  1. Almost 65 and loving it(the Superb that is - not being almost 65). In my time have had Volvo, Mercedes, Mitsubishi, Ford, VW, Renault etc etc - the Superb Elegance 170 Tdi 4x4 is in the top 2...... Loved my Volvo S60 about 7 years ago. Also the Superb tows brilliantly - pulls like a train!
  2. Have any of you read the most recent Caravan Club monthly magazine (May edition)? There is a two page spread on Skoda Superb v Vauxhall Insignia. Never mind what they say about the Insignia, the Superb beats it hands down and gets "superb" marks in every section. I tow a large caravan with the 4x4 version of the Superb and it's fabulous! I totally agree with everything the magazine says. Worth reading.
  3. I have just added a comment in a different thread re-towballs. However, I used my caravan for the first time this year with my new Superb Hatchback 4x4 170 and I forgot to increase the tyre pressures (something I normally always do when towing). It wasn't long before the tryre pressure warning light lit up and this due to the extra weight of the caravan. I pumped the tyres up to the correct pressures, reset the TPM and all was well from then on. Now I am back home I've put the tyres back to the correct pressures. By the way, I have a pressure gauge on my foot pump but have always thought it was inaccurate, so I bought a new gauge from E-Bay (Race-X Professional Pressure Gauge) , recommended by Autocar Express and discovered the foot pump is out by 0.4 Bar (almost 6 psi). Thats a big difference!
  4. I had a Westfalia detachable towball retro-fitted three weeks ago by Trident Trailers in Maidstone - they carried out ALL the necessary procedures including resetting the on-board computer stuff. I did not have the Skoda towing preparation kit on purchase as I bought from the showroom, however, Trident Trailers fitted an appropriate kit. I used the caravan for the first time this year at the week-end and It all worked exactly as it should including all the visible/audible features on the Columbus. The cut out required from the rear bumper to accommodate the "ironwork" has been very neatly achieved so that nothing shows when the towball is removed and the retractable 13-pin electric connector also becomes non-visible once it's put into the "hidden" position. This is the third time they have retro-fitted a towball for me and I would highly recommend them. A LOT cheaper than having it done by Skoda! In addition they gave me back the steelwork removed from the car (the new towball comes with a replacement bumper bracket) so if ever I decided to remove the towball and fittings in the future, I can replace the old bracket to its original position and sell the car without towball - a bit pointless really but at least it's an option! I have a Superb Elegance 4x4 170 Hatchback and it tows like a steamtrain....fabulous - it's a heavy caravan and I averaged 29mpg mostly at 60mph with the van attached (real data NOT from the on-board trip thingy!!!). I've been towing caravans for almost 30 years now and this car tows as well as any 4x4 I've had in the past including a VW Tiguan and a Mercedes 4x4 M Class. I did forget to increase the tyre pressures on outward journey, but the on-board tyre pressure gauge soon lit up to let me know the tyres were too soft. Pumped them up to correct pressures to come home and hey presto - no tyre pressure warning light....simples!!!!!
  5. Go for the Superb - with the 0% VAT its a winner. I just changed my VW Tiguan 2.0TDi 140 (same sort of inside space as a Yeti) for a Superb Elegance Hatchback/Twindoor 2.0TDi 170 4x4 and WOW! So much space for EVERYTHING including passengers and luggage. A recent 1500 mile round trip in France on the Autoroutes at a fairly constant 120-130kph gave me a 45mpg return (fully loaded)! Thats almost exactly 10 miles per litre. AND thats REAL mileage not using the on-board computer jobbie which said 50mpg. I tow a caravan and this weekend will be its first link up to the Superb - am told its a great tow car and that more powerful 170 engine should be even better. The Tiguan was a great tow car and it has the same basic engine as the 140 Skodas. I saved over £4500 with their 0% VAT deal which made the Superb CHEAPER than the VW I bought 3 and a half years ago! A no-brainer really.
  6. Is it just me or are VirginMedia pulling a fast one.....so to speak????? I pay for and am supposed to get UP TO 50Mb and they say it's doubling up to 100Mb later this year. However, I NEVER get more than 25Mb on any of the on-line speedtesters. I have no doubt that one day we will reach a stage where everything is almost instantaneous BUT right now I'm very cautious about the claims made by Virgin.
