  1. Cheers Evil πŸ€™ Ah yeah, good point, forgot about those bluetooth ones, i've had a quick look and they seem cheap enough. On another note however, approaching the car from a distance the other day and noticed the below, held to the car with cable ties.. (pics below) Q1. What is this for? Q2. Im gonna assume this isn't meant to be in this location, so where is it supposed to go? because that's waiting to be damaged by something Thanks in advance (p.s, still not got the topmounts in lol)
  2. So here it goes, installing a chinesium double din touch screen head unit, by someone with no auto electronics experience.... atall. Welcome to Jackass. πŸ˜‚ So on saturday i fitted the head unit which turned out to be alot more of a nightmare than it was supposed to be. pic of said head unit For starters, the headunit came with no harness adapter to join it up to the skoda loom, so a trip to halfords saw me buying a connect2 harness. Happy days. went to get the headunit in, went to connect up the harness adapter, turns out that the headunit hasnt got ISO connections on the back.... great. Now i've never done one single bit of auto electronics and i didnt know anyone who had so the only alternative was to take a punt, chop up this harness and wire it up one by one, i had no idea what i was doing, the below is what i was having to work my way around. cut off the plug on the head unit side to start with got left with the 2 separate plugs for the loom side Now, thinking wires are just wires i decided to go about just matching up each individual wire to their corresponding colour on either side of the adapter im making. First one done. Seemed to be easy enough apart from the strands of copper in my mouth, so i continued. i did this for all of the wires following, bit by bit finding out which did what, turns out grey, purple, green and white all relate to the speakers. tidied them up best i could given the lack of material and tools i had (please dont shoot me for the lack of heatshrink) i carried this on with the other side aswell with the power, ground, switch live etc etc. hey presto... it works! The above pic is the finished product, i will mention however the cage i got from connect2 was way way too small for the head unit, i ended up drilling out the rivets, re bending it with a pair of pliers and sticking it back in, thankfully its properly jammed in there and isnt going to be moving about any time soon and the same goes for the screen too, i'm yet to hook up the radio atenna, GPS antenna or wire up the USB ports but for now i've downloaded spotify and its doing me just nicely. There were a few wires i didnt need for one reason or another, such as the below But i think they might be for an amp and sub? if someone can let me know thatll be grand. Apart from it being a little bit slow (not in an annoying way, just compared to the mobile phones of today worth Β£500+) its perfectly fine and for the sake of just shy of Β£100, the quality of life has improved tenfold. would 100% advise this mod to bring your car into the modern era. I am going to look into splicing into the OBD port and downloading that Torque something app for live data readings, i think it'll be a nice touch to have aswell as getting a dongle fitted to one of the usb ports so i can have a consistent data connection. Still trying to find time to sort out my topmounts however lol. ***and breathe*** until next timeπŸ€™

  4. I second Evil on that, that wait time is taking the p*ss. Cant you just ask for a refund and get the kit or similar to what i linked? You'll save close to 50% of what you've spent and i imagine it'd come alot quicker lol
  5. Issues or not i'm sure you'll notice some sort of difference as to how the car runs, still baffles me lol On another note, i did a buy.... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/265172679428 & https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/160356836986 Cant wait to get this in, sick to death of listening to the radio, all they do is talk crap around irrelevant things. Somewhat of a redeeming factor to the day seeing as a Pidgeon carpet bombed the car..... πŸ˜‘
  6. Your car is literally my inspiration... already on the hunt for the carpet out of a mk4 haha, have messaged like 6 people on ebay who are breaking 5dr mk4 golfs πŸ˜‚ Out of curiosity, with the full black carpet, as well as the full black seats, what are your plans with the door inserts that are 'supposed' to be white also? is there an OEM replacement for them? Must say the 17" spiders do wonders to the look of the cars, i was heavily considering going for something aftermarket but after seeing yours with the spacers i'm more than half tempted to try source a set for myself... granted the cars on coilovers but have you noticed any differences with the ride comfort/ or speedo reading off due to the slightly larger wheels and tyres? Also, without sounding cheeky, around about how much did the custom 'zorst set you back? looks nice with the twin pipes.. Cheers!
