  1. Nope. More fruitless calls to Valiant...who target the parts that have already been replaced...... there are mutterings coming from the boiler cupboard about plates being cold now..... This is going to run longer than Clunkclicks AEG Washer saga....
  2. This bit. Sold as seen, no warranty given or implied. five weeks later they start to complain? Sounds like buyers remorse. They were happy with the terms of the sale, the contract you had. Don't be involved anymore. You've more than covered your contractual obligations. I suppose they *could* attempt taking it further but would it really be worth it, from their point of view? Maybe they're just trying it on a bit. An MOT only certifies the car as being roadworthy on the day, not for weeks after...
  3. I was going to suggest a decent HP or Lenovo. Haven't seen dells in a while, though they used to be solid. I'd personally avoid toshiba's due to bitter experience with awful quality finish and suspect build quality. But, as with all consumer electronics, YMMV. I wouldn't entertain a Macbook unless you're willing to lock into a software ecosystem that is not totally interchangeable with the rest of the world - Pages can read MS Word, but not vice versa..... If you're mad enough, boot camping it is an option (guess who?), but then hikes the price more as you need to buy Windows, Office etc on top.
  4. They changed the circuit board on Monday, along with a couple of sensors, which had zero effect. actually, that's a lie. It did have an effect of rendering nearly half the radiators stone cold, and i've been chasing air round the system twice a day ever since attempting to bleed it out, with mixed results. Pointless really given how many time on each visit they run the water, drain the boiler, fit new parts, refill boiler.......and repeat... There was a 'eco thermostat' fitted (valiant vrt50) at installation, though ultimately seemed quite pointless at the house never reached the temp set with it and its only wired for on/off - nothing other than the usual two wires. The whole thing makes no sense. The boiler and hot water worked absolutely fine till last week, so certain claims about supply pressure etc earlier documented in this thread appear to be nothing more than BG attempting to deflect attention from their inability or unwillingness to meet the obligations of the contract we've entered into in good faith. Todays visit booked for 12-2. I arrived home at 11:15 to find an engineers van parked outside working at another house. Anyone like to place bets that it won't be that engineer that's scheduled for ours? Hahahah.
  5. Actually, it might.Back to barely warm water and boiler not indicating temp past 47 degrees on demand. Cue another call out and engineer visit today. Shortly followed by human sacrifice of one gas engineer on the burning wreckage of a 5 year old Vaillant Boiler.
  6. What OBD said. I had cause to take a similar approach when an Audi I'd bought spent 14 out of 20 days ownership with the supplying dealer for faults that really should have been picked up and could have been quickly resolved by any garage mechanic with an ounce of knowledge. Funny how hand delivering a letter to the dealership invoking the law and emphasising your rights to take the matter further concentrates the mind of the average dealership principal....It's cheap for you to lodge your claim, their lawyers charge them much more per hour and they can always re-sell the car some someone else still maintaining a degree of profit.
  7. Update Gas valve and heat exchanger replaced.....we have lovely hot water. For how long remains to be seen....
  8. That's the irony, isn't it? Under the terms of the Homeware agreement a new boiler is one of the options, but of course they'll use everything under the sun to get out of that, even if the cost of parts is mounting to that much and more.
  9. Blackpool, so classed as slightly to moderately hard. what I cant understand it's why its been fine since we moved in, then suddenly gave up the will to live without any warning.
  10. Rubber hoses check out ok....replaced a canoe filter and a pump on Vaillants say so... No change. Apparently it IS getting enough gas.....which directly contradicts what a previous engineer stated, though he did't write this on any o the paperwork left with me. Another call to Valiant who now say the primary heat exchanger is shot and needs replacing. On a boiler that was installed, brand new, in July 2011. Digging into the boilers history a bit more, I've found paperwork detailing a replacement pump and heat exchanger in mid 2012 as well by the previous occupants under a BG Homeware agreement. Shocking. It would appear we've got the Beer O'clock Friday afternoon boiler in terms of reliability and build quality. Once we've got some cash, a Worcester Bosch is going in and supply pipe upgrading to 22mm at the boiler end.
