter motor, because sometimes the car doesn't start when engine is cold. When ignition on I know if I start my car or not: if ASR/ESP light on I will not start my car, if ASR/ESP light off It starts easily.

 3 months passed and my car still has the problem. Has anyone got any clue where is the problem. One thing was not mentioned here that VAG-COM can't connect to car's computer when there is ASR light on. 

The car became almost unuseable because you can't even use it for shopping.

Just a complete guess, what about a dodgy earth?

I think my first port of call would be the battery, is it still on original? if so a new battery might solve most of those.

The problem fixed. The cause was faulty ECU. It was re-manufactured and fitted. It cost me 480 pounds.