  7. Aye.. if the boxsters already sitting in the garage, it surely doesnt need its brakes, no? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ
  8. Talking from personal experience from owning several 20vt mk2 golfs, a lot of people doing the conversions with 02j boxes, people put the vr6 clutch and g60 flywheel, never had a problem with this set up in any one of my 20vt mk2 and all of them were pushing the 300ft/lbs mark and i imagine itd be a damn sight cheaper than anything else?? They even do a kit on ebay.. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/372637899975?hash=item56c2f31cc7:g:LucAAOxyuPtQ-WEr
  9. Last week of September, absolutely crazy eh.. Anyway so despite the busy weekend i managed to get something done at least, i.e clean out the throttle body, turns out it really is a sub 30 min job. Nice and easy, undo jubo clip holding the hose onto the TB, think it was like an 8mm socket iirc and boom you've got one side of it.. Looking at it from this side i really didn't think it was too bad, cleaned it up using a cloth, some ear buds and a spray bottle of carb cleaner but apart from the coked up area around the actual throttle plate i thought it was surprisingly clean. Moved on to taking out the allen bolts, think they were 5mm, to reveal the other side and mother of god it was awful Look at the state of that, safe to say i figured this was part of if not all the reason to the jerky throttle response and hesitation. i did make sure not to unplug it as i don't have easy access to VCDS to re-calibrate it.. i know people say that just leave the key in position 1 or something to reset it but id rather not take the risk seeing as this cars my daily. Cleaned it all up, above is before, below is after Did it the best i could and i think i did a pretty good job considering the state of it before hand. Cleaned up both of the mating faces on the TB and Intake mani and sandwiched a fresh gasket between them to call it a job done All in all, easy job to do and just as abit of maintenance i'd highly advise doing it. The result? The car really does feel like it picks up better and generally just feels more alive, especially in the lower rev range the pick up seems stronger and when motoring around in low revs theres no judder, no hesitation and the overall driving experience is much much smoother. A must do job for anyone who hasn't done it, i did think it was a placebo effect and that it would wear off at the start but its been 2/3 days now and i'm still amazed at the result you can get for the sake of Β£10.00 (Carb cleaner from halfords and a gasket) Gasket i got was a Febi - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/174087885784 Cleaner i got was - https://www.halfords.com/motoring/engine-oils-and-fluids/fuel-and-oil-additives/carlube-carb-and-air-intake-cleaner-247638.html Cheers!
  10. Another avenue might be worth looking at, not got too much info on it but i could swear blind i read about someone fitting Porsche Boxster front brakes under standard 17 spiders??? Just food for thought lol
  11. I dont think this news has got to the West Midlands lol, yet to experience overly long queues at any of the local pettys by me. Thankfully however, 95% of people will be putting the cheapo stuff in anyway, no need to worry about the higher octane stuff being unavailable...
  12. So, Oil filters arrived, just waiting on the sump plug and washer now aswell as a new gasket for the throttle body clean this weekend. Pic of filter below for reference : Unfortunately the oil change is going to have to wait until next weekend now as this weekend seems to have filled itself up with busyness rather quickly. On another note, ticked over to 135,000 miles today, barely just run in eh! Comparing the car now to when i purchased it in Blackburn it seems to be driving way way smoother than what it did a week an half ago, whether that's down to only putting 98/99 octane fuel in it or it just being driven with a bit of agro i don't know, but it does feel a lot nicer. Hopefully over the next couple of weeks i'll be hoping to get my hands on one of them fancy touch screen double din things to put in place of the cassette player the one ive found comes with an aerial/gps thing so will come automatically with google maps (be nice) aswell as spotify, DAB radio, bluetooth, usb all the bells and whistles... Best part about it? its only Β£76.00!!! Them Chinese really know how to produce value for money lol. Link to the one i'm looking to get below https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/303094925953?hash=item4691dd8a81:g:fnkAAOSwxMVfJ9dh Going to have to take the rear passenger door card off aswell at some point in the coming days, when i bought the car it could open from the inside and out, the only issue was the window, but now the inside door handle does nothing, the window keeps sliding down and whenever i use the up/down button i can hear like a crunching noise underneath the motor?? I think the glass has been smashed before and the current window is bodged in there somehow with stuff holding it up, safe to say im sh**ing myself to see what lies beneath. Also picked up a can of Black Magic paint and clearcoat from Halfrauds, going to have a crack at reparing the rust on the bottom of drivers door aswell as painting the spoiler. Feels nice to get my teeth stuck into a car after a 5 year hiatus of being sensible haha, ohwell, will update when more updates arrive! Ciao.
