Whistle when cold - Normal? VIDEO ADDED!

Featured Replies

Hi, i have a 1.2 tsi 105ps monte, with less than 600 miles on the clock.

It has devolped a strage 'whistle' when cold, doesn't sound like a turbo whistle not really sure what it is. Only way i can describe it is that it sounds like squeeling brakes. It does it on a stand still and when on the move BUT only when cold and only between 1k abd 1.5k?

Has anyone else had this? Shall i inform skoda?

Thanks,

Dave

If it was me and I had bought a new car i would be back at the dealers for any slight noise :)

No whistle when cold, after 2 years and 18K km

Turbo whistle usual heard on gear change or acceleration?

Are you shure its a whistle and not a ringing type noise mine does this its the fuel at high presure. if you look no top of the engine you will see a round metal cylinder with a big nut on with pipes coming out of it the noise comes from there. My son says ive got a budgie under the bonet. If you think it is not let dealer have a look.

i spose it could be clased as a rining lol. Ill check what you've said tomorrow. Either way its really annoying and didnt used to do it!!

Might log it with dealer just incase!

certainly sounds like he is!! :giggle:

A flute connected in line with the manifold?

More like a penny whistle 8) , very strange definately rattle metal 2 metal and sounds like a air hose leak ?

  • Author

sounds really rattley in video, in life it's not so bad, not sure if its got worse or not :S i'm going to book it in, at least its logged with skoda then if somehting does go kaput!

Sounds like someone blowing across the top of an empty bottle !! Get it looked at I'd say

Get it looked at if you feel it needs to be.

Check the airbox is clipped properly & that all hoses and pipes appear to be secure.

My suggestion is to get the car run in a little.

Let the belts and pulleys get some use & things wear/stretch a little & settle.

Pipe may have come loose i had the car 4 hours before had to take it back due to ruff idle and stalling. Was vacum pipe that had come off

Squeeky gate kind of sound.

Is there a throttle cable or something like that that needs a grease on these things?

  • Author

nope no throttle cable. it's definatly something more mechanicle than a cable..

it's going to skoda next friday and staying for the weekend whilst i bugger of to the isle of wight in wifeys polo!

Oh God!!! I had the same sound while accelerating having a/c fan on but a/c compressor off at temperatures below -1 or -2. As soon as I turned the fan off that sound stopped. Same happened as soon as temp was greater than -1 C no matter if fan was on. Never found what this was. So I am in great interest in your case, and I will keep an eye over this topic.

well picked it up from skoda yesturday. They said 'Theres nothing wrong with it matey'. Clearly plugged it in and nothings came up so they've put it to the side. Ovbiously it should not be making this noise when its cold and it's getting on my nerves. Whats the next step?

Another dealer 2nd opinion, my tsi doesnt do that

Or if your dealer has another 1.2 Tsi ask him to start it up and do a comparison?

The other halfs work friend has a white monte that she orderd about a week before me and hers makes this noise too. Hmmm

Have you guys had your cars since new?

No whistle on the courtesy car with 2000miles on the clock .

To me it sounds like a leak in combustion air delivery system. When you opened the throttle more and closed it quickly it was doing this "double whistle" type of sound. this would indicate to me that it whistles on boost and then on vacuum. Check for loose hoses, split hoses, badly fitting filter element, cracks in the IC (rather hard to do really). Smoke test is the best way for checking your air intake system.

I had split pressure side hose on my Lupo. They took the car apart looking for it as it only developed at high boost under load otherwise they were not able to see the split - says something about their skills...

it does this noise between 1k and 1.5k so i don't think it's to do with boost. It's also intermittent. It seems to happening less often now so im to to fussed, no loss in power either so ill see how it goes, at least its logged with skoda and they've said its fine, so if something does go pop they can be held to blaim (touch wood).
