Mac advice - Macbook Pro

Featured Replies

Got a Mac Mini and some of that just doesn't work, mainly printers but there is the random noise on the screen during video issue too. It's certainly better but not perfect.

The reason the mac appears so good against a PC is IMHO, that there is an extremely limited set of hardware it runs on and this can be fully tested. You can't ever fully test every possible PC configuration as there are millions.

The screen issues are IMHO a QC issue and is often the case with apple it seems Gen 1 is a good one to avoid as Gen 2 will usually fix the issues.

As I said above it's what I have seen from people who owned them when I was still around uni and they had just come out. Nothing is perfect, least of all dells ;)

I was a rabid Dell fanboy till i bought the MBP.....

Ahh fanboys. MBP now? ;)

Nope. I'll still quite happily suggest a Dell, assuming you can't stretch to a Macbook, if you want to play games or "argue with the indian call centre" should the Dell go wrong.......:P

Having purchased two Mac Mini's (1st gen model, which IIRC, Fluff bought off me anyway; and a 2nd gen), 2 iMacs, 4 Macbooks and 2 Macbook Pro's....QC issues are a reality that afflicts all.........and surely, if there was a graphics fault on yours, you'd have sought remedy by now? Or could it be the cable or screen is actually the source of the noise? I've never encountered anything like that with a Mac or a PC ( in 15 years, and 1000's of them professionally) unless the monitor itself is on the way out or there is a driver issue (PC).

Keeping track of the Apple generation can be harder than you might think - the Macbook Pro went throughat least 3 "revisions" I know of before it went to "true" 2nd gen with the Santa Rosa chipset........

If you're waiting the for model to come out that's faultless, well, it'd be a long wait.:)

OP - It was you that bought the Mini, wasn't it? What happened?

It's a known issue on the first Gen Mini from some googling and when we sought a fix under apple care they gave the there isn't an issue.

Since the TFT is a very good one and the MAC does it on all I have tried when running at 1280x1024 or above I'd suggest it isn't the monitor(s).

They do tend to do that, but then, I haven't come across a manufacturer that doesn't try that one at some point to get out of a warranty claim.

It's just that Apple get worse press (IMHO only) because the charge a premium price for their product so Customer expectations are a higher (again, only my own experience - I only tolerate the screen bend because I've seen them more bent, it seems a consistent "feature" and it doesn't affect performance for me)

Well to resurrect this old thread :D

I made the decision to go with a Macbook, which nearly never happened after applying to Mac Business for a lease, I was told I did not meet their business model requirements. I found that odd as I passed credit scoring etc.

Anyway, after a few weeks of trawling around, I got a MB in white, 2.4ghz core duo and 2GB (now upgraded to 4GB) of RAM.

As a small business notebook, it's a great tool, the only thing I am missing at the moment is Company of Heroes :D but I have got an SLi monster PC for that anyway.

I'm still not a mac convert, and think that the MB is as far as it will ever go because there's not enough flexibility in other mac solutions to feed my FPS habit, for what it is, it's a fine bit of kit, small, light, all the business apps I need and nifty built in apps.

The cheapest place I found in the end was Dixons tax free as I am flying out to Hamburg every week for a while I put in an order to collect, I managed to get £35 knocked off the £705 tax free price bringing the cost of the MB to £670.

So there you go :) thanks for the advice folks, I was almost ready to buy the MBP just for games support, but from the advice here and after some playing around I settled on the MB and am not disappointed.

I think you've made the right choice. Although the graphics of the MBP are better; the games are still not there. (unless you boot to Windows, in which case you may as well have bought a cheapy PC.)

My 1st Mac frustrated me quite a bit initially, until I stopped trying to use it like I do Windows machines. Now I find it frustrating going back to Windows, as I use Mac's quite a bit more.

Well even in my limited use I am loving features like the touchpad .... much more functional than my previous windows laptops, and given that my digital camera captures movies in .mov format, I look forward to trying some of the video apps out when I have time at the weekend, I have got a stack from bike / car events I want to compile.

COD4 on my SLi 8800GTX Rig is sweet as it get's so I will stick with my PC for games playing and I am glad I made the crossover to mac for my mobile platform. I have been playing with NeoOffice today, and whilst it's not as pretty as real mac apps, it's got everything I need for spreadsheets etc ..... a  from me so far
