Is downsizing really an option ?

Featured Replies

People seem to forget the single biggest cost of owning a car is depreciation. Many cars depreciate by over £200 a month, so the increase in fuel cost almost seems insignificant... ;)

Have to say its getting tempting to sell up, cut my losses, and roll round in a grands worth of Mondeo or something.

In the next 6-9months we're planning on upsizing Nicci's clio to account for a baby next year which will also mean we'll need a bigger boot.

Mk1 Octy vRS it is. Insurance isnt really that much different but tax is :(

Knew it wouldn't be long before you wanted to change your car again.

As for the depreciation - yes , that is about the same as my car is costing me in fuel.

It's something that was covered by my car allowance from work , but as the fuel bills are rising I'll need to "spend" less on depreciation to keep the total cost at about the same level.

That's why I'll be going for a cheaper option next time.

A Fiat Bravo with 5 year warranty is looking very promising as I can effectively fix much of the costs overy a longer period and have a lower overall monthly depreciation.

Plus it's a bloody good looking car

  Me? :P

I could save about £5k a year by just keeping the same car for more than 12 months!!!

The other option would be to spend more on the baby accessories so you get things which fold to a very compact size. Chances are they'll depreciate less than a larger car too... :)

Rob.

FFS Tom, you just ditched the passat!

Seriously though, there is no point selling your car inside of a year from new unless you got an amazingly good deal on it and can sell it for more than you paid or virtually the same.

Agreed Rob, I once had a good experience with a hired LT35 Long Wheel Base, High Top Van and a house full of stuff to be moved.

i wanted originally a car between the fabia and octy in size as i found the octy to big and the fabia too small. ended up going for the octy as i dont feel safe in small cars and wanted a car that would give us a bit more protection and also big enough to carry all the stuff i would need to carry on holiday.

oh and the fuel economy on the octy is much better than my old 1.6 astra gave.
