  1. Lidl do 5 litre containers that claim to be safe for fan jets and can be diluted quite a bit while retaining good anti-freeze properties.
  2. Think about it really, two bulbs made to the same highly controlled standards have been turned on for identical periods. Had the same happen with energy saving bulbs in my lounge with a 3 way light fitting, all 3 bulbs went within a few weeks of each other
  3. if you search youtube plenty of videos of people with them installed randomly beeping them to scare people. Funny as it is that's not the sort of thing I'm aiming for, in fact I rarely use the horn.
  4. I suspect the heat gun is just melting it, and when it re-solidifies it looks new. A similar thing happens if you use, I think, Xylene thinners. Probably easier to use a heat gun though.
  5. Finally bothered to wire in my second air horn with a relay. Messed about ages ago trying to find a way to mount it, mounted it and left it there. Had to decide between removing and wiring it. That means I have a Stebel Nautilus on the offside, and a Stebel Nautilus Compact nearside (stock horn location). Not yet tested them all in unison but gave the one I was installing a quick blast - made me jump and rang in my ears . Tried to find if this would be illegal but can't find any mention of a maximum horn volume, and I understand two horns of the same volume means 3db louder - and it seems you can buy single horns of that volume, 118db at 2 metres, anyway.
  6. Likely to be a wiring/connection issue somewhere then
  7. Been trying to read around. Some previous threads... http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/92220-emergency-braking-indicators/ http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/216728-hazard-lights-under-hard-braking-enabled/ So something can be enabled in VAGCOM/VCDS but unclear if it does anything on some Fabias. Perhaps it requires certain features in the controllers such as ABS/Central electrics that were added later.
  8. Do the cigarette lighter and other things light up as expected? One possibility is the little wheel in the light switch intended to adjust the illumination level is faulty.
  9. I would suspect at the point the door is opening, the wire controlling the locking inside the passenger door is being earthed somewhere. Possible inside the door itself. Have the locks ever locked going over a speed bump for example?
  10. Although with a little thought and use of a relay it's easy enough to get them to turn off when the main beams are on if you so desire.
  11. Polytechnics are more about academic elitism, and I would be against such an idea. Many people would suggest education at an ex poly is poorer quality than the traditional Unis. Having done an undergraduate course at an ex poly (I got BBC at A level and was applying for a popular course) and a masters at a traditional Uni, I got the impression the standards were not that different - based on other students who studied an undergraduate course at the same uni. A fellow student who had done their undergraduate course at the Open university, however, struggled and dropped out (not sure if that's indicative of the quality of their courses or just the course that individual happened to take). It's quite obvious the better Universities can be more selective, get better students, and attract better academic staff. That type of elitism and the Oxbridge/Ivy league halo effect is elitist enough, without imposing elitism by making standards different.
  12. No central locking on basic models (classic, silverline, blackline) as standard. Interior light - also worth cleaning switch contacts. Only likely to help if pushing switch back and forth gets some kind of flicker though. Also check when running it gets up to temp in reasonable time. Thermostat failures are common but easy to sort diy. A shaky idle is a common concern for new owners but this is normal.
  13. Is that grey stuff the complex self-levelling mechanism that is required by law?
  14. May be a case for harassment complaint then?
  15. Yep I guess as you've paid and agreed a contract you have an arrangement with them. TPS is for cold calling where there's no prior contact. You'll find if you put your number in all the comparison sites you'll get lots of calls. I generally put in 0906 696969 and if I want to buy go direct to the insurer taking advantage of any cashback offers - so that the comparison site does not make money and cannot give your phone number to various companies. Until they stop giving phone numbers on I won't let them make any money out of me.
  16. Does that not say more about the MD and QC managers than it does those they employed?! To me it suggests they felt they wanted everyone else to be "beneath them" in more ways than one - particularly as you knew about their degrees. I think just by turning up and submitting some work no matter the quality, it's easy enough to get a third in most non-technical subjects. In fact when I did my degree it was a case of if your work failed to get the minimum required for a third, you had a second chance - but only for a maximum mark that would get you a third. Most graduate schemes do not accept those who achieved a third. ISTR Carol Vorderman got a third though, and she's done quite well for herself and most people would consider her to be intelligent.
