Annoying Rattle at 1500 rpm

Featured Replies

I have a rattling sound that I can hear when I'm on the throttle at 1500 rpm (which is the rpm in 4th at 30mph, so pretty annoying!), had it for a while, before I got my bushes, brakes, cambelt and water pump replaced. Can anyone think of what it could be? Anyone else had the same noise?

its the car saying change down a gear ..... and lets gooooo

Lol could do that but may get in trouble from the plod! Seriously though I'm hoping it's nothing serious. Got a service and MOT due at the end of April.

Bump. Can anyone help?

Are we talking interior rattle?

Engine rattle?

Gearbox/clutch rattle?

Suspension rattle?

As said about it could be the fact that your clutch won't like accelerating from such low revs in such a high gear.

The rattle could be the sound of you fly wheel dying :)

I had this a couple of times on my Superb, the first was diagnosed incorrectly as a loose exhaust mounting bracket but the actual problem was a loose air filter housing, obviously the result of a corner cutting grease monkey! :mmm:

I'd say it could be the exhaust undershield, quite common and easy to determine

It's definitely coming from the engine bay. I'm not accelerating really, just keeping a constant speed. I'll check the things suggested though. Thanks.

I had same rattle mine turned out to be plastic engine cover rattling on top of black plastic intercooler pipe bit of foam cable tied and no more rattle

Check the gearchange cables from the stick to gearbox, they can come loose from their holding clips, I used nylon ties to secure then from touching the bottom of the bulkhead/floor area.

Sounds like mine, bet its the dmf.

Development! After fitting a new air filter last night the noise has pretty much gone! There is a noise still there, but it's really quiet, so may be just the normal noise of the engine. Don't know whether the old air filter was causing the noise (a Pipercross panel filter) or it was indeed the air filter housing that someone had suggested (I checked that the housing was screwed on tight) so never mind! Thanks all.

I've still got this rattling noise. Mentioned it to the guy who did my MOT a month ago. He thought it was the turbo but said it was nothing to worry about. Boost pipes looked OK too. I've heard failing turbos and it's definitely not making that sound but it's still annoying, especially when driving around town, when I'm in the 1500-2000rpm rev range most of the time.

have you tried taking the engine cover off?? mine used to rattle when the back rubber wore down ...

Tried driving without the engine cover today, but the noise is still there. Hasn't been as noticeable as it usually is but it seems to vary day by day. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Mine is the glove box so annoying might superglue it shut!

Does it do it at rest with no load? Is it a regular, rhythmic noise or more akin to random bricks in a cement mixer?

Only does it when I'm moving on throttle. Goes up and down with the engine revs.
