VRS rear light tinting

Featured Replies

Thanks to Freddie (Confide) for sharing the secrets and pattern for this job. Been looking forward to changing them as I've hated the colour from new.

First remove the lights and clean them thoroughly with Isopropanol (or equivalent)

Then flat them down with 2000 grade wet & dry paper and they should look cloudy like this.

Then using quality masking tape such as 3M (do not use cheap stuff) tape the area you want to be seen.

I have done a indicator & brake light test already, so the following instructions do not obliterate the colour at all. All lights are easily visible day and night. I'll get some night shots done soon.

I used a precision craft knife for the 'corners' or any trimming. Just take your time and don't press hard.

Remember, the edges MUST be completely flat with no wrinkles etc. The finished edge will depend on this, so take note !

Next apply the tint spray in smooth left to right strokes. Don't be tempted to rush this, just one coat at a time (I used 6 in total for this effect) and leave 10 minutes between coats. This is important, don't rush application or it'll run.

Finally, peel the masking tape away carefully and slowly. If you had patience and smoothed the edges along with the decent masking tape, you'll have a nice neat edge.

When these coats are dry, time to laquer the entire lens. I used 3 coats, again, wait for each one to dry !

Here's the fitted lenses. They are finished with 2500 grade wet & dry paper, then polished with decent polish. Sorted :sun:

Nice and tidy Johnny!

RichF, that looks abit too easy almost!

Got a spare pair off taillights, gonna test it on them!

Nice work jonny. They came out great. Please take some pics at night, would love to see the effect. They are kinda Audiesque I like that.

Would love to tackle mine but I'm not sure I would like to paint them. Maybe use film cut to shape you've done just in case I want to get back my original taillight.

I'm not going back.

Even so, some thinners will remove everything in no time if needs be.

I'll drop a picture tonight for comparison.

Excellent work Jonny, they look really good. Sadly I lack any sort of artistic flair or ability so will probably keep mine standard rather than having something look like a 3 year old did it!

Apologies to bump an old thread, but will these fail an MOT?

Absolutely not, this shade allows the light to pass through easily. When they're on (day or night) there's no difference.

If you're in doubt, look at the pictures above.

As long as the reflector isn't tinted too. Otherwise, dig out the thinners ;-)

Great news, gonna give this a try myself then.

I did think about the reflectors, might mask those off when I do mine too.

Thanks for the guide Jonny!

Yeah, that's true. I didn't want this, so I have a reflector fitted (3M reflective) to the length of the number plate holder bottom.

If you shine a light on it, you can see it from space :giggle:

If you are tinting, its as well to keep the Reflectors as they need to be,

2, & at the sides.

Helps with a traffic stop or a MOT.
