front upper Control arm replacement and 'that' pinch bolt......

Featured Replies

Hi all , found this really useful video for the audi a6. Much of it relates to the Superb. It's san excellent tutorial:

Great find

If only....

The A4/A6 both have an aluminium steering knuckle unlike the forged steel one fitted to the Superb and the VWs. The bolt rusting problem is nothing like as severe on the Audis because one component (the knuckle) is rust free. On the Superb, the bolt and the bore in the knuckle rust absolutely solidly together.

Just take the pinch bolt out annually and grease both it and the bore, and there will be no problems. Let it rust in and you will regret it.

This has to be the most stupid bit of detail design achieved by anyone in a suspension system. The unplated steel components are dead in line with the water thrown off the front tyre - complete with entry slots to make sure it rusts solid.

Complete numpties.

Agreed, however, if this helps one person get the bolt out then I'm happy

I guess I was lucky getting the nearside one out without a massive amount of trauma, even though it wasn't greased (it is now!) I'm looking forward to replacing both CV boots this weekend, so the O/S one will require removal

The o/s does t require it's removal.

Just undo the upward pointing 18mm nut on the lower arm and you can swing the hub out enough to remove the shaft.

If you don't have an air hammer an alternative is to use a big bar and a good socket on the bolt head and swing on it until the head snap's off.

Then tighten the nut with the same bar and this will draw the remains of the bolt out.

The nut and washer from the bottom balljoint makes a lovely packer for when the nut runs out of thread.

Lots of penetrating oil is a must before starting this one!!

luckily mine has been out regularly by the looks of it so the pinch bolt came out with a bit of bashing with a hammer and drift, didn't take the strut out to change the arms but had to use a spring compressor to give some space to get one of the retaining bots out. took about 15 minutes per arm
