  1. Leave them on. The bulbs cost about £1, and are the easiest to replace on the car - no tools, and about 3 minutes. Mind you, they do tend to go at about 9 monthly / 20,000 mile intervals (and never both at the same time) so I got fed up and replaced then with LEDs.
  2. HOW MUCH??????????? I know it is now nearly 2 years ago, but in May 2015 my front O/S headlight was smashed by a lump of clay about the size of a football which came from underneath a lorry approaching from the other direction. I had it replaced by my local indie and costs were: O/S/F headlight unit £112.12 Labour £37.50 VAT £29.92 (bl**dy Govt. gets you every time) Total £179.54. I can't believe that a replacement headlight has increased in price by almost 300% in 2 years. Even Brexit can't account for that much. What is it made from - solidified Unicorn tears silvered with platinum?
  3. 250 mins Unlimited texts 1 Gb data £0 (Free from talktalk with phone / BB) I don't need it so gave it ot MiL with explicit instructions on use.
  4. Nobody is defending the company. There is no credible evidence that removing and overwriting the "cheat" software has any significant effect on either the power output or the fuel consumption of the affected vehicles. Similarly there does not atm appear to be any effect on the second hand market prices for the vehicle. The law in this country requires claimants to show that they have suffered some pecuniary loss in order to be compensated. The only people who appear to have been affected are those 40-odd thousand (pick whatever number you like, it's equally and randomly pulled out of the air) who may have had their health significantly effected to the theoretical point of earlier death by the NOx emissions. So, if you are so concerned that VAG should be brought to task for their actions, surely it is these people who should receive compensation, not the vehicle owners who, until the story broke in the US and the ambulance chasing lawyers here saw the chance to make a few quid, didn't give a toss about what was coming out of their tailpipes as long as it didn't change their VED.
  5. Without pictures it didn't happen :dull:
  6. Because rather like the twice annual letter change the intention was, at the request of the Motor Industry, to deliberately move it away from the Xmas / New Year holiday period, which over the years had proven a nightmare. March and September were chosen to spread the load over the year.
  7. One off A34 at A415 / Abingdon junction. Another on A5 at A5 / A38 / M6 Toll junction south of Lichfield. Both regularly active, I was pulled over at the Abigdon one for a spot check for red diesel 2 years ago.
  8. Sorry, I was referring to carpet mats, not rubber ones.
  9. No chance. Earlier this year I spent a couple of weeks trying to get just a Drivers front mat - no joy from anywhere, whether Dealers, e-bay or anywhere. I even rang one supplier, who pointed out they are all CNC made in sets of 4 and were not prepared to do just one. There must be thousands of almost brand new passenger mats rotting away in landfill.
  10. No it isn't, that's my point. Time, age, mileage etc have nothing to do with it, it is down to frequency of usage which unfortunately can't be established. Also it isn't just the copper core that breaks from work hardening. The PVC insulation also breaks up leading to short circuits which produce the strange lighting effects and error messages that are frequently the first indication of a problem.
  11. This might sound stupid, but check that none of the buttons on the remote is stuck down. MIL had a new TV in June and after about 6 weeks it started this. As it was new we took it (and her) into Curry's all geared up for an argument. The guy behind the counter had a look and showed us the stuck button. Red faces all round, all of my geek cred has disappeared.
  12. Snap. See http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/411431-car-mats/ Despite suggestions about going back to the manufacturers, they weren't interested - all or nothing.
  13. The problems are not simply related to the snapping of the wires in the boot / saloon section. At about 100,000 miles I had this occur, followed shortly afterwards by one of the locking mechanisms failing. At that time for the proceeding 2 years / 55,000 miles the was (and still is) used for small parcel delivery & collection work, and as a result the boot and/or tailgate mechanism was being operated 40 - 60 times per day. I suspect that this level of usage is way beyond what would be expected of a car in "normal" use. Since the repairs I have been far more careful about "planning" removing parcels from the boot. To repair the wiring (VAG make a replacement part-harness which can be spliced in, my mechanic pointed out that individually extending and soldering in 10 or 12 separate wires would be far more expensive in labour time) cost £214. To replace the rear operating motor was £130 (I don't do crawling about in boots, I'm too old for that sh!t ) My experience suggests that the wear and failure rate relates to amount of usage of the boot, not the age of the car. In a car used in domestic usage situation the boot is not normally operated more than once or twice a day and is likely to last the life of the car. Unfortunately when buying second hand the amount of usage would be impossible to check. If you don't intend to use the car commercially, go for it, but factor in the possible costs. It's not a deal breaker for an otherwise excellent car.
  14. SORRY - an extra full stop crept in there somehow. It should be [email protected] with no full stop or space etc. between customer & service
  15. It varies with different engines and the date of their manufacture. For the engine in question the cam BELT replacement period is 5 years or 140,000 miles, whichever comes first. If you want the exact, correct info. e-mail [email protected] with your VIN and they will reply with the correct details.
  16. I'm not really worried that much about the cost. Driving about 30,000 miles p.a. I do like the cabin to be clean and comfortable, and I'm quite happy to pay the £40 - £50 or so that a set of mats costs. I'm reasonably certain that the mats are Laser cut and edges whipped on CNC machinery so producing 1 instead of 4 should present few problems. It's just the waste that really p****s me off. Oh well, I'm off to order a further waste of the Earths increasingly scarce resources.
  17. Does anyone know of anywhere that I can get a replacement DRIVERS side mat ONLY. After 2 1/2 years and 75,000 miles the drivers side mat is wearing through, but the other 3 are literally as good as new. I bought them from carmats4u, cost £40 including P&P and i have been satisfied with them BUT they only sell full sets of 4. I really hate wasting 3 mats which are immaculate. Anybody any suggestions?
  18. No. It wont be. But hey, don't let the facts get in the way of spouting rubbish.
  19. Whilst I fully understand cynicism towards VAG regarding the apparent simplicity with which they are claiming to have solved the problem with a software amendment, I don't understand why the technical provision of this change is regarded with such disbelief. After all, in just about every single one of the model forums on this site are posts / recommendation / reports etc. about how a Stage 1 remap will produce increased power with improved mpg. I (and I suspect almost no-one else ) don't actually understand precisely how the ECU software works and how a remap alters the engine parameters but am prepared to accept that it can and does, and therefore theoretically it should be possible to remap the offending engines without either reducing the power or increasing the mpg.