  13. So after doing some digging and according to some chaps over on audizine the 18010 - Power Supply Terminal 30, Voltage too low code is apparently down to disconnecting and reconnecting the battery, something about the ecu detecting the loss of power and therefore throwing a code? Makes sense as i took the top hose off the DV last week for some chu chu noises for the lols, it threw a CEL and i disconnected and reconnected the battery. Just for anyone in future who gets the same code come up on a scan.
  14. Bump, would like advise on this also.
  15. Yeah i've had a quick look they really don't cost alot so its almost not, not worth doing just as preventative maintenance.
  16. Well i suppose it does, me saying it dropped to like 87 is just me being pedantic lol. It warms up and sits directly up put it that way... I take it i can assume that the thermostat and CTS is ok then?
  17. Morning Evil... Yeah it does sit at 90 once up to temp, on the drive home from Blackburn sitting at 60mph (2/2.5hrs) it did go down to say, 87? But for the 99% of the time ive owned it, yeah, once up to temp it sits top dead centre at 90. Ahhhhhhhh, the more you know, eh? Cheers Ken.
  18. Mid week mini update... But before that, I keep seeing people call them combis, is that the actual name for them? I.e Tourings for BMW, Avant for Audi yada yada?? But thanks for the welcome man! you sound alot further a head on your endeavors than i am currently so i'll have a gander through your thread and pick up on some tricks and tips lol Onto the update.. Had the car scanned last night, after seeing the codes i was quite surprised and full of relief considering it was probably the first time in 17 years the car had been plugged in (previous owner was a member of the tree society so didn't really give a f**k about the car clearly) Going through them one by one 17704 - pretty self explanatory, would rather not do the thermostat so going to replace the CTS first to see 16716 - erm? help? 18010 - erm? help? 16885 - This one confused me as the speedo works perfectly fine... Any advise on this is welcome 17608 - Kinda assumed some Nxxx related valve codes would come up, plan on bypassing this anyway so nice easy fix 16795 - Same as above, not needed and advised to remove it prior to having the car mapped Nice to know the car isnt as fubar'd as i thought... Am i right in thinking however that my suspicions of a boost leak would have been highlighted here? Will have another update on/following the weekend hopefully changing the oil and cleaning the TB so stay put. Cheers!
