New Car Cleaning (well sort of)

Featured Replies

I noticed that my car (which I haven't washed since I got it in Sep 14) has black  lines  on most of the bodywork  they look like scratches until you look closely and they are collections of muck.  It looks like some of the adhesive was left on the car by the dealer (from the protective stuff they ship in)  and the winter's muck has attached to it.

Any suggestions as the best way to remove - it doesn't wash off - would Tar remover be too harsh?

I'd suggest a very good wash first & then use a tar-remover, good skills in leaving it 7 months until washing it :giggle:

It always raining here in the winter  :D

As you say..some people can't always clean their car regularly due to weather and other factors

I would get some tar remover and follow that with a light claying to remove all contaminants

Iron out product too if you can..follow with a light polish

Then apply with a good wax

If you're not confident

PM me and I can do it for you

Shampoo took off the adhesive on my car

Sorry for slightly hi-jacking your thread io1901 but have been looking at the CarPro products and they have a few different iron out and tar remover products, but they also have a combined iron out/tar remover, Trix Iron and Tar remover. Any thoughts on this Chris or are you better off with separate products for each? Cheers.

I've found you are better having separate products for each task, IMO Trix isn't great.

Cheers, thanks for quick reply, just about to click the order button for a few bits and pieces..

Apologies for not replying

No wifi in the restaurant here

I've not tried Trix so don't know how effective it is

I use Tardis and IronX type products separately

What did you end up buying?

Didn't actually get around to ordering yet but was looking at Car Pro Iron X LS fallout and Car Pro Tar X, don't see Tar dis on cleanyourcar's site, where do you get it and is it a better bet than Tar X?

I think I bought mine from Autosmart Direct

Can't be sure

EBay is another option

22 quid for 5Litres at polished bliss, who do free delivery (sorry, just noticed you are in Dublin). I also picked up wolf decon gel as a fallout remover, was £10 for a litre. No idea how it sits in the grand scheme but it was cheap(ish) and says on the bottle that you can let it dry without adverse effects which is handy in the warmer months. Absolutely stinks though like most fallout removers, though I hear korrosol smells better than most if that bothers you. You'd need to get spray bottles for each unless you have some, which will certainly need chem proof for tardis and possibly the fallout remover.

autosmart sell through franchises, so if you get on their site you should be able to track down your local rep, there looked to be a couple in Eire from the map. As Chris says Ebay is an option but very much buyer beware.

Trix wasnt the worst thing in the world, actually did quite a good job on my folks unloved wheels, but you're much better off with separates. Even ignoring the performance, the thing they dont tell you with Trix is that its two liquids that dont mix in the same bottle, so you have to shake it often to keep applying both products.

Where abouts do you live? Autobrite Direct are on the wolstanton retail park turn off of the A500 and would sell you the appropriate kit with a little advice too, or they have a full time detailer if you really dont want to touch it. They also run a beginners detailing course if you want to take care of your motor. (it does involve touching it more than once a year though   - excuses aside :rain:  :rain:  :rain:  :rain:  :rain:  :p )

Or, go and see Chris which is what I did, before I learned the ropes, so to speak.  Bit of a trek though, 2hours + for you.

Cheers, thanks for that, think I'll just order it from polished bliss and get a couple of spray bottles. Thanks for info.

Just to update this. It was very nice weather on Saturday so (using the stuff I had in the garage)  washed (using two buckets ;)), dried,  removed the adhesive with some Tar remover ,(and some of the original plastic protection was still on in places) , washed the panels again and dried with microfibre towel.  Light hand polish with  Autogym SRP and then wax with AutoGylm HD.  Washed and waxed the Alloys (off as I have steel winters on) and then put them on the car.

It certainly looked a little bit more silvery ;)

I think I missed a couple of steps - I might get a few more bits in for next time - it's not like I wash the cash every day ;)

This morning for the first time in six months I noticed that a dirty great pigeon had spied a freshly cleaned car and had decided to spoil it.  (It has been rinsed off with the hose.)

Nice one

Good start
