Which tyres for vRS?

Featured Replies

My 2009 vRS is in need of new tyres. Searching here has given me some pointers but I would be interested to hear peoples opinions based on the following:-

I'm looking for 4 tyres 225/40 ZR18 92Y. Its currently wearing Michelin Pilot Exalto which all I can say is they were OK and were on the car when I got it.

I am looking for the best price / performance / wear / noise balance bearing in mind I do mainly motorway miles (25 - 30k per year)

When I had a MK1 vRS I favoured Toyo Proxes T1-R.getting 30k + out of a set

In the running so far are

  • Toyo Proxes T1-R @ £100 - £110 fitted
  • Vredestein Ultrac Sessantas @ £117 - £128
  • Goodyear Eagle Asymetric 2 @ £127 - £135

Has anyone got experience of Vredestein Ultrac Cento or Vredestein Ultrac Vorti also both around £117.

Kuhmo Hancook and Falkens keep getting mentioned, but how long will they last?

Its all a bit confusing so any constructive info gratefully received.

Uniroyal Rain Sports

Awesome in the dry, even better in the wet.

The End.

I have the sessantas and love them, very grippy quiet but don't last as long on the front as harder compound tyres. But I would prefer this than the big name tyres, superb grip in wet and snow too.

I use Toyo T1 Sports on mine and there is plenty of grip. Excellent so far in all weathers and not too bad in the snow.

I'm just back after getting tires on my Vrs, went for the semperits rain sports and there's very quiet so happy out :) there ment to be even better than kumho or hankook too ;)

Just stay away from most budget brands as there crap and noisy!

Got Ultrac Sessantas on as well, very good tyre in the wet and dry, a little noisier than the CS3's wear rate is good as well, they are wearing virtually the same as the Conti sport 3's that the car had from new so should see around 22K miles out of a set.....as for good in the snow, these are swept v profile so I very much doubt it as little or no lateral grooves to pick up on the snow

You don't want much then :giggle:

A tyre that offers the best grip oftens means that they are of a softer compound and therefore will wear quicker than a harder but less grippy tyre.

Judging by the massive variences in terms of overall life quoted on the many vRS tyre threads over the years I still haven't worked out whether it is down to the tyre or the individual driving style or a mix of both.

It certainly makes tyre choice all the more difficult!

Well, I guess when you put it like that I want something pretty middle of the road. Then beyond that its personal choice. So thats it then. Toyo Proxes T1-R from Event Tyres. Now all I got to do is order them....I hope they have stock or I'll have to start all over again!

There's just too much choice in this world!

Uniroyal Rain sport 2 absolutely fantastic in wet and dry. Holds the road like glue.

I had the Toyo's on a previous car, and they were really good, but they didn't last as long as i'd hoped.

I've not had them on the Octavia, but I'm a big fan of the Goodyear Eagle Asymetrics.

I tend to read the magazine tyre tests wherever possible. GY Assymetric2's have won a bunch of tests so I got some for mine. Only had them on the car for for a couple of months ~ 7k miles or thereabouts but initial impressions are very good. I'd definitely choose them over the other two options you mention. Sessantas are great but wear pretty quick, Toyos are not in the same league as the goodyears imo. I had Conti SC3's on previously which replaced the OE fitment Conti SC2's. Both good tyres, but on balance I'd say GY's win.

BTW the newer vredestein tyre (cento?) didn't do very well in the last test I read, not even as good as the older sessanta.. very strange.

Got them on my Vrs now, had them on my old Vrs and the one before that.

Had Secret Santas (sessantas) on my old B7 RS4, completely ruined the ride due to a very soft sidewall design (OE was Pirelli P Zero Rossos). My last Alpina only ever had PS2's which were very good.

Tyres very subjective, so for my 2p worth. Michelin Pilot Sports or BF Goodrich G Force Profiler (owned by Michelin). My reasoning is that the jigs created by all other tyre manufacturers utilise quite large sections of rubber in the mould, whereas Michelin/BFG use hundred of sections. Sidewall spring rates are more consistent and uniform, less likely to have heavy spots/light spots.

BF Goodrich G Grip multiplier (a subsidiary of Michelin) are of a similar tread pattern to the Goodyears and are an excellent tyre. About £110 a corner.

How would a soft sidewall ruin the ride? It's usually a hard compound tire that gives a harsh ride lol

May be too late but T1Rs are very grippy but a) don't last that long, and B) are quite noisy.

I have Assymetric 2s on my vRS at the mo, and they're fantastic. Good grip, much quieter than the Toyos and seem to be lasting well too.

I've had 20k on mostly twisty A roads from my el cheepo Maxxis MAZ1s.

They're pretty borderline now and I'll change before the end of the month. Actually have some money I could spend on dearer rubber but these have been easily as good as the Avons I had before for £30 a tyre less.