  11. As others have suggested, it could be coincidence, or could be a sensitivity that your mother might not have previously been aware of or recently acquired. My experience was I was fine with shellfish until the Winter of 2001 when I was on holiday in Hong Kong and pigged out of fresh prawns. I was terribly ill for the next 24 hours, and after that, every time I've eaten prawns, even just one, I get a rapid reaction. SWMBO is the same with pork.
  12. I'd much rather they were sure first too rather than this parts carousel.....cold showers are not fun at the best of times. Even less so when i'm taking the heat from SWMBO every day about it too (the engineer conveniently arrives after she's gone to work in the morning and leaves before she returns.....he's clearly psychic!
  13. This evening we will mostly be dining on some sort of bacon/gammon/pork steak affair - not sure really what it is, as it came unlabelled in a food aid pack from my mothers freezer (she thinks my being unemployed currently means we don't eat, despite evidence to the contrary). Looks like a slice of bacon, but paler, and much thicker. This will be served with fried eggs and possibly sweet potato fries. Hmmmm....Calorific!
  14. - Check those rubber hoses when he comes today though. Thats more likely to be your issue imo. Wouldn't those have shown up when he took the plate heat exchanger out? Though looking at the diagrams in that manual, it looks like he took out the hydroblock  I'm officially lost now.
  15. Transco were called out on Friday evening - 22mb standing and 21mbar when calling for demand for hot water AND with 4 burners on the hob going, so they said there was no issue with it. I've managed to get two of the rads open (though not the coldest ones, sods law) this morning and got a load of air out of one in our bedroom, so it would appear whatever he was doing yesterday, there's been air introduced into the system....I expect much shaking of heads later and proclamations of needing a (chargeable) power flush.....Not likely, given this need has arisen since BG have taken on replacing random parts..... But will definitely be getting the engineer to check those rubber hoses as mentioned - i did try to take the boiler cover off this morning to check them myself, but even after removing the retaining screw, the clips are stuck fast........
  16. I know an engineer should be qualified to work on the boiler but after six hours yesterday, cleaning out gas valve, plate heat exchanger ( no gunk at all) changing sensors and PCB, it's even worse with several radiators only getting mildly warm to the touch. Incompetence or just Sod's law? And still no water above 29degree. It took 3 hours last night before two radiators even got warm.... And of course it would be the hall and lounge, main areas further away. The latest wheeze is that if a new gas valve doesn't sort it, rather than rip up the solid oak flooring to chase the 15mm pipe junction, they suggest drilling holes in the walls and running the wider pipe outside the house and back in.......pointless imho as this completely ignores that the boiler has been fine with 15mmwhich they installed in the first place. I'm not inclined to agree to this given there's no guarantee it will actually sort it either. Fabiamk2se mentions the supply gas pressure - vaillant manuals says minimum pressure at test reference point should be 16mbar. Standing pressure is 21mbar at the boiler, dropping to 17mbar when calling for hot water. So it's close , too close it appears. Roll on today's engineer visit and more wild stabs in the dark....
  17. It's a Ecotec Pro 28. The heating side of things work fine - radiators get hot....not scalding hot, but hot enough to get the rooms warm. The hot water side initially ramps to 50degrees but the modulates down to 29degrees. The BG engineer has been onto Valiant twice already......hence cleaning out the gas valve, as there's a drop in gas pressure at the boiler itself, though no evident or traceable gas leakage. I've queried the gas supply pipe to the boiler, as it's 22mm off the meter, but somewhere it changes to 15mm at the boiler. Very surprised at this, as it was installed by BG themselves and I was under the impression legal requirement was 22mm/28mm, especially for Combi's that need a high flow of gas on demand to get water hot enough. Vaillant are now suggesting removing and cleaning out the plate heat exchanger.....lets see what happens. Thank goodness this is a fixed cost repair! I hate technology when it goes wrong......