  7. Having had a variety of roof boxes and roof rails over the years I have found my most recent purchase to be the best - its a Kamei (German I think) and comes with a 6-year warranty. The build quality is excellent, very sturdy, bone dry and has superb locking features - looks good too! With respect to roof rails, I have had to buy new ones for almost every car I've ever owned which is a pain (I have three sets in my garage which are about to go on eBay!). I haven't yet bought any new ones for my Superb Elegance Twindoor but will probably bite the bullet and get the Skoda ones - they look good and dont have any unnecessary sticking out parts.
  8. I also got 0% VAT and 0% interest on the balance for a Superb Elegance 170 4x4 including 0% VAT on the factory fitted extras. What a fabulous deal and a truly SUPERB car. Only had it a month and recently did over 1500 miles in France on the Autoroutes and with a full load (and I mean to the gunwhales) with cruise control set between 120 and 130 Kmph (70-75 mph) and got an average of 45mpg. The trip computer indicated 50 mpg so is almost 10% adrift - par for the course for the VAG group. All my family think the car is fabulous and gobsmacked by the amount of room for everyone and the size of the boot! I do find the tyres respond very differently to changing road surfaces in terms of cabin noise but generally speaking its very quiet. I bought the 4x4 specifically because I tow a caravan but as yet haven't got it out from its winter coat!!!!!!! Tow ball was retro-fitted (a Westfalia detachable) and everything still works as it should re-electronic gizmos and hope that will continue to be the case when the caravan is attached.
  9. I had a Suzuki Bergman 400 until 2 years ago (was in mint condition) then I sold it. Biggest mistake ever...... Soooooo, I decided to get another set of 2 wheels and now have a Honda SH300i.....MAGIC............. Even better and quicker than the larger engined Suzuki. However, as I don't like getting too wet and cold it's a fair-weather mode of transport....but fun! Having a choice of 2 wheels or 4 is the best outcome but of course the purchase price and insurance etc for the 2 wheeler would also have bought at least a couple of yearsworth of diesel for my Superb!
  10. I think there is something we can do about it but it will never happen due to apathy!!!! A collective country-wide boycott would work but there 's not a cats chance in hell it'd ever happen. They have us by the short and curlies and don't care.
  11. My last car was a diesel 4x4 VW Tiguan and did almost 30,000 before I changed them all (and I towed a caravan for over 4,000 of that 30,000). Now have a Superb Elegance 4x4 Twindoor (only done just over 300 miles so far) but I'll be really miffed if I have to buy new tyres as early as 15-20,000 miles. Mine are Continental SC2 which I've never had before so we'll see!!!!!!
  12. Typical political "screw the people who pay their taxes"......make sure the rich get richer and the working middle-class get screwed!!!! I'm now retired and as ever disgusted with politicians of all parties. They lie, they cheat, they break promises, they have no idea what is REALLY happening and yet they try to tell us all how we should live our lives. In my life time I've voted Conservative, Liberal and Labour and they have all let me and my family down big-time, so from now on in I ain't gonna bother........ they screw up the country and we have to pay for their ****-ups.......in my working life I'd have got the sack if I'd performed as they do. AND NOW b****y Halifax BS have increased my Mortgage even though the Bank Rate has stayed the same because they say "the reason we are changing the interest rate now is as a result of market conditions and the increased cost of borrowing money"...............whose b****y fault was that? It wasn't mine and yet I have to pay for it.......... Yes...I'm angry and sick to death of the lot of them............................................ At least my new Skoda Superb is great (made in Czech Republic though!!!!)
  13. Added the stainless steel rings (from SuperSkoda.com) around the air-con control dials on Superb Elegance - looks much better!!!!!
