Is diesel still worth it ?

Featured Replies

Intresting thread this.... petrol/diesel road tax & insurance, driving styles/roads driven on.... so many different factors can contribute to some of the stats and figures banded about.

One thing for sure though, regardless of fuel type, running a decent size car with a bit of grunt is an expensive business these days... regardelsss of if its a diesel or a V-Power TFSI.

As a foot note, even SWMBO has started to coment on how much more it costs to run her car now - she drives an Aygo (60mpg+, £70 annual service, £150 pa insurance and £35 road tax)...

Really??

My ST produces it's 220 odd horses on normal 95ron stuff :D

Any effects on mpg and smoothness of delivery? My TFSI runs like a bag of spanners, is down on power and is less economical when it has 95ron in it.... it's not even that keen on 97ron fuel

I did the first 4500 miles on 95ron no probs, it's only the last 1000 miles that I've been using 98ron or higher and I can't tell any difference in the car what so ever, will see what the mpg is like at the weekend but so far I've seen no increase.

I did some test on my Mitsu Eclipse with 2.4L engine where I use only V-Power. I do a lot of ECU readings and I checked 3 different Shell stations for best results. I only found one that had readings on 95+ octane where other 2 had it at >75 octane on V-Power petrol. For my avg 20mpg was huge difference to go to 23-25mpg. Check for better stations. I found the best one for my beast was found only on Shell stations.

My Octy 1.9TDI 105 (bought 2nd hand 6 months ago) is my first diesel car after a driving petrol cars since I passed my test 18 years ago.

What I wanted was a decent amount of torque for overtaking and I found that only a diesel can give you that PLUS decent economy. I think if I wanted a petrol car with decent thrust inthe mid range, the economy will take a hammering.

My last car was a Peugeot 306 1.6 and I think I got something like 400 miles from a 60litre tank. I get about 550miles from a 55 litre tank on my Octy so that's better PLUS I have far better performance! Did consider the 1.6FSI which is the closest petrol to the 1.9TDI but I read reports that it was a bit sluggish and the fact that you need Super unleaded to get best economy. I guess it depends on what you want. The 1.4 TSI 120 has had good reports but I hear that there are supply problems for VW on that one at the moment.

I have had a 105PD since new (Sept 2004). Average fuel consumption is 55 mpg. Long motorway runs can return 70 mpg.

I still think that diesel is worth it.

Interesting results, I've only had 2 tank fulls of of v-power the rest was 98ron stuff on the continent. I have only the one local shell station and I have to go out of my way to get it, might have to try the Tesco stuff instead.

get your EGR blanked off then :P

Can't do it on that engine. Throws the EML light and goes into safe running. The ECU knows from the lambda that the EGR isn't working. :(

Even tried disabling the EGR when it was remapped and it wouldn't have any of it. Damned emission controls. :(

Mine also runs perfect on 95 RON.

Its worth it when you manage 60mpg+ "commuting" (or attempting to) in the Oxford area..

If anyone has ever experienced commuting in Oxford during School Term time they will know what I mean!

Having just bought a diesel for the economy and , with a particulate filter , a relatively clean engine , I was interested to read the comments of Honest John in the Telegraph where he is rapidly falling out of love with diesel because -

1. the "diesel" premium on cars .

2. the increasing price of diesel over petrol at the pumps .

and most interestingly , as a result of his " knowledge of the industry " and letters from drivers in his reader columns

3. the increasing unreliability of the current generation of diesel engines because of the huge increase in technology being incorporated into them . He cited in particular Mazda who previously had a an enviable track record in reliability , but after about 70k were becoming a nightmare in some cases .

Interestingly , my daughter has a company Mazda , two cats , a husband and a job and a young son . Needless to say the car does not get a look in when it comes to care - twice I have quietly opened the bonnet , to find that there is no oil on the dipstick , anywhere ! ..... and the car is still going , plus the fact that there is a permanent light on the dashboard to say that there is water in an oil filter .

So I just wonder as to whether it is more a case of simple lifestyle that people , not in this community may I add , just do not look after cars nowadays and hence the increasing unrelability .

don't know if anyone else mentioned this but the other factor to consider is driveability. Having got used to diesel grunt, petrols can be hard work for me...

I've tried both, and I like petrol better.

James May said it well...

"Driving a diesel is like playing a kids xylophone... you get a good tune going then run out of notes"

:iagree:

Much prefer a turbo petrol to a turbo diesel engine. :)

Yours sounds better too ;)

I find the petrol easier to drive as well. :)

I heard a 2.0FSI Eos the other week and mistook it for TDi...