  17. 1. should be a case of pull lever inside car, then go to rear of car and pull tailgate upwards - at some point the gas struts will slowly lift the tailgate upwards. 2. A classic trim or model based on classic trim such as Silverline or Blackline would not have central locking as standard. As for the alarm I know little about them - unusual there's mention of immobiliser being involved as this is integrated into the dash panel. I doubt Skoda would fit an aftermarket immobiliser in addition to the standard one. To be fair, if you want an alarm you're probably best getting another model installed, like a Viper 1002. 3. An unusual idle, with the car shaking, is normal for the 1.4 mpi 8v. Word on here is that the idle is kept low to meet emissions legislation which means it is near stalling. The metallic rattle is likely to be the timing chain wearing loose. This occurs generally on highish miles. Noise itself isn't an issue but it is likely to get louder over time, and may affect running at some future point. 4. It is unfortunately normal for 1.4mpi thermostats to fail. They break internally. You'll probably need to replace the whole thermostat housing. To check, when engine is stone cold, remove temp sender and stick finger in - if you can move the thermostat there's the problem.
  18. Having studied Psychology I would say it is a proper subject. It does have some real-world utility, and is not all wishy washy. Here's just one example http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/14651858.CD005318.pub2/abstract;jsessionid=B54F7E1303F72E00BCF7E3A79DFFF8DE.d02t04 It is very oversubscribed though and I wish I had studied something more likely to lead to a job such as software engineering - but I guess even in that sector there's no guarantees. The Civil service graduate schemes will accept Psychology graduates into jobs such as Social research and Statistician. I was one of three on the course to get a first, out of around 80. If I was to criticise a subject it would be stuff like Media studies, or mickey mouse courses like David Beckham studies. To me the 9k thing is more than fair given you only pay back once you earn £21k p.a. or more. The thing that worries me is with figures as they are at present, hardly anyone will pay anything back so who's going to be making up the shortfall?! Those on about slackers - sad fact is things as they are the slackers pay nothing anyway, while those who do well and get a well paid job do pay.
  19. Oh dear. Skoda designed engines are so bad they used the newest Skoda designed 1.2l 3 cylinder petrol in the VW Polo. Also story goes before VW bought Skoda, VW put a Skoda engine and a VW engine on a test rig and ran them at extreme conditions. The Skoda engine survived, the VW didn't. Skoda also have a long history of numerous class wins in rallying prior to being bought by VW. The VW brand has a far better reputation than it deserves.
  20. Quick search on ebay... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Winter-Cover-Grill-Skoda-Fabia-12-99-04-07-/280765495271?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item415eed77e7
  21. You can use a piece of software called Keepass that will generate, and store, long passwords. I don't have the slightest clue what my paypal or bank password is, but I do know the password to access the password.
  22. The type of lighting very much affects colour perception too. Often in bright daylight it's easier to see colours are different. It varies with different types of indoor lighting too. I'm generally one of those concerned by such issues as things being slightly different. Might be worth trying an M&S factory outlet store if there's one near you. They generally have quite a wide selection, including their more expensive ranges. Reminds me of someone.... http://www.quantumleap-alsplace.com/mediapages/wardrobe-of-al.htm
  23. If I remember correctly these fit http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SAK-3103-Seat-Altea-165mm-Speaker-Adaptor-Kit-/160388965976?pt=UK_In_Car_Technology&hash=item2557ed6658 MDF rings help improve quality of the sound though too. Here's MDF rings I think would probably be ok http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Pair-6-5-18mm-MDF-Speaker-Spacer-Rings-Surround-CD-/160619381880?pt=UK_In_Car_Technology&hash=item2565a94478 you probably need at least a pair for one door though. Also come across these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Round-Speaker-Ring-MDF-/330569985161?pt=UK_ConElec_SpeakersPASystems_RL&var=&hash=item7dbcb1ca7b which seem fairly priced.
