Tyre Confusion

Featured Replies

Recently bought an Octavia VRS (mk1) with the 4 original Continental tyres on, now they've traveled close to 48k they're getting a bit tired! The rears should do for another 6 months or so but the drivers front side has been over inflated and is getting within 0.5-1mm of the wear markers.

After venturing into the boot I've just discovered the spare is a Continental of the same spec and has never been used so i was thinking of swapping one over with the spare and buying only 1 new tyre for the front.

The tyres are marked as "ContinentalSportContact" with the specs of 205/50/R/17/89/W. So i need another one of these.

Unfortunately the only Continentals I've been able to find are of a different load index which is 93 (e.g. 205/50/R/17/93/W) opposed to 89.

My question is this, will running 3x89 and 1x93 be an issue? I'm not really knowledgeable on these things hence the question!

The only time it may prove an issue is when running close to the limit of grip, particularly under hard braking. In everyday driving, I doubt there would be a noticeable difference.

Personally, I would prefer to have a matched new pair across the axle, but i am sure it would be OK if you did not.

Hmmm does anyone have some Continental Sport Contact 2? If so do they have Continental Sport Contact 2 on them or just Continental Sport Contact? Reason I ask is that the sport 2's have the same spec.

93 is a higher load index than the 89 so should be ok.
