MkIV Octavia VRS Audio upgrade - disappointing
I'm really not an expert on this, and dynamic speakers in all their theoretical simplicity are actually quite complicated... I know for sure that smaller gap provides higher magnetic flux, thus increasing speaker efficiency, but also it's dumping so control. It can be of course to some extent compensated by using a bigger, stronger magnet. In TS parameters air gap is directly impacting B, so magentic flux, which is part of Bl. Indirectly it impacts Qes. You can check those parameters in Wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thiele/Small_parameters

Fuel consumption?
Are you driving short or long distances? Unfortunately those new petrol engines have a catalytic converter pre-heating program, which means it "floods" engine with fuel at the beginning, trying to heat it up more quickly. I have 1.5 TSI. On short trips (like 3km) consumption can be even higher than 10l/100km. On the longer runs it start dropping to reach numbers close to advertised figures. It's also quite sensitive to external temperatures, which i guess are impacting that pre-heating program. Petrol engines were always sensitive to temps, but not like they are now. On the same route, with similar traffic but different expternal temps, it can vary from 9l in low temps to 6,5 in higher temps. Older TSI engines were better on short distances. I had 1.4 TSI 122BHP (EA211) and it was much better on short distances, but also in ilde (0.4l/h in 1.4 vs 0.7-0.8l/h in 1.5 in the same conditions like external temps, AC switched off etc.). But on longer distances (>10km) it's better than older engines. Once i was able to get 6.2l/100km when driving 300 highway at 140km/h all the time. In 1.4 TSI Leon i never got below 6.9 on the same road and same speed.

Infotainment System Restarting endlessly
Maps version consists of year and month of relese, so yes, 24.2 seems latest one, March maps are probably still due to be released. Is it really called MIB4 now in FL models, or is it 3.5? In the past FL models usually got .5 MIB's. I would assume it's MIB3.5 and MIB4 will go to new generation of the cars, but i might be wrong. Might be possible, but might also require a lot of fiddling. I remember people upgrading MIB1 to MIB2 in some cars, but it required a bit more changes than a simple swap.

Infotainment System Restarting endlessly
Well, wish that was the case Unfortunately it seems that we are getting same bugs, just a bit later. But it applies also for any fixes, which we are also getting later Seems Skoda is taking their time to apply their skins to "barebone" firmware...

Infotainment System Restarting endlessly
Seat/Cupra is now guinea pig for VAG SW doepartment. They always get new firmwares as first ones. Next is VW and Skoda is last one, with sometimes even few months of delay.

Sorry to hear. To be honest i have no more ideas. Really strange issue.

Infotainment System Restarting endlessly
I don't know when you had that notification, but if recently, it might still be downloading in the background. It's a big package (8GB or so) and builtin internet connection is very slow. I also haven't had such issue, using Android app in different versions since almost 2 years. I had to have re-authenticate several times for any reason, but after logging in car was always there, it was never forgotten by the app. It's actually cloud based service, so maybe there's something wrong with your account on Skoda/VAG servers? You could try setting up new account and adding car there, maybe that will help.

Infotainment System Restarting endlessly
Of course, i'm not saying there aren't This whole topic is very unclear, very bad job by VAG here...

Infotainment System Restarting endlessly
Actually it's true only to some extent. It seems, that infotaiment software comes as a package with firmware also for some other stuff, not only MIB unit. But this is not really clear or documented anywhere, so we only find out when we seem that something works better/differently after infotaimen SW been updated.

GATEWAY 5WA907530C How to update the firmware?
No, it will not. TPI is just information for service centers how to deal with some issues reported by users. Thing is, that not all service centers and not always are willing to check if there's TPI, so in many cases you can report issues that is covered, however they will still tell you there's nothing they can do... That's ball... you know what. If there is a faulty software, fixes should be applied to all cars, even if one doesn't see symptoms at the moment. Considering how complex are current cars, many users think that their symptoms are "features" or are related to something else (i.e. it's easy to blame your phone for issues with AA or CP, where in fact they are caused by infotaiment software). That being said, i also strongly recommend NOT TO UPDATE software on your own, especially not knowing what you are doing. You might cause yourself serious issues rather than improve things, especially with things like gateway. Just think that gateway is connecting all computers in the car together. If something goes wrong, you might need towing to nearest delarship so they can program everything from scratch (for a steep price) just to get your car moving again.

Infotainment System Restarting endlessly
Dealers just connect your car to ODIS and check for updates. If they don't see any, they tell you software is up-to-date FOR YOUR CAR. And in a way they are not wrong, as it's VAG to blame here, that updates are not "enabled" for every car... Of course dealers could be more helpful and give you some hint, but i'm guessing something is preventing them. It is annoying, i know. One way to force them is to report some issue, that is covered by TPI with firmware upgrade. I.e. "my Android Auto is restarting" or "system doesn't save home address in sat-nav". This way they can "add" car to TPI, and magically ODIS will show them updates, which it was not showing before. Again - this is how VAG made it work. If you ask me, this should be illegal. Since there are new software versions released, fixing some issues, by law it should be applied for all cars, even if users is not reporting one of the fixed issues. Otherwise faulty firware is still there, so product as such is also faulty. Wonder if our governments will do something about it one day...

