  1. It’s when you get to the Golf R that you see some differences to the RS 245 mainly in the user interface. I test drove the R and it felt the same to drive (on normal public road conditions) but the GUI in the instrument cluster was fully digitised and quite impressive. Albeit not my cup of tea, I can see where it can attract a crowd. The infotainment system is also responsive to hand gestures flashed in front of it. It’s these little unique tech aspects that can really raise the premium on cars. As for the “value” brand label, I’m not so sure. Some products are great, well built and practical yet cheap, like my Kleenmaid vacuum cleaner. A fraction of the cost of the heavy duty commercial cleaners and it is solidly built giving us 15 years of flawless operation. Some products are expensive for their name but fail to pass the test of time or practicality. Where Škoda lies in such categorisation I’m not the best judge, but so far it has been enjoyable to drive a car for the first time in my life since learning to drive.
  2. I too looked at a Golf GTI and R Grid and the test drive was quite nice. For a non-rev head, I personally couldn’t see or feel a significant difference in the drive between these and a Škoda Octavia RS. In Australia the Golf is over $10,000 more than the equivalent sized and specced Octavia, and by doing a little research I managed to find a new pre-FL 2016 MY17 Octavia RS wagon for much cheaper than the FL 2017 MY18 versions in the local showroom.
  3. In Australia we have 91 RON (regular unleaded), 95 RON (premium unleaded) and 98 RON (high octane unleaded or super premium unleaded or whatever marketing name they want to give it). So there would be no long term adverse effects or efficiency disadvantage to fuelling up with 95 RON?
  4. That’s great advice. It’s certainly not a dealbreaker for me but knowing the dynamic lines required extra parts to work rather than a software upgrade or ticking a feature on the infotainment screen I’m happy to just be content with what I have. Thank you.
  5. Okay. So some cars clearly have the feature and others don’t. Why would this be the case? Is there any advantage to static lines or disadvantage to dynamic lines that would make them release cars with one or the other?
  6. Hmm. One would expect that my version should have dynamic lines also, unless there are other MY17 RS owners who don’t have them?
  7. Okay. Happy to accept this although I’d love to have the dynamic lines without having to upgrade to park assist. I’ll be doing the parking, not my wife.
  8. Relatively new here, and relatively new to Škoda so please direct me to any resources that explain this. The manual discusses Park Pilot (which I have) and Park Assist (which I do not) but the reversing camera guide lines in this process was not elaborated on. I understand some cars have dynamic lines (follow the steering wheel to show how the car will travel in the direction being steered) and some have static lines (do not move with steering) but I would have thought that with a factory fitted reverse camera there would be this dynamic line feature to assist with rear parking. My model does not have this (the lines are static). Is there a way to have them dynamic to follow the steering wheel? Thanks in advance for any information on this.
  9. Another Aussie here who shares the sentiment that the Octavia has a fair place in the smaller car market despite its shortcomings. The Superb really is a superb car and there is so much space it suits a family of 6 footers more so than a group of 5 footers who would find themselves floating in it. I’m interested to find out if anyone knows whether the higher spec RS models offer the independent suspension and driving qualities comparable to the Superb. I also have the standard entertainment system in my late 2016 RS (Columbus and non-Canton speakers) and haven’t got anything to compare it to in terms of sound quality and functionality. Anyone able to comment between the standard 110TSI and the RS counterparts?
  10. Not too any Aussies here but I'll chip in with my new purchase.
  11. Welcome and hope you go well with the RS.
  12. Good decision with the Superb. It is quite impressive and sleek although the Kodiaq has more height to support taller luggage. I know what you mean about the manual - you have to have your transliteration filter on to interpret some of the points in it. Congrats and enjoy the car.
  13. Welcome Chris and hope you enjoy the drives in this fine RS.
  14. Alas, no PCs at home. Just macs, and I haven't ever had the need for a PC emulation software, so I was hoping for a solution without VCDS. As I mentioned, it's no biggie - certainly not worth me looking for a loan PC and buy a cable for me to fiddle around with (and potentially muck things up, voiding my warranty), so I'll just let this one go and use Individual mode if I'm looking for the performance without the grunting noise. Thanks for your advice anyway.
