Cracked Laptop screen - Insurance!

Featured Replies

I have cracked the corner of my laptop screen and now it doesn't display the full screen :thumbdwn:

I have contacted my insurance company who have arranged for a company called Ival to contact me, has anyone had any dealings with them???

Will Ival try and repair the screen (it's a Sony Vaio small widescreen laptop) or will they just replace the whole unit?

Your thoughts and suggestions would be appreciated.

I would think they would replace the screen, or if it's cheaper replace the whole thing.

Trouble is these days insurance companies don't throw round cheques any more like they used to.

New lid of the laptop probably as the labour charge is low.

Regardless treat is as if you will never see the thing again and make sure you backup your data.

They will attempt a repair if they can get a new screen but that depends on the age of the machine etc.

Maybe worth a look on flebay to see if you can get a screen yourself, that may work out cheaper than your excess and increase in premium next year.

I had a toll box containing a 18v Dewalt drill, 2 batteries and charger drop 1.5 meter onto my laptop and all it did was crack the case of the screen.

It was a Toughbook though and made from magnesium alloy, lol.

The screen can't be repaired, they will have to replace the whole LCD panel. Laptop screens can be £200 - £300 alone

The screen is an unusual (apparently) 10.4 inch wide screen and the cheapest in can find on the net is £285! Hopefully the insurance company will just give in and let me buy a new one! HAPPY DAYS!! :D

How much was the lappy originally? And how old? And how much would it be to replace it with an equivalent?

Insurance will be looking at about £450 to repair it, so if a new unit would be £699 (for same small screen etc.) then they will repair it I would imagine.

It will be an equivalent model now, so if it's a 486 that was top of the line you will get the cheapest thing of similar spec now.

I once had somebody argue that since the laptop he had "dropped" was worth £3k when he bought it he should get a new £3k laptop.

I said well yours is intel so you can have an intel, but whatever we buy you will be far better that what you had, so you can naff off if you think you're getting £3k.

Some people will try though.

We are just getting into laptop repairs and the parts are turning out ot be quite cheap.

It cost about £1200 then, but I would be WELL happy if they gave me £450 towards a new one now! This thing is slow and has a 20gb hard drive!!! :thumbdwn:
