  1. Just spotted this thread. If it helps - in my experience, driving a lot in France, I need the Eurolites stickers on my Kamiq that clearly does not have any on-board tech to address the issue. (The headlights appear to be perfectly adjusted and have never attracted any adverse attention in the UK). The one time I forgot to get any Eurolites, on a long autoroute trip at night it was embarrassingly apparent that I was seriously ****ing off and inconveniencing every truck driver travelling in the opposite direction. Must be something about the viewing height from a truck cab and the light-spread of a UK spec car. Virtually without exception every one of them that came past - literally hundreds over the course of the journey - was flashing me and blaring their horns. Winding down the height adjuster made no difference. I was mortified, but had to push on to get to my rendez-vous. Lesson learned - I never venture out on French roads without stickers.
  2. nta16 Thanks for that. Food for thought.
  3. Update. The 'low battery' warnings continued with ever-increasing frequency despite further attempts to recover it with the C-Tek, so I decided to replace it. I had planned to DIY but a recurrence of my back problems made that a bit problematic. So, today I went to an independent VAG specialist who swopped the battery (I never determined what brand it was) for a Yuasa. I now have peace of mind but I am still a bit miffed that the original battery - to my mind - had such a short life.
  4. It's very clear. The reason why the authorities/manufacturers endeavour to prevent the display of videos on the infotainment screen are self-evident. Despite your implied claim that you are a responsible individual, any attempt to tinker with this inevitably leads onto a slippery slope. If you have responsibility for children, then you are an adult. Act like one, and if you have no better way of passing your time, then watch your videos on your phone.
  5. Where to start? On reflection I won't bother. As long as he stays in Romania.
  6. I get those nice people at Autoglass to put on new wipers each time they replace the windscreen. Twice so far !
  7. Thank you for your responses. Food for thought there. If I can make the time, I will look at it more closely.
  8. Thanks both - quick replies too. So, cars get 'smarter', battery life gets shorter - ain't progress wonderful. It's got to go through the C Tek cycle now, so out of interest tomorrow I'll check the rested voltage and also the charging voltage. For convenience I'll most likely get a DIY battery delivered from Tayna and get a nearby VAG independent to re-programme the system - but, just out of curiosity, does anyone know what the dealer would charge for battery replacement?
  9. A couple of weeks back, my Kamiq, three and a bit years old, + 16k miles, started giving a 'Low Battery' warning. I wasn't unduly alarmed as it had not been used much recently and the bad weather inevitably had meant a heavy demand on the electrics. I put it on charge overnight and next day all seven indicator lights on the C Tek charger were lit and the warning had gone. That day, when the Stop/Start kicked in, I realised that I could not recall it operating for quite some time, a sure sign that the battery had been low. So, all was now well! Yesterday, after quite a long run (without any extra electrics switched on) I suddenly twigged that the Stop/Start was not coming on. Today the rested battery is giving a reading of only 12.16v. I have put it back on charge and this time I will note the reading after the charge is completed. What does the hive mind think? Surely it's a bit early for the battery to fail, or could it be an alternator issue?
  10. Assuming I have correctly understood the question, - yes, my Nextbase cable is long enough to follow the route that you have described.
  11. As far as engine/transmission is concerned, - if you can, get a test drive of the 1.5 DSG. I had been a diesel/manual man for donkey's years, but then the leg problems of old age and the anti-diesel lobby's antics, led me to conclude that a complete change of drivetrain would be a good idea. I am so glad I did - the combination of the two is perfect for me and , despite the Kamiq's staid appearance, it can be quite a hoot when you floor it in 'S'. It is very comfortable for my regular 600 mile trip, economy is good and it is quite a relaxing car to drive. Have a test drive - you will be pleasantly surprised.

    Mudflaps

Mudflaps are not a magic solution. This time of year the car gets filthy regardless and the presence or not of mudflaps makes little difference to the amount of dirt thrown up over the bodywork - but I fitted mudflaps to my Kamiq, and to my previous cars, specifically in order to protect the sills from the abrasion of the gravel, grit etc that abounds on the roads in my very rural area. One glance at the gritty slurry caking the inside of the mudflaps is sufficient to confirm to me that they are doing their job.
  13. I don't think that it's wise to make this into a big issue. There has been a past thread on the subject of the recommended tyre pressure for the Kamiq - as displayed inside the filler flap. I can't remember the figure - and I'm not going out in the dark and cold to take a look - but there was a consensus that the recommended pressure was unrealistically high (in the real world it cannot be an absolute number - there are innumerable individual variables that can affect it). I have settled on 33psi as the figure that gives me a comfortable (i.e. not rattly) ride, good adhesion and no obviously undue wear. Each individual car will be different dependant on usage, tyre make, loading etc. It's largely a case of 'suck it and see'.
  14. I think that is one of the many annoying features that the European Union nanny state insists upon, and that's where we get our cars from. At least its less of a pain in the arse than Lane Assist.
  15. Cannot answer the question but - as I am sure you already suspect- you can virtually guarantee that a Skoda dealership would charge top dollar to replace with the same crap discs that cause the problem. I am sure that an independent would supply and fit Brembos for much less money. If you do get some prices it would be really interesting if if you could post them here.
  16. My car has just been for its first MOT. Prior to that, I took it in for my trusted independent garage and tester to look at the discs as I was very unhappy with their condition - they appear to be badly corroded and look like ****e. (As previously mentioned on here, I intended that he should replace them with non-OEM items). I was surprised when he told me that he was certain that the rear brakes would be up to scratch and that he could not see any point in replacing them. In the event, when I went for the scheduled test, the brake readings on the test equipment were perfect! He confirms that rear brakes in general only provide 25% of the braking, and on a lightweight car like a Kamiq - especially an automatic - they do sod all. He advised that I should continue to apply the hand-brake from time to time to clean up the surface of the discs to address the cosmetic aspect, otherwise I should ignore what really was not an issue!
  17. Agree about the - rear - discs, however much to my surprise, by utilising occasional applications of the handbrake whilst in motion, as suggested on here, I have managed to get my rear discs back into some semblance of a reasonable appearance. You shouldn't have to resort to that, but if you can remember to do it, it does alleviate the issue.
  18. I can see that it is frustrating having something that should work but doesn't - although it looks probable that it's a deficiency on the part of the phone, not of the car - but I do struggle to see what real improvement Android Auto will make to my life! Perhaps my needs, or my imagination, are a bit limited, but infotainment already allows me to use my phone and access media player which is all that I really need. Having looked at a couple of Youtube videos extolling the virtues of Android Auto, I really cannot see what the fuss is about so I made a conscious decision not to activate it. It may be a bit slicker, but do any of us really, truly need its marginal benefits which must be a further distraction from the important responsibility of driving?
  19. I cannot see why it should make a difference - but try something! When I first acquired my Kamiq - my first automatic - I too noticed that the stop-start rarely operated, although it didn't particularly worry me. However, when one day I changed my body position whilst stationary and unintentionally pressed harder on the brake pedal, the engine suddenly stopped! After experimenting a few times, it seemed to be the case that if you only applied light pressure that nevertheless was enough to hold the car stationary the stop-start would be inoperative, but apply more pressure and it came into play. It does not make sense to me, plus it is a pain in the arse pressing so hard that it is uncomfortable, so most of the time I don't bother.
  20. Frankst 237 I fitted my Nextbase without any problems in finding an ignition-switched supply. I can't imagine that your car could be any different. Normally I would have gone outside and checked which fuse I piggy-backed off - but due to back issues I am currently incapable of bending over! I did a quick search here. I can't post the link, but I have copied a previous post from this forum that hopefully may assist you: orry for hijacking this thread, let me know if I should open a new one. I got the the Garmin Mini parking cable. It has three connections: ground, permanent live and accessory. I was testing with a multimeter today and found some suitable empty slots with no fuses in them but they still have the contact points. Battery always on (as measured) 12 - Heated steering wheel ( I don't have it ) 24 - Phonebox, GSM antenna, USB connection, Infotainment screen ( why empty? ) 32 - Passenger belt tensioners 34 - Driver belt tensioners Accessory 45 - Windscreen wiper ( why empty? ) 46 - Seat heating - rear ( I don't have that ) I tested with 46 & 32 and the camera seems to work fine. I chose those two because I have one mini "piggy-back" connector and one standard size. My guess is that the " passenger belt tensioners" is some advanced feature that my car isn't equipped with, but I'm not 100% sure. I can definitely use 12 as the always on, I definitely don't have a heated steering whell, but it's a mini size fuse, so I'd have to buy another mini "piggy-back" connector. Do you guys think it's okay to use 46 & 32 for the camera?
  21. Hi sussamb I'm crap at links. Does this work? mobi.aliexpress.com/item/4000785625344.html (I think the euro price may have risen - only slightly - since I ordered mine). If you get a kit I can give you a tip or two for fitting it.
  22. Resurrected thread, - I’ve finally got it sorted. Whoopee! I was intending to get the Kopacek kit, as suggested on here, but when I looked closely they said that they were wary of despatching stuff to the UK – which I found surprising as I thought they would have sorted out any post-Brexit issues by then. So it went on the back-burner and then I got tied up with more important things. A few weeks ago I had a fresh look. Google took me to Aliexpress where there were three or four bonnet strut kits on offer, all seemingly from the same supplier at wildly different prices – and all had a note that they would not despatch to a UK address. That had me mystified – how come even the Chinks are now avoiding trade with the UK! Then, with a flash of inspiration, knowing that I would soon be going on a trip to France, I amended my personal information to show a French address. Suddenly they were quite happy to despatch to me, albeit with the usual 6/7 week delivery date, which would make the logistics a bit tricky. Then I noticed a different advert - that also was the cheapest at the euro equivalent of £27 and that claimed it would be fulfilled from Poland within a week. So I waited and placed an order on the evening before I finally set off. Good job I held back - it arrived in only four days - and from Germany, not Poland. The kit was of perfectly good quality (obviously time will tell), I got it fitted within thirty minutes and it works a treat – all for the princely sum of £27. Opening the bonnet is now a doddle, involving no effort.
  23. Cheers for the response. Thinking about it, rather than getting into a debate with the Skoda dealer over specifying non-OEM parts, I will get my trusted local independent to do the job - he will most likely have a preferred disc supplier and I will go along with that.
  24. Hiya, sussamb There have been no consequences to the extra horn - other than you can actually hear it now. I can't imagine what adverse effect it could possibly have on the alarm. I cannot now remember where I read about this - but apparently the first Kamiqs did have twin horns before the accountants started cutting costs.
  25. I've got the same issue and need to replace mine. Can I ask - are you getting Brembo replacements just on trust that they will be better than the crap Skoda fits, or as a result of some specific research/recommendation that you have come across?
