My mapped 245 with pedal box is no match for a Golf R.

They can put that power down so much better than front wheel drive.

I'm incredibly happy with my car, but let's be realistic.

From a standing start, yes. Once you're going it's a different story. My mapped 220 can (just) outpace Rs once we're on the go. 4x4 system steals a lot of their power.

Indeed I decided to spend £3,000 extracting an extra 94bhp and 147nm of torque so Golf R's don't blow me away, much to their annoyance.:)

Yup, and you end up with a more unique car too. In my 15 minute drive to work I see 4 Golf Rs every day, 3 are the same colour.

My 245 is a Golf GTi PP (Performance Pack, bigger brakes, wider rear track and faster steering) with a 590 litre boot (Golf 380 litre) but importantly £8,000 cheaper than the Golf. Who cares that it has a Skoda badge on the bonnet, boot and steering wheel, I don't.:)

And imagine the power you could get out it for that £8k of difference...

Mine does this ( they all do...??).

After my initial concern I have come to enjoy it, putting down a smokescreen behind me, it always reminds me of the early James Bond films...!

Agreed, its particularly pleasing when someone is sitting as close as they can behind you. Stamp the foot down, puff of smoke and you're gone. Magical.

Not quite sure if it’s the handbrake cable. it’s right under where the rear right passenger would sit. Here’s another look from further back.

Its 100% the handbrake cable, nothing else uses a hanger like that one. Itll run from the lever to the wheel.

same as Sasha on eagle F1s, ive switched to bigger Michelin PS4 235 and there is rubbing over bigger bumps. The side wall is considerably taller.

Do you also use spacers? I need to reduce my rear arch gap, it genuinely infuriates me.

I get no EML or fault code. Happens about 5-10 minutes into my drive first thing in the morning, not all the time. Sometimes it continues, sometimes it stops.

Been run on Tesco momentum since I bought it Feb '18.

New plugs, coils and injectors. Hasnt stopped it. Temp sensor readings are perfect when it's doing it.

I'm at a loss with it, I'd assume a plug not set right would be more common? I can go a week or so never getting it then it just starts up again. Theres obviously something that's linking the times it happens but I've not found it yet.

Hi, Interesting. What's your BHP approx?

I think with age I'm getting more cautious. Not convinced I'd like to do 160mph on an empty motorway without checking my tyres and the road first. The prospect of a blow out at that speed doesn't bear thinking about.

Its apparently 290 at the wheels, but that's just the dyno run I got when it was mapped and never verified anywhere, so it's likely lower.

its kind of knocking sound, coming from engine side when pressing on Accelerator. nothing wrong with air filter. it was changed 3months ago and still I did open it up and gave a good clean to that compartment.

I'd be getting it straight back to whoever serviced it as quickly as you could if the engine itself is knocking after an oil service.

Thing is most modern cars feel numb, that's electric power steering, all the driver aids and turbo engines with a linear power delivery for you.

This is the issue, I think.

I've driven a 16 plate RS4, its obviously quick but you're sitting in the drivers seat, feeling no bumps on the road, and barely even hearing it, it comes as a shock you're travelling over 100.

Drove some form of TVR years ago, which probably doesnt even have a third of the power, but it felt like it was trying to kill you every time you dared it to speed up.

I know which one I'd be more excited about driving a second time. I'd obviously rather own the RS4 though 😂

The Golf might be missing some of the standard equipment from the Leon though.

Yeah I think the likes of Cruise control were extras on them, so would have to find the right spec'd one now. I'll be honest, I'm down the rabbit hole and now more interested in how much extra power I can get out it than what matters for the dog 😂

The Golf interior counters with better quality surfaces and a premium feel compared to the basic feeling cheap Leon plastics. Even my Skoda interior is way better than a Leon's.;)

Yup. Spent most of today looking through forums/reviews and this is the overwhelming opinion. Leon apparently drives and sounds better, but the inside is so dull and cheap it puts people off. I'm thinking for an extra £1k, I'd be better getting a 4WD with nicer interior, as I couldn't afford a Cupra 300.

Cupra 300 4drive estate would be a good swap imo. Probably a similar amount of power to a remapped 220, similar boot capacity, but most importantly the ability to put the power down effortlessly in virtually any conditions.

Been tempted myself on the above Cupra model to replace my 63 plate 220 hatch.

A friend has a Leon FR estate and when we went to shift s wheelbarrow from my boot to his, we didn't seem to have enough space in his.

I swear the boot is smaller, or maybe it's just that on the hatch you can drop it in and close the lid, while the estate Leon you slide it in more.   I don't know, I just looked at the two and was glad I got what I got.

Ultimately, I don't see it as a big advantage, if any at all.  The only plus I can see is you can pull and retract the cover on an estate but you'll have to remove the whole parcel shelf on the hatch.

Saying that, I Just looked up those cupras, they do look nice.  But, not £20k extra nice.

I'd be going used obviously, and don't mind about the mileage that much. Can find second hand Cupra 290s for around £14k, which isn't a huge outlay if I sell my current car.

I've noticed Golf R estates are about £1k dearer though, which is tempting.

I have a 64 plate Octavia that has currently done 80700 miles the majority of which are Motorway commuting.

I had the MOT done earlier this week at Halfords and was chatting generally with the mechanic about the Timing Belt and when

    it should be changed etc:

He was saying that they recommend to change the Coolant Pump at the same time?

    So my questions are this

    1) what is the recommended mileage or age of car to change the T/B

    2) is the Coolant Pump change required

    3) Is £635 complete a lot for a job like that.

    Any help appreciated

Water pump change is only required to be changed if its fault, technically, but it's common practice to change it at the same time as the belt.

Reason being you have to remove the belt to fit it anyway, and if it fails, it can mean cheerio to the engine.

You'll definitely get it done cheaper than that.

Shame you are considering changing your car (which you clearly like a lot) for a small dog. Having heard what the Cupra ST owner said about the height and size of their boot I would keep the hatch and try and work with it and no real financial cost to you even if you have to buy a different sized dog crate that fits better in the hatch. Let's face it 590 litres should be plenty of space unless you have a St. Bernard.

I've been considering a DSG car for a while aswell, and my car has no LSD so struggles with the power in some situations.

Combining those two with my thought the boot of a Cupra would be taller sort of all added in my head to a good change. Had no idea the Octavia boot would be bigger so I'm now not sure 😂
