Octavia tdi cutting out at roundabouts

Recommended Posts

Hi, have had this happen 4 or 5 times since buying the car ( about 8 months ago). Car is 56 reg octavia vrs tdi, when slowing down at roundabouts or junctions the car loses all power and battery light shows, car starts first turn of the key everytime. Today it did it at a roundabout then 2 minutes later at a junction then again at a roundabout 10 minutes later. It was fine after that but will have to find out what is causing this and wondering if anyone has any ideas? Would there be any fault codes stored?

You should some fault codes stored. The 109 relay is the ECU power relay, when it goes wrong all kinds of craziness can ensue. But I don't think the mkII has exactly the same relay.

Worth finding someone near you with VCDS. A scan should shine some light on the problem.

Ok cheers will try and get someone asap as it is pretty dodgy when you don't notice it's cut out, was going to take it to Skoda dealer but they want silly money to plug in a machine and probably tell me they can't find anything.

Perhaps a clogged fuel filter.

It will allow less than full flow so peak demands will result in poor acceleration and top speed/power.

Coming off the power at roundabouts/junctions may just be the trigger to briefly starve the engine enough to stall.

As suggested, get it scanned and see what IT thinks is wrong.

Without knowing all the specifics it's not easy.

A generic OBD scan would be the first step and if that shows a blank then a more in depth VCDS scan should show something.

Assuming the engine is fine otherwise, running smooth and even, pulls strongly when floored in 3rd up an incline when max fuel is demanded and reaches max rpm freely then I think it's safe to rule out under fueling.

It would suggest to me a sensor somewhere has got an issue, poor connection/dirty/faulty.

But it's early and I'm not Scotty without coffee!

Get it scanned and let us know the results.

Interesting. Mines been doing similar over a period of time but only once every 4-6 weeks or so but as per the OP, when I slow to junctions or roundabouts, basically when I change down to 2nd gear, it stalls. Starts immediately.

Also when using cruise control the other day (set to 60), going up hill and it started slowing down, cruise was still engaged though but had to Chang down to 403rd to get any power... Been fine since and that was over a month ago. All linked?

Let me know if things improve re new sensor or whatever. Thanks

Mines was big gaps inbetween aswell just the one time that it's happened so close together, will post anything I find out.

Yeah it had it done years ago with the first owner can't remember when exactly, it wasn't marked down on the service book but I phoned up Skoda uk and was told it had been done

You might find the car will really begin to suffer with cold starting issues when the temperatures begin to fall this winter. I'm guessing at 8 months you haven't run it through a winter yet?

This thread is a bit heavy but there are lots of examples of random stalling and poor cold starting from owners who have had the injector recall done. You'll be able to see my tale of woe too...

  • 2 weeks later...

Meeting someone local with vcds tomorrow evening so hopefully can find out what the problem is, is it just a case of plugging in and scanning the car for any fault codes or is there other things we should be looking for?

Immediately my first port of call was to check the data on the engine controller, but there were no fault codes and nothing from the measured values. Now i've been on Ross-tech most of this morning to try and figure out what Malfunction 0010 means but had no luck.

During last night I took Dave's car for a test drive and it pull and drives really well and it's previous owner has looked after the car which this shows throughout.

I'm stumped Guys...

I would save the scan and then clear the codes and see what comes back.

Looks like you may well require a new alarm module - the internal batteries go after about 6 years and cause issues - can result in flat main battery if you are unlucky - use search as it has been discussed a number of times.

Those central electrics errors may suggest that you have a damp central electrics module, but could also mean that the car has been on with the rear clusters removed, so clear them and see if anything comes back.

Other things that could cause stall issues like that are the lift pump in the tank and the tandem pump which acts as a fuel pump and vacuum pump.

If there was a relay 109 issue I'd expect some other electrical errors probably on the Engine ECU and possibly loss of communication in the ABS ECU.

Will have a look at the links when I get home tonight, has the alarm battery being flat been known to cause stalling problems? Not long after I got the car there was a few days where the alarm would go off for no reason and I had been advised was probably the alarm battery was on its way out and had been going to replace this but the alarm stopped going off so didn't bother changing it, is there any way to check if this is the problem?

Those central electrics errors may suggest that you have a damp central electrics module, but could also mean that the car has been on with the rear clusters removed, so clear them and see if anything comes back.

Other things that could cause stall issues like that are the lift pump in the tank and the tandem pump which acts as a fuel pump and vacuum pump.

If there was a relay 109 issue I'd expect some other electrical errors probably on the Engine ECU and possibly loss of communication in the ABS ECU.

I tried to clear any codes that may have been there, but weren't appearing as a matter of course and re-ran the scan with the same issue appearing for Engine: Malfunction 0010 as displayed in my OP.

The engine dying off at idle would suggest a fuel supply fault, however, as mentioned I had the car out on a test drive and it pull like a steam train throughout the gears.

My only suggestion that I could make at the time.... as ridiculous as some of you may find it..... would be Dave's driving style so to say. He's only had the car 8 months and previous to his Octy was a Mondeo. Now before anyone thinks about jumping on this as an insult I'll clarify my point.

After I bought my Octy F/L Vrs I suffered from "New car syndrome" where paranoia sets in at ever squeak, bump, rattle and stall at a set of lights. At one point I was convinced my DMF was gubbed at 20k purely because the car shuddered at take off when it was cold...... Long story short a bit more revs and better clutch control saw that problem away. The point I'm making is that we as owners sometimes become convinced there is a problem purely because we read into things too much, and start to create links to others experiences.
