Pre 2015 Engines : Are they really that bad?
The early ones ( dates already posted) rattled whistled leaked and had hatchback doors that didn't often fit properly. My 2014 had the endemic squeaky front suspension and a few minor rattles but was otherwise very good. The build quality of the my 2018 model is definitely better, just a shame they binned off the lovely petrol engines for the awful 1.0TSI.

Pre 2015 Engines : Are they really that bad?
The chassis is a mix of low tech Golf & Polo bits. Its not very confidence inspiring in standard form to be honest, you can feel it lurching in bumpy bends taken at speed and the body can be felt twisting. The ride gets bad reviews, but the motoring media tarred it with that brush at the 2012 launch and never bothered to revise their opinion. The steering on early cars was poor too, but both suspension and steering were redesigned in late 2013. My 2014 and 2018 spec cars both came on factory 17s and both rode acceptably, although its very tyre dependent. The ride is widely regarded as better on 16s or even 15s but they do look a little small.

Pre 2015 Engines : Are they really that bad?
The Rapid is exceedingly backward, or low tech, in fact, being a parts bin job mostly based on Golf Mk 4 (Replaced in Europe in 2003). I don't think it was ever really aimed at Western Europe, but at developing markets, much like PSA's crummy C-Elysee / 301, but if bought cheap its perfectly adequate transport for 4. My 2 brand new ones cost a total of 25k which I think is amazing value.

Pre 2015 Engines : Are they really that bad?
The 1.2 TSI/ 105 is the nicest 4 cylinder I have ever driven. Period. Smooth, more powerful than its 105PS rating (independent dyno tests of stock cars showing 116 -120PS can be viewed around the internet) That said its almost impossible to hit the EU mpg figures for the 105 even driving like a nun. The 86PS version is more torquey and more economic in the real world. Down side. The turbo actuator seized at 26000 miles resulting in a replaced turbo. This is not a one off. My 1.0 TSI has this year had the same failure at 15000 miles. Diesels? Newer versions of the 1,6 are much more refined these days but the 2013 Rapid TDI I drove sounded like a concrete mixer. In comparison the 1.4 TDI sounds like a broken concrete mixer. After driving a silky smooth 1.2 TSI I could never have bought an oil burner with its lack of refinement, worse ride/handling/tyre wear etc. But the 1.6 TDI is ultimately the most tuneable engine in the range I think, if thats what you want. I think the diesel injector horror stories on here have all been about the Indian market Rapid, a different car altogether.

The F1 drivers book of excuses must be getting a bit thin... especially for those on the front row. Both RBR and Racing Point have announced that problems with the front wing caused their grid-leading drivers to be completely rubbish on Sunday. I can understand RP trying to soften the blow with the bosses boy Lance - because he must be gutted at throwing away his big chance, but Verstappen's tone talking about his wing seemed to be blaming the team for losing the race...a race that I feel he should have dominated from the front row. I bet Marko still thinks he's got the best driver in F1 mind you, despite this weeks glaring evidence to the contrary.

Lowering The Rapid
The "A pic of your car" thread also had pictures of a silver Rapid Connect on 18 inch Rotas and OEM 30mm drop spings, and a Spaceback on 8.5x18 BBS LM with a 35mm/40mm drop F/R.

Lowering The Rapid
Member @BossFox had a very early Rapid on 18s and lowered springs. Pictures were on here. I think searching the Rapid forums for "Yellow" would find it way back in 2012/13.

So how did the other contenders for "best driver in F1" do this week? Max spinning to 6th place? Charles giving up 2nd ( and 3rd ) with 2 corners to go? Daniel nowhere? Bottas way out past nowhere. So Hamilton can qualify a Mercedes that just didn't work 5.5 seconds off pole and 2 rows behind Max and still win by half a minute. What a psychological blow for all the others. Except Perez.

Come on down... SERGIO MICHEL PEREZ MENDOZA who managed it in 2017... and still hasn't got a drive for 2021???

Guess who was the last driver to score 100 outside of the big 3???
-
2020 F1 Discussion
Just noticed Sergio has racked up 100 points this year despite missing 2 races. That's quite amazing for anyone outside the top 3 teams. Last year Carlos was best of the rest with 96.

Maybe. He is Mr reliable. Points since Monza Perez 66 Max 59.

Racing Point drivers. Scores since Monza. Perez 66 points, Vettel 17 points, Stroll 2 points. Perez sponsors also bring in something like $15 million? $20 million? but the points he is scoring on track are going to win more than that in prize money too. You'd have to be mad to let him go.... Meanwhile at the front, if Red Bull want to be taken seriously as contenders by anyone (but particularly the Verstappen's) shouldn't they win easily when Merc qualify 6 / 9?

Pirelli weren't told the Istanbul Park track was being resurfaced. They've made and brought the wrong tyres as a result. No wonder the teams are struggling to switch on this choice of compounds.

Max fastest again FP2. Merc have moved up to P3 P4 behind LeClerc.

Cold morning in Istanbul. Hardly anyone getting the tyres to work. Bottas 9th, Hamilton 15th, and the field covered by 14 (fourteen) seconds between P1(Max) and P20(George). Fourteen!

Since Monza, Vettel has scored 2 points, Lance Stroll has scored 0 points. A certain Senor Sergio Michel PΓ©rez Mendoza has scored 48 points in the same time period. Indeed he has scored in every race he started this year, and is currently sat on 82 points from 11 starts versus the 75 points from 25 starts total score by the other 2. So Aston Martin, how's next year's line up choice looking? Same question to Red Bull in fact?

Next year's calendar out now. Lets see all the progress Liberty are making with their expansion plans and investment. Miami - cancelled Hanoi - cancelled Rio - staying at Interlagos. OK... Ooh I forgot. A not-at-all-controversial new race is planned in Jeddah. What with Turkey back on this week, Russia already a feature, I wonder what other authoritarian regimes Liberty will cut deals with? PyongYang GP anyone?? - 2020 F1 Discussion