  14. I'm not too sure I've got this right so please bear with me..........I have just take delivery of a Superb Elegance 4x4 2.0Tdi Twindoor and as it was bought from the showroom rather than factory ordered it comes with the repair kit rather than a spare wheel of any sort. I was going to retro-order a spare wheel and I know, unless I do otherwise it will be what they call a spacesaver with a 16" rim rather than the 18" which are on the car. Can anyone tell me, will the spare wheel well accommodate a full size 18" alloy? (eg an 18" Themisto). I know it will be expensive to get a matching single Themisto alloy, but for the sake of use only if/when a puncture, I'd rather a full size wheel allowing normal driving than a spacesaver with a 50mph max. I also tow a caravan and would feel more confident knowing the replacement wheel is a normal full size match even if the alloy is a different design. Any views folks????? John
  15. Finally got it..........Superb Elegance 2.0 TDi Twindoor 170 4x4 in Steel Grey....what a car......it's great. Traded in a 2008 VW Tiguan SE which I had from new and was so hard to part with as it's such a great tow car. Have only done about 20 miles in the Skoda so far but I am well pleased..........................but Jesus it's BIG!!!!!! John
  16. So you see Mdon, I'm not the only one who thinks two of the Top Gear presenters are ........ I better not say due to the laws of libel!!!!!!
  17. R Hammond and J Clarkson are the most amazingly immature "men" on TV. I fail to see why a well educated person like May can even work with them........ I can't bear to watch them any more...... John
  18. I pick up my Superb Elegance 2.0TDi 4x4 on Thursday. Was bought from the showroom so bought as seen specs. I asked about a retro-fit detachable towbar and was quoted £1000....... Ha b********y ha! Having it done by a specialist company at end of March BUT still £650 cause the car hasn't had the towball prep package and there's a lot of work involved if you want it to "talk properly" to the on board computer thingamajig. I have been assured the cars warranty will not be invalidated and they will provide the relevant guarantee. Have used them for two previous cars and know they are v good. I firmly believe you get what you pay for but the Skoda quote is a joke! John
  19. It really is a shame that we are all so dependant on petrol/diesel. One sure fire way to make the Government sit up and think is if we could all refuse to buy any.....period! The loss to the Governments income, not to mention the petrol giants would be enormous and would force a rethink. Fuel prices are the main cause of our obscene inflation rates and yet although we keep moaning, we still keep buying the stuff! I know this is a "pie in the sky" idea but boy would it have an impact. I would do it if everyone else would.....I bet not many would though. John
  20. I hope my decision turns out to be a good one. About 3 weeks ago I went to view a Yeti (I tow a caravan) with the wife who said she didn't like the look of it even before we got there!!!!!! The salesman then showed me a Superb Elegance Twindoor 170 manual 4x4 which just happened to be in the showroom - I was gob-smacked and after test driving one (admittedly it was the Combi version) I was hooked. As the Superb I have agreed to buy is a showroom car (not a demonstrator) and as I have been assured it is a 2012 model (Steel Grey) - I decided not to wait months for a new build - and so pick it up next week. I have searched and searched and searched the internet for reviews, videos on YouTube, owners comments etc and cannot find a single negative report. I tow with a 2.0TDi 140 VW Tiguan at the moment (which is a great towcar), about 40mpg solo and 25mpg when towing - I just hope the decision I've taken proves to be a good one. A replacement Tiguan with the same specs as the Skoda would have cost me almost £10,000 more taking into consideration the curent 20% special offer from Skoda! no-brainer really. John
  21. I keep reading about using VCDS to improve economy....what is it and does it make any difference? John - from Kent
  22. I think I meant the R8 - my comments were tongue in cheek and I was just taking an attempted humorous poke....hey ho! - failed again.
  23. I'm not too sure I've got this right so please bear with me..........I am about to take delivery of a Superb Elegance 4x4 2.0Tdi Twindoor and as it was bought from the showroom rather than factory ordered it comes with the repair kit rather than a spare wheel of any sort. I was going to retro-order a spare wheel and I know unless I do otherwise it will be what they call a spacesaver with a 16" rim rather than the 18" which are on the car. Can anyone tell me, will the spare wheel well accommodate a full size 18" alloy?. I know it will be difficult if not impossible to get a matching single Themisto alloy, but for the sake of use only if/when a puncture, I'd rather a full size wheel allowing normal driving than a spacesaver with a 50mph max. I also tow a caravan and would feel more confident knowing the replacement wheel is a normal full size match even if the alloy is a different design. Any views folks????? John
  24. vRS Carl - you spent almost 8k tuning it up?????? Oh well, easy come easy go.... you're not a banker by any chance are you? Why not buy an Audi RS8 in the first place an be dome with it??????
