  1. |All I am doing is to make a rational point based upon accurate numbers- emotion doesnt come into maths.I will leave it at that .
  2. Do the maths- and park the emotion please. In the 10 years since 9/11 we have had approx 30,000 people killed in road traffic accidents in UKand fewer than 100 deaths caused by terrorism .I dont know what the US figures are but will obviously be far higher than ours.Terrorism works by frightening most people but killing - in relative terms - low numbers.
  3. CCTV is more common in this country than anywhwere else apart from North Korea I once read- and I do not subscribe to the 'if you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear' nonsense.I have something to hide- my privacy. I take your point about terrorism (which is inevitably more bark than bite- check the numbers killed on the roads compared to by terrorism)) but I believe that personal liberty to go where I want without somebody watching me on a camera is a fundamentally important right in a free country..
  4. In just the same way I loathe the proliferation of CCTV - both public and private- I really cannot abide the thought of following a car which is covertly filming me. I have been victim of car break ins but damned if I'd resort to this degree of paranoia.Friends with Sevens often use little cameras on track days which is just fine but general public use..no bloody thanks. Suspect the RIPA legislation may have some relevance here ?
  5. Crikey- after all doom and gloom that I will be waiting till the summer MSB rang to tell me it exists and is on its way- collect 2-3 weeks. Now will wait for Tiguan to break because they always know hwen they're about to be replaced..
  6. I am 100% sure. At least it makes a change from the usual EVO never never land stuff about 'how I upgraded my Murcielago's brakes for a very reasonable £7k and found I was saving up to half a second a lap. Money well spent then ! Next month...how I blew a shedload on a reasssuringly expensive aero upgrade '
  7. I had similar experience with my Tiguan. The Dealer investigated and replaced the propshaft under warranty
  8. When my Yeti arrives ( God knows ) I will be geting a set of winter tyres as have found them indispensable the last couple of winters here. But it is a faff getting the tyres swopped round every year (or buying an extra set of rims) so was thinking about some 'All Season'tyres - any thoughts /experience. Saw an ad for some - cannot recall maker- and thought'hmmmm'....
  9. Quite seriously if you need earplugs in most modern cars you have a problem which requires medical help. My hearing is not great (shooting , rock music, race meetings and a punctured eardrum from a Ligier GP car ) but I only experience any discomfort in my Seven - where I wear plugs obviously.
  10. Have had Tiguan for 3 years; too big, too heavy and godawful ride in Sport spec. Lovely solid feeling car and good cabin ambience. But drove a Yeti- lighter, infinitely better ride, smaller and I ordered a 140 Elegancein November. God knows when it will turn up.
  11. Hmm..well I am late fifties, enjoy loud rock music and drive my Caterham very briskly- if not as quickly as some older owners.Quite old is the term I apply to anybody more than 20 years older than I am . Suggest you take your Yeti out for a good run and see if you can get it to register 25mpg- the critter will enjoy it more than geriatric pootling- trust me !
  12. Cripes.. I get stirrings about my Caterham(especially after 3 months overwintering) but the last cars that did that were my Clan Crusader, 2CV6, 1300Ti Alfasud and Uno Turbo. And those were a looong time ago. Hope my Yeti can do the same but err ..not holding my breath.
  13. I am not remotely intersted in watching TV about useful information on everyday cars.It would bore me to tears. I read the serious stuff about trick supensions because I am in the tiny minority which is interested - but I watch TG to see supercars being thrashed and daft tatooing stunts . It;'s not about usefulness but about entertainment. And I shall curtail my Magnum habit next Summer..
  14. Sounds like the dinosaurs I used to work with in the 80s who demanded their right to receive a cheque for their wages instead of their a/c being credited. Nobody still uses cash in those amounts surely - what on earth is the point (apart from enabling an attack of righteous indignation when dealer says no )? Maybe I hang around with the wrong crowd.
