After a first or second wash with liquid detergent ONLY..Powdered detergent can leave dusty residues
I use them for Engine bay, sills, wheel arches, inner wheels...then bin them if they are too bad....without asking 'Her indoors'

As you say..some people can't always clean their car regularly due to weather and other factors
I would get some tar remover and follow that with a light claying to remove all contaminants
Iron out product too if you can..follow with a light polish
Then apply with a good wax

Its a bitumin coat (Stone Guard) that is applied to the car before being sprayed...Perfectly normal
