Front fog lights and reverse gear?

Featured Replies

What on earth is the idea of the front fog lights coming on when you select reverse gear? I can't for the life of me think why they do it, but in the book it says they do as well, at first I wondered if it was a fault!

It is so you can see what the front may be swinging into as you go backwards. The Yeti ones are the same and I find it very useful.

Thanks, the headlights are on anyway, but thanks for that.

Just to confirm mine does this also - reversed out of drive earlier, and as I turned the fog light came on.

Yes it's a relatively new feature, it can be disabled with VCDS (and possibly the maxidot .... but I can't remember!) if you really do not like it, but personally I can't see why you would want to.

Have you seen the cornering lights do 'their thing' mid corner yet? :giggle:

That sure is weird having front fogs come-on when in reverse. It's logic sure beats me hands up.??emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

I agree. i don't understand why you would need more light when going backwards than forwards. i understand its so you don't swing round at hit the front, but if they think you need extra light then, surely they would think you would need more light when going forwards as well :wonder:

It is so the curbs are lit up right in front of the car which is just about the only thing front fog lights are good for.

Place the car in reverse and see how much extra light is now available right in front of the car

There is.When going forward the fog light on the side you are turning the steering wheel to illuminates to light up kerbs etc.

Yes, that's weird too!

I really like this feature. I have a narrow drive and putting it in reverse floods the drive with light. I never had a problem in my last car but the more light the better I think.

And I love the cornering lights for pulling in to the drive when someones parked on the road and I have inches to swing round between the house and wall.

My mother in law has now told me 3 times one on my lights isn't working though...

Cornering lights are very helpful when it is completely dark, both forwards and backwards :)

When you put in reverse the heating system also passes into the recirculation, so no exhaust gases are sucked into the cabin !

Never noticed that; now that IS clever!

Really blows your mind when you watch the headlights widening and then closing down again in heavy traffic, and in the fog this morning while on Auto (yes I switched them over again to use the fog lamps)

I can think of quite a few scenarios where you don't just look behind you when you reverse. And if you do, well good luck with that visit to the body shop! For example in a narrow street parallel parking: when you go back you have to keep an eye on your car's front corner to make sure your nose is not hitting the cars on the other side as you turn in! Reverse parking is done slowly (well I hope so anyway) so that spot meters ahead of your car where the headlights shine are really NOT where you want the light. You want the light much closer on on the corner where you might hit something. That spot is best covered by the fog lights. Also remember that when you reverse and your wheels are pointing left for example you generally tend to need the light on the right. So the normal way the cornering fogs work (by having the light in the direction you are turning) is the wrong way around. Hence both come on in reverse to cover all bases.

Clever these Germans aren't they?! (And no I might have a German sounding name but I'm not German! :giggle: )

My tendency is to use mirrors to reverse into a parking area, after some years working in a quarry using a tipper truck and the necessity to use mirrors for reversing to cliff edge tipping area.

Having the car near-side door mirror looking down at rear wheel area, gives me a clear indication how far-off the kerb the rear wheel is.

With the advantage of an interior mirror with a car, whats behind me and how close it is to me.

Further physical visual looking all round before setting off in reverse, if reversing out of a parking bay in a busy super-market area, is a must.
