You need to walk along the entire length of the wire to the sensor, maybe it got pinched/twisted/broken somewhere during the clutch repair...

The range readings are calculated by the on-board computer (quite approximately) and depend on: fuel quality, instantaneous consumption, average consumption, road conditions, driving style, and...you can go on.

After buying a car, it makes sense to have it serviced and have a full diagnostic done. This way you will be sure that everything is fine with the car. IMHO.