  15. So if the country I live in is not listed among those that the website offers (http://skoda-connect.com/), does it matter if I select another country (such as the UK) and will it still work then for me in Australia? That is correct. I assume then there is the need for an app to communicate with the car's computer data, and this is the Connect app mentioned before? I do have the MyŠkoda and OneApp apps, though I can't seem to get them to communicate with the car after registering a name and password. Is there something else to these apps that I'm missing? This seems superfluous to what the car seemingly should be doing already (i.e. it already has sat nav and uses GPS to record routes, distance and times travelled). I thought there would be a simple solution to obtain this data that I could just tap into for accounting purposes. Oh, and merry Christmas everyone.
  16. Hi Skoda community. I understand there are online or mobile device applications that have the capability to communicate with the latest Columbus infotainment system but what is important to me is the automatic recording of trip distances/locations for means of a log book for tax purposes. I do not believe the model I have has any of the SmartGate features but it can do CarPlay via USB. I gather the car cannot do CarPlay wirelessly (please correct me if I'm wrong). My main question is how can I use any of the available apps (MyŠkoda or OneApp) to communicate with the car's trip details and record them online for me to provide to the taxation accountant at the end of the financial year? Thanks for all the advice.
  17. Okay. Thanks ahenners. So any use of the brake assumes full response to the driving situation then. That's fine. Not an issue.
  18. Thanks juan and Johnny. I was aware of the VCDS (but never used it) and was looking at a simple 'non-surgical' fix but it seems to be customised not to be tampered with. I picked up the Octavia yesterday and it drives quietly in Eco/Normal mode when not in full throttle, so it is not a big deal for me. Just keen on performance without much cabin noise being generated. I'll test run the Individual mode with all sports except noise generator, but I won't be pushing it as I appreciate new cars need a wearing in period (about 5,000kms is about right?)
  19. Resurrecting this thread as it is pertinent to the question I have on front driver assist without ACC (in city situations). I've only just bought an Octavia and on the drive home from the dealer there was the typical situation of a driver in front of me sharply braking to turn left and I saw it happening, but the brake assist got to the brakes prior to when I would have, with the usual thudding of the system. Question I have is just as ACC has a distance tolerance adjustment, does the front driver's assist emergency braking have a similar adjustment? I'm not counting on it but would be good to know (and adjust).
  20. Thanks Andacami and JED. The car being bought new will need some wearing in (as advised by the manual), and I'm yet to get used to the front driving assist (it's a little too generous for my liking). I might pose a question on that in the forum proper but for now thanks again and look forward to the experiences here.
  21. Thanks, and to someone new to VCDS is this doable with the car I will have? Turning it down to 20% is still acceptable. How now to achieve this without internal surgery?
  22. Hi to all on this informative forum. I'm Ash from Queensland, Australia currently holidaying at the Gold Coast. I've been eyeing an Octavia for a few weeks now as I started to 'outgrow' my 2006 Nissan Tiida. Problem was I found very few small car varieties that could give me the rear passenger leg room as well as the boot space needed for what I work with. Mazda 6 was the closest contender, but I was looking for a more fuel economical variety, without losing too much performance. Passing by a Brisbane Škoda dealer on the way to the God Coast was fruitful in finding a run-out MY 17 model Octavia RS without the bells and whistles of the higher end RS models, and I was content with that. I applaud Škoda for forging their way into the middle-sized/small family car scene with such great options. I even took a look at the Superb and was impressed by its versatility. But I prefer the smaller more nimble cars, and the Octavia RS looks to be a reasonable performer in a small (yet roomy) package. Thanks for having me on board.
  23. New here with a new purchase MY17 Octavia RS with a question on customisation of the sound generator. Picking it up tomorrow, so I don't have it yet. Is the sound adjustable through the Columbus infotainment unit or does it have to be manually adjusted as previously described? Just wondering whether I have to get the dealer to make the adjustment before I pick it up.