  18. We just bought a house! the previous owners had a new Vaillant Combi fitted in 2011 by British Gas, and our mortgage provider have is a free boiler service with BG too and everything checked out. after three weeks, we fitted a Tado Smart thermostat for the heating side of things, and happy days. however, two weeks after that, hot water had basically disappeared and the boiler only delivered about 30degrees max before running cold. As we're on a service contract, BG have been back three times now.. First they said it was the meter and regulator..... And national grid checked and disagreed. service visit, they diagnosed either the PCB our sensors. ... Which have been replaced this morning.... still not getting proper hot water. The engineer had been on worth Vailkant and dismantled the gas valve in their advice as pressure drops at that point. nothing. it works fine on test, at max, but normal demands for hot water it simply doesn't get hot enough or get enough gas.... Any Corgi types got any ideas, because todays engineer had been here for nearly 4 hours now and is really like to stop the ' throw parts at it till something sticks' approach....
  19. You've not met SWMBO. I cringe whenever I hear a thud/bang/clank and the phrase "whoopsie" being uttered. Happens frequently, as she has zero mechanical sympathy.
  20. House Husband (currently) Love that I get to buy and cook food each day for SWMBO while looking for work. Hate the fact I'm now in responsible for the cleaning....very steep learning curve! She nearly collapsed laughing at the number of towels I'd washed and put in the dryer - told me I'd need to wash them all again....Apparently, a washing machine with a 7Kg load capacity doesn't actually mean it can properly wash 7kg of towels..... :wonder:
  21. Well, the largesse of family means we're probably looking at around 65%-75% LTV. Which sounds great. Speculative mortgage calcs (obviously not based on specific circumstances) indicate repayments that are 60% of our current rent. House insurance quote has reduced by 20%, which I don't understand - to my mind building & contents should be more than simply contents? But as I'm now officially unemployed and SWMBO only has four months work history, it would have to be in her name - could be disappointing before we even get to the offer stage. Initial discussions with the bank was hugely positive till I mentioned that last bit, and the woman pulled a face like Hyacinth Bucket upon spotting Onslow coming round the corner! Cue the smorgasbord of disappointment! (love that phrase, Grr666)
  22. SWMBO and i are about to try and get on the property ladder. The current landlord needs to sell up and we did manage to get a six month extension on our contract, which worked for both of us.....but that means the clock is ticking. I understand that there are a number if things that need to take place in the process (surveys, land searches) but our biggest thought right now is "how much do we offer?' in order to stand a realistic chance of it being accepted......90%? 95%.....92.37%? The other issue is this whole chain thing. We need to be able to take occupancy by end of january, as we need to be out by early feb. And before anyone suggests it, buying this place from the landlord has been considered, but any mortgage based on valuation wouldn't leave enough room to do what we would consider necessary works over the next 12 months ( replace lots of external brickwork, half the double glazing, kitchen and temperamental gas flow on the range cooker). so, in buying a place, assuming you make an acceptable offer, can you specify a date for completion/exchange/vacant possession? Also, regarding conveyancing - if the vendors estate agent offers it in house, is it better to opt for it (removes potential slow down, as it's in their best interests to finish on time) or not?
  23. Clarkson's contract wasn't renewed, therefore how can he be bound by the terms of something that is essentially no longer in force? And as "Le Grande Fromage" points out, restricting his right to work in a field for which he is qualified.....bring on the lawyers and the popcorn. Unless he signed a compromise agreement, there's little Auntie can realistically do. Given the global broadcast market now, with sat and net broadcasters, nothing to realistically stop him doing a car show.
  24. Due to changes in my working situation, my annual mileage is going to be substantially reduced. I took out my current policy with an annual mileage of 23000. However, my commute reduction will knock off nearly 7000 of that from the end of July till policy renewal early October. Is it likely to be worth notifying them of this, in terms of a reduction in premium, or would the "admin fees" make it a case of me handing them more money for nothing? Obviously, going forward in October, I'd anticipate a smaller premium, but probably wiped out my price hikes I'm reading about in the industry.
  25. Dragging the topic back on topic.... I was creeped out by my colleague stating they loved cookies and loved eating cookies, as they munched half a pack of said biscuits. 'Cookie' being a slang term in part of SA for a lady garden.........
