Creaking sound from front of car-any ideas?

Featured Replies

Hi guys, please could anyone help? I've got an Octy vRS mk2 FL on a 12-plate with 21k miles on it and it appears to be misbehaving. I'm getting an intermittent creaking sound from the front of the vehicle when I drive over a speed bump or reasonable undulation in the road. More worryingly, i've noticed that the steering/handling feels vague and a bit 'loose' especially at higher speeds. This tends to be more noticeable and frequent in colder conditions - I.e. first thing in the morning. It's been with Skoda but they can't find anything and consequently it's not being remedied. I've had this problem since Christmas time and the tracking has been checked and no issues there. Please can anyone help? This is driving me nuts as I can't see any obvious damage/problems. Anyone else had similar problems?

Would have thought something like a CV joint initially but this should be picked up easily by the dealer if it was

Steering rack i bet.

rubber on the top of a shock ubsorber springs- may do a cracking sound

Creaking over bumps is wishbone bushes. They will pass every test under the sun but replace them and the car will be creak free, and feel much tighter to drive. The looseness over broken surfaces that you get through the steering wheel will also go.

Oh and you can get the same symptons again within a year if you live in an area with a lot of speed bumps. They are prone to it and I don't think there is a fix.

Many thanks guys for your help on this, you've given me something to go at. I presume when people are saying replace the wishbone bushes they mean uprate them with nylon ones etc?

Another vote for the wishbone bush from me. Had it on the previous octy, took a while for the garage to find it...but once replaced, silenced the creaking totally.

Eventually it would end up knocking rather than creaking which would be easier to diagnose.

Had the same issue in October 2011 on my 55 reg Octy and as a result the wishbones needed changing to pass my MOT, so changed them and the noise went. Got slight clunking now going over speed bumps so going to change the ARB bushes and drop links all round.

The uprated polybush style ones creak too! I spray mine with WD40 every few weeks.

Try GT85 (?) as it has ptfe in it I believe which should make it last longer before the creaking comes back.

My lower arm bushes failed the last MOT (no noises, but slight clunk when turning the steering wheel when stationary), so I replaced both lower arms.....so completely new bushes all round on the lower arms........drove down the road and although the front end felt a lot tighter the bushes creaked!

They still creak......I think it's pot luck sometimes with bushes.

Grease em up!

Creaking could be a missing battery fastner.
