  1. Surely since they charge a fixed %age of your fund's total value to manage your plan (and FSA rules aside) they would be encouraging you to opt out and so contribute more?
  2. By 'house exchange' do you mean 'completion' or 'exchange of contracts'? If it's the latter, then oh well such is life. If it's the former, then everyone can sue the party who breached the contract to the extent that in 1000 years time his descendents will still be your slaves
  3. John Lewis pull your pants down on prices though, I'd rather save several hundred and shop online. What's the concensus on transporting plasmas then, and do you still need a two-man installation team? I thought you just risked breaking the screen under its own weight. I think I want plasma now, rather than LCD, after the thread when people said you needed a screen basically 10 feet tall if you don't sit with your nose pressed up against it. But not if the installation will be on the scale of building the pyramids for engineering dificulty.
  4. At my old firm one failed exam = instant redundancy
  5. Yep, even though we'd have exactly the same amount of crime as we currently do at least different people would be committing it, which is obviously much better.
  6. That's exactly right. Study after study has shown that the severity of punishment has no deterrent effect, but the likelihood of punishment has a huge effect. But why pay any attention to the actual facts? IT'S POLITICAL CORRECTNESS GONE MAD I TELL YOU...
  7. Just so long as you understand that by doing that, you are directly funding international terrorism
  8. I think that's fair enough, they aren't getting relocation allowance and when you work from home you still expect to be paid - why is working on the train any different?
  9. I wouldn't self-medicate before your procedure, but maybe you can ask for some kind of sedative to keep a smile on your face. I had something like that when I had my wisdom teeth pulled out in addition to the local anaesthetic, because I am a big girl. I was totally baked, didn't have a clue what was going on and when I was walked back into the crowded waiting room I embarassed SWMBO by describing my condition in terms of various other 'medication' I have taken in the past . They had to hold the pen in my hand for me to sign the bill, then they hurried me out the door onto the street where I promptly slumped in a mumbling heap and stayed there for about 20 mins, SWMBO being unable to move me In summary then if you have to be sensibly communicative during the procedure, or plan on doing anything else that day, then just grit your teeth and bear it .
  10. PMSL at the second car that pulls up to drive through the gates, waits for a second, decides the car on its roof is unlikely to move for the time being and then drives on
  11. I learned to corner using Gran Turismo - eg whenever I come up to a 90 degree right turn, I just handbrake at the last minute and slam the passenger side into an invisible wall before carrying on undamaged and with hardly any deceleration. SWMBO hates it when I do that
  12. 362 posts over at hexus.net, which I also started Internet traffic analysis by volume: P2P file sharing 20%, pornography 30%, plane on a treadmill 49%, other 1% (margin of error 1% )
  13. What are the odds, I was just looking at something similar: Fascias, Soffits, Cladding in White, Black, Mahogany, Rosewood, Golden Oak Apparently you fix them by 'secret nailing' ie nail the tongue such that the groove covers the nail head. I suppose you could screw them, and use those plastic screw caps instead if you wanted to.
  14. I've been playing BF2142 a bit, it's OK. Can't remember my rank but I've got a fair few unlocks now.
  15. Teach Yourself style? Amazon.co.uk: What Not to Wear: The Rules: Books: Susannah Constantine,Trinny Woodall Luckily I was born with it
  16. I'm a contractor, and a chartered accountant Some good advice above, and on PCG but really there is no substitute for going to see a real live accountant because everyone's situation is different. Eg I use an umbrella company and work entirely within IR35, noone would tell you to do that in a forum but an accountant will if it's the most appropriate vehicle for you
  17. Why not just put it in a shares ISA? Boring but they've been doing better than 15% per year, and tax free. 'The value of your investment may go down as well as up'. Surely they mean 'instead of'
  18. All > Boxes & Cartons - Packaging2u.co.uk - HTH
  19. Damn that's bad. Still the CAB will advise you for free now that you are unemployed :P As you say, you should get paid in lieu of notice and your contract is obviously valid from day 1. You just have to check whatever terms they have re probationary periods. And as said above look at the positives; you were obviously able to secure a job just three months ago so hopefully it won't be dificult this time. You will probably end up on more money than whatever that cowboy outfit were paying anyway
  20. What's all this 'pay protection' business? Do public-sector workers who are on too high a salary not have to take a pay cut or redundancy, but instead just stop getting annual rises until inflation causes the rest of the country to catch up? I can understand that the adjudication process would put a lot of noses out of joint but at the risk of sounding like Norman Tebbit, that doesn't sound too bad all in all. What stops them from just quitting anyway
  21. £1.30, good old screwfix Only thing about them is that you can never remove them (I think). I suppose you could chisel them out but you would have a bigger hole to repair than if you used the ones that screw in. Probably won't matter though, not for years anyhow.
  22. Either way, I probably wouldn't have to turn the central heating on ever again. Or be able to afford to, either
  23. Hhhmm then by my calculations if my sofa is 3 metres from the TV - I think it's about this distance - then to enjoy HD I'd need an 80" display  I don't think they make them that big but if they did, they would probably come with a free guide-dog Maybe I need to check my workings (I used the 3x height method)