Matrix Lights - Dazzling oncoming drivers
No, cars are not coming off un-calibrated. However in some cases calibration is wrong or missed, but it should be considered as any other manufacturing flaw, that can be fixed under warranty. But definately it's not so, that all cars are un-calibrated, it's probably a small percentage that has some issue. That's another story, but it's down to how distributors in different countries work. AFAIK VAG requires all dealerships to have proper equipment, but i have no idea why in some countries they tolerate ones, that don't have it... They don't, unless you remove either one of the headlights or windscreen. Otherwise they don't need re-calibration. Calibration is just about telling computers what is relative position of each LED segment against it's camera in the windscreen. Once this is done, it doesn't really change unless one of the system compenents is physically moved (changes position). Well, seems it's not for you, fortunately we have a choice for now I prefer matrix headlights now, that i have them. They are great. But i do observe if i'm not dazzling others. If i would see that, i would take car for calibration right away. If it's dirty system should refuse to work, same way as i.e. front assist, which also relies on the camera. Haven't checked however, as i keep my camera clean, and only times when i'm getting front assist warnings are during the day (caused by moisture in the morning), so cannot really check main beam than If it's raining, droplets will not cause issues. Camera will see light in the bigger area, so will disable more segments, so still no dazzling.

Matrix Lights - Dazzling oncoming drivers
No, system works well if lights are properly calibrated. There's been few examples here where car been taken to calibration and flashing stopped. So system is not flawed, it's just drivers don't know how it works and that it needs calibration if they are being flashed. That's it. If your car is not handling properly you take it for wheel allignment, and not say tarmac/tires/suspension if flawed, right? So same thing here - if one is being flashed, means system needs calibration. As easy as that...

What does 'tow bar preparation' actually include
That doesn't explain why in some versions there are no changes to cooling system, yet still cars without prep are missing towing info in CoC, and cannot legally tow. But it might be mix of those things. Anyway this IS the case with towing, so be aware and check when buying a car (new or used), as you might be surprised... I really don't understand why people are still afraid of small engines. Subaru Impreza, Mitsubishi Lancer or even Golf with 2.0 300bhps engine is good, because this engine is "big". 115bhp 1.0 Octavia is bad, cause it has small engine. First ones have 150bhp from 1 litre, second one 115bhp... It's only matter of materials used for manufacturing those engines and how percisely they are made. Those are making a difference when it comes to durability. And funnily enough there are plenty of those 1.0 engines used in company fleets, with huge mileage on the clock. So are they unreliable? No... When it comes to towing it's torque that makes a difference. This 1.0 has more torque than old, naturally aspirated 1.6 had. (Soft) Turbo makes a diffrence here. Not mention torque curve, wich makes 1.0 more pleasent for daily driving, as there is no need for revving it so much.

What does 'tow bar preparation' actually include
That is correct, it is separate... to some extent. As said - AFAIK most (if not all) cars without towbar prep have all towing related fields in CoC empty. It might differ from country to country, but in Poland at least it means, that you cannot legally fir a towbar in easy way. Probably "smart" way for manufacturers to sell you towbar prep. Thinking about towbar? You have to pay us for "prep", otherwise we will make your life harder... Prep and CoC are not legally related, but manufacturers (or at least VAG) made it related in their own way. Nothing prevents them from putting towing info to CoC for all cars, but they decided not to do it, easy as that.

What does 'tow bar preparation' actually include
Well, so it seems in UK you have same issue after all... Document i'm refering to is called Certificate of Conformity (in Poland we use different name, so needed to check). Each car has now individual CoC. For most cars without factory fitted towbar or prep al fields related to towing are empty. As said, it was not the case in the past. Before WLTP CoC was issued differently and usually all towing data was there for all cars, depending on their engine. Many people don't know that and don't bother to check, so they are surpised when trying to install towbar, if they haven't ordered towbar prep...

What does 'tow bar preparation' actually include
Well, UK is not in EU anymore, so... And in reality, at least in Poland i've seen number of such cars. It seems that each car has now own homologation certificate, and for ones without towbar or towbar prep all towing related fields are empty. Depending on the country it might mean, that to install towbard you need long and winding procedure to make it legal. In the past all cars had those fields filled in by default, so one could install towbar to almost all cars. I think manufacturers changed it when WLTP kicked in, as it requires separate certificates for individual cars, and not one certificate for a model as it was previously. I might be wrong here, as i have never studied those legal topics deeply enough, but at least this is my understanding. Anyway good for you, that you have no such problem I know that for many people in Poland it's a major pain.
-
What does 'tow bar preparation' actually include
Actually within EU i THINK all cars without towbar preparation cannot tow anything based on their homologation. It's possible to change that, but at least in Poland it requires a lot of hassle. But maybe i'm wrong and it's not all cars, maybe just some. Anyway that is the case for many, many users. Yes, but AFAIK it's the case for most Octavia's MK4.

What does 'tow bar preparation' actually include
Actually one important thing not mentioned here is bigger radiator and fan. Cars with tow bar or "tow bar preparation" have bigger radiator to avoid overheating of the engine when towing.

2024 facelift hopes and dreams
Short answer is no, we will not get new software. That's unfortunately common these days - want new software? Get a new car/tv/whatever.
-
2024 facelift hopes and dreams
I'm pretty sure, that bigger problem will be software. New display most probably has also different resolution, so you would need newer software. And new software cannot be installed on old MIBs... So IF it is possible, than 99% sure it's only in combo.

2024 facelift hopes and dreams
Most probably not without main infotaiment unit. It's a next generation MIB now (MIB 3.5 if i'm not mistaken). In the past there were some success stories on retrofitting newer MIB to some cars, but am not sure if it's possible with current generation of cars.