  19. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ the screen under your fuel and temp gauge, mines just black and shows me the fuel light and open door etc, how do i get the one you've got? πŸ˜‚
  20. If a remap to these makes it anywhere near as pokey as my 20vt Mk2 Golfs (had 2 with k03s' and one a k04) then i'll be happy, its the instant get up and go characteristic of the engine/small turbo set up, its lovely... does die out quite heavily up the top end mind but i suppose thats why alot of people who do the 20vt swaps into mk2's put a diesel 5 speed in it, longer ratios and makes it much much nicer to live with, thankfully its not a mod i have to look at now owning an octi πŸ˜‚
  21. Loving all these warm welcomes lol, thanks man! I am slowly starting to fall in love with this like properly, just needs more oomph and to stop f**king creaking !!! lol So, did abit on the weekend, when i say abit i mean not a fat lot atall haha. I will apologise in advance, i really do forget to take pictures on whats being done so you'll have to deal with just the one for the time being paired with a very wordy update post Conclusion? Replacing ARB bushes are an absolute nightmare without ratchet spanners... Best part about it, it didnt fix the creaking! Either way, after bruised knuckles, cut up fingers, and aching hips from sitting with my legs crossed for 2 hours i finally managed to get them in, even though the ones which came out didnt even look that bad. It didnt fix the creaking but amazingly the way the car drives is night and day, it handles so much nicer now (not sure if just a placebo effect) Didnt get round to doing the top mount bushings purely because i didnt have an impact gun to get the top nut off but after replacing the ARB's the steering wheel seems to sit straighter, still pointing to the right slightly don't get me wrong, and when ive got a passenger in, it points further to the right, so by process of deduction, with the creaking, knocking, steering wheel sitting off centre to the right and because im convinced the passenger topmount is properly fubar'd, it would make sense that all these issues are being caused by that, no? Next on the list of purchases, new front wishbones because why not, set of coilovers because it needs new suspension so might aswell upgrade at the same time, have a Bosch oil filter on the way aswell as picking up this ... (i hope its decent) So yeah, all in all, good enough Saturday, not the most productive but had to get it all tied off before an hours drive to Northampton where according to the trip i managed to average 36 mpg? H O W. Hopefully will be some more updates in the coming days/weeks Cheers!
  22. Goodies update.. After reading through a few threads and being recommended by Evil i went ahead an bought some new Meyle ARB bushes aswell as new top mounts / bearings, hopefully going to get these fitted over the weekend and hopefully say auf weidersehen to the creaking at the front. Found out a pal of mine also whos heavily into his vag cars has some crazy version of VAG-COM with all the bells and whistles, and kudos to him hes offered to use on the Octi to see if theres any stored codes and fingers crossed will be able to tell me if infact there is a boost leak or not.. however one thing ive noticed and have been noticing is when driving, lower in the rev range the car seems to run a little bit lumpy, im suspecting coilpacks on the way out..? Can anyone clarify? Also, theres a god awful squealing and rattle when pulling off in a high gear or doing early changes ... aux belt? Either way, bit by bit im still planning to get the car back to as best near stock condition as possible before i send it in for a map, dont really want to leave any stone unturned. Thanks for the welcome DoDaniel! Yeah i think im going to do that, especially with the wishbones and stuff, i really do NOT fancy going through the trauma of trying to remove the bushes with a hacksaw and blowtorch lol. I wouldnt be surprised if it were the shocks or something along those lines if im honest, i genuinely just thought the car was ridiculously soft from standard, the suspension doesnt look like its sagging in any way, its just the body roll when going round corners is enough to knock someone sick lol, ive planned now for a set of JOM coilovers for it, i know theyre cheap ebay jobs but i've used them countless times before and personally have never had an issue. I'll have a look at all the hoses over the weekend, there are alot of them lol, anywhere specific to put my attention to? Oh no, you're a Potterhead!? - More of a Hunger Games man myself.....
  23. Slightly bit off topic but also on topic at the same time... I've had 20vt's in the past, none have been standard (stage 1) and whenever you planted it, you got a proper shove in the rear, especially on my old 20vt mk2 with a k03s, however, ive just got my occy vrs, i love it, but i feel somewhat underwhelmed when i put my foot down? like, is that the power delivery is just THAT linear theres almost nothing to notice of the increase in speed bar the speedo? or do i have something wrong with mine ? lol I'm trying to work out whether theres a boost leak and im down on power or that these cars are just genuinely that linear with their power delivery and to get that shove i'll need to get it mapped..? Please help lol
  24. Oh right haha, i'll give that a miss then and as you said, good quality OEM replacements. I'll have gander tonight with my feet up across the forums and different threads, better than picking up a harry potter book surely lol
  25. Thanks Evil! Haha, don't get me wrong its going to cost a fair bit, but the majority of the small fixes i.e alignment, sorting the bushes etc, more so the quality of life stuff shouldn't cost tooooooo much, no? Would you advise just replacing with OEM bushes then instead of going poly? i want it stiffer but not horrible... i've never had polybushed anything on previous cars so have no experience in ride comfort, or should i say discomfort lol.