  15. No- Wheelbase was a cure for insomnia. TG is a national institution and a huge earner for the BBC and I enjoy it hugely. But because I have car anorak tendencies I also read the serious stuff like Autocar for the important facts (which are rather dull for a mass audience). If JC drives a Yeti whilst eating an ice cream in a burning building on private land for a TV stunt Ithink that is JC's concern. I will confess to eating ice creams myself - in season. Is it illegal ? Cripes.
  16. Well Clarkson still makes me laugh- out loud !- which is more than a lot of TV does- his politics are a long way right of mine but he is a wordsmith . I don't know if any sad bugger has ever posted any youtube stuff of the William Woollard era but my God it was so dull. Reminds me of the legendary Autocar test of the Ferrarri Daytona in 1972ish -" We found the handbrake disappointing".. I think if I had the keys to a V12 174mph supercar it would not have been the damn handbrake I was building up my hopes about...
  17. That would make for catatonia- I doubt if 1% of the viewing public would care a hoot about the type of suspension or the list of options- just google it and you will get all the important but essentially dull facts you need. And the comment above re Escorts and 306s- just shows how diverse we are. The last iterations of the Escort were almost beyond bad- the 306 was a revelation- and I did a lot of miles in both but only spent my money on one. And of course we should have supercars being thrashed- I would not be paid to watch a Micra or a 307 being driven - unless it was off a cliff...
  18. You have to remember that TG is selling a product- cocking about for all the family. The original TG- and Wheelbase before it- was dull as ditchwater and JC turned the programme around from the TV equivalent of Which magazine to something the whole family watched. JC is a seriously good journalist and I have read his stuff since Performance Car days. But his USP is being controversial and daft- which suits me fine. He rightly loathed the Vectra and after the shockwaves subsided from the legendary TG featuring that horrid car it became ok to take the pi** in this type of programme. I don't really care whether he likes Yetis or not frankly- just hope it's good telly. But strange how so many people seize on to fact that JC likes their car but so quick to rubbish him if he doesn't . Fact is some folk buy really crap cars- Nissan Bluebird anybody ? 206 ?
  19. Too much boring stuff to list. Less boring include 2CV6, Alfasuds, Uno Turbos, Clan Crusader, SuzukiSC100 (ghastly) and two Caterham Sevens (both sublime)
  20. Sadly the days of opening the bonnet to show off your carlos fandango twin webered double overhead cam mill (breathed on by Speedwell or Downton ) are long gone. The last daily driver I had which had a recognisable engine was at least 30 years ago. Not too much fun showing off some plastic shrouding and an ECU cover is it? .
  21. So if ordered a TDI 140 Elegance in early November , dealer suggesting Marchish delivery when does the collective wisdom on here think I might be saddling up my Yeti?
  22. I am delighted that I am now not the only one who has ordered a Yeti in Green and Gobi.I wobbled at last minute and nearly ordered a blue or silver but stuck to my guns . Mine will be a 140 Elegance and I think it will look fab
  23. Top Gear is a very funny TV programme for people of all ages which is strong on personalities and has a loose car based theme- the main one being 'cocking about'. TG magazine is bought by people who think they are car enthusiasts because they watch TG and/or once went to a BTCC meeting when they won salesman of the month award. The Sun sells more than the Times but ..ermm..not really a better paper.Or even a newspaper at all really. Havoig said that- and yes, tongue in cheek of course - both May and Clarkson are very good journalists even if JC's politics are certainly not mine.
  24. LIke all car magazines Top Gear doesnt actually pay for test cars - they are loaned by the manufacturer. Mind you , whilst anybody would buy Top Gear magazine is beyond me- the TV stuff is a hoot but if I want to know about cars I read Autocar(and EVO for sporty stuff)
  25. I don't get it really- if you want a Yeti to handle better buy a Golf.I have only ordered one because I need 4x4 ability and ground clearance. Making a Yeti go better on a track day seems like getting my Caterham to handle mud and snow better..Still, each to their own.
