  1. There's a good guide with pics here: http://www.s****monkey.com/vw/jetta/2006/remove_engine_cover/
  2. Jeezus guys come on, on an 08 tfsi the air filter is inside the engine cover, you have to remove the whole thing to get to it and it can be a right pain to get off. Search here and Google for "tfsi engine cover removal".
  3. I did this. Picked up the RCD for around £100. I also had to buy and fit a newer CAN Gateway to avoid battery drain, but if your car is 08 or newer you should be ok on that. Installed an internal aerial on the corner of the windscreen. It's difficult for me to tell if this is actually a compromise or not as the area where I live is appalling for digital radio reception, but all the BBC DAB channels are rock solid, and most others are when I get out of the valley. Quite a few pics of my installation here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/51707969@N04/8203011214/in/set-72157632058161464/
  4. Sorry your first post is slightly confusing, did the aircon problems start 6 months after you bought the car or 6 months after the warranty ran out? If you reported the issue while the car was still in warranty and it's still not fixed even though the car is now out of warranty you'd have a very strong case for it to still be their responsibility to rectify it FOC.
  5. It'll be the condenser, it always is, it's a well known weakness. I'd be fighting very hard to get them to replace it under warranty.
  6. No not sorted mine yet, putting it off as costs seems to be around £6-700. Might not be the same for yours though, when was it last re-gassed? Could just need a re-gas.
  7. Not sure if I'll be able to get the front off without some significant dismantling though, anyone taken a dash pod apart?
  8. I have this too, got a leak somewhere most likely from the condenser, the system whines when there's no gas in. Worth getting it re-gassed and seeing if the noise goes away. Condenser replacement is pretty expensive too unfortunately.
  9. It's the button/switch in the dash itself that seems to be the issue, the one right next to the readout. Controlling the functions of the trip computer using the rocker on the end of the right stalk still works perfectly, thanks though.
  10. Hi All, 06 vRS with basic dash display. Wondering if anyone else has experienced this. I've recently noticed my odometer/trip display behaving very strangely. When driving it will periodically switch from total miles to trip miles, and when showing trip miles will reset itself regularly, all of this without me going anywhere near the button. Although twisting left/right for clock adjustment works fine, I'm guessing the contact when pressing the button in is a bit f*cked, It's not a major issue at the moment, but it's bothering me and obviously if I ever come to sell it'll look a bit dodgy. It also doesn't look like a single replaceable part, am guessing I'd have to replace the whole dash, which will obv be a significant cost for such a small problem!
  11. There is only a brake wear indicator on the front nearside, not one on the rear so check your fronts too.
  12. Yeah looks like it. Does it have a flacid green rubber diaphragm?
  13. Not seen any good aftermarket solutions. Myself and a few others here have retro-fitted genuine parts (How-to link in my sig), but it can take quite a bit of effort to acquire all the parts. Parts do come up semi-regularly on ebay if you keep an eye out. £200 fitted from a dealer doesn't actually sound that bad when you know what's involved as there's a fair bit of stuff needed.
  14. Yeah all the online guides are remarkably casual about removing the damn thing, and fail to mention the awkward bolt. Good luck!
  15. Nope, gotta be done from underneath, it's buried right up behind the engine. The undertray is just a piece of thick plastic, held on by 15-20 T25 torx screws if I recall correctly, with some locating points at the front to join it to the bottom of the front bumper. Straight-forward to remove if a little time-consuming. Need to get the car up to a decent height too, on ramps at least so you can move your elbows around as you'll need to get your hands at quite specific angles for access as there's a drive shaft right in the way. It's held on by three allen bolts, two of which are easy enough to access but the third is a bit awkward, essentially it's on the far side of the valve and you can't really see it so have to access it by feel. We had to fashion a longer allen key by cutting the "L" off a standard one and locating it in its own socket which I could ratchet. The connector to it can be a bit fiddly to undo too, but if you have a look at the replacement valve you'll see how it connects so you can work out where to squeeze the connector off the original. Edit: good video here of where it's located: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BiBqDcWSYCU
  16. ABC Car Service in Pudsey/Stanningley isn't too far away. Many Briskodians have used and recommended them, my vRS is currently there for service/cambelt swap/rear alignment and aircon diagnosis.
  17. Rough idle can usually be sorted by replacing the PCV valve, a v.cheap and easy* fix, well known issue. *very easy, as long as you can get the engine cover off!
  18. Sigh. Do you think it might have been pertinent to mention that in the original post? What offset are the FX4s?
  19. The part is available, but only in black, so you'll need to spray (with a flexible paint) it if you reeeeaaally want silver, or leave it black (which actually looks much better once it's in place). It should only cost around a fiver from a dealer, there's been loads of threads on this over the years, there must be a part number round here somewhere...
  20. Don't underestimate how hard it is to get the damn thing off though... total pain. You'll also need a caliper rewind tool as the piston twists back.
  21. I'm slightly concerned/annoyed - despite having also received a letter from RAC supposedly reassuring me that my level of cover would be identical to that of Skoda Assist - as I had to call them out after a warning light popped up on my dash last week and all that showed up was a bloke with a car transporter from a local company who didn't appear to have any of the extensive sort of equipment a proper RAC van might. As it happens, my issue resolved itself, but if it hadn't and he'd had to transport me to my nearest dealer for something that could potentially have been resolved at the side of the road with the right equipment I'd have been mightily p1ssed off.
  22. The armrest mechanism is totally separate and detachable from the rest of the centre section and is definitely replaceable. See link in my sig for detailed pics.
