Obscure HD-DVD bargain for techies

Featured Replies

Well not sure this will be any use for anyone but hey ho...

Gamestation are selling off the Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive for a mere £19.99, or £24.99 with two HD-DVDs

Now i know that HD-DVD is pretty much a dead format, but this means that all the big names (play, HMV etc) are selling off all their HD-DVD titles at around a fiver a pop :D

so if you have an eggbox and a HD telly, or even a PC with vista (the drive is USB) - its almost worth it..

Oh and also the HD-DVD drive comes with a XBOX media remote.. which is worth 15 quid on its own

Shhh. Bought mine for £40 just after they announced it as dead and been buying HD-DVD's since. :D

This is looking tempting to me... do you know if you can use the media remote on windows too?

I already have a reciever that i use with my 360 remote plugged into the pc so i assume that if the remote can be used on the pc it will connect through the reciever?

Also i assume that the remote control included is this one?:

Buy a Microsoft Xbox 360 Universal Media Remote, #B4O-00001 - eXpansys UK

Thanks

Phil

Thats the one Phil.

Not sure about the rest of what you say but it is still a bargain.

Yes. it does essentially have the same buttons on it as the MCE remote does.. except its a different shape and all the buttons light up.. it says in the manual that it will work with windows/MCE

Am i right in thinking that the remote transmits via IR and not through the same bluetooth connection that the xbox controllers use?

If that is the case then i would need to have an MCE IR reciever in order to use the remote on the pc?!

Thanks

Phil

Think I might have to get one of these , despite not owning a 360 yet :)

yes it transmits via IR .The 360's controllers use Microsoft's own wireless connection , only sony are using bluetooth as far as i can remember .MS also wont release the wireless information to 3rd party companies either for some reason lol

lovefilm.co.uk have got all their HD-DVD's for £4.93 with free postage.

I got a HD-DVD drive the other week for £35 and thought that was a fricking steal :D I have it connected to our media pc and not the xbox

I also do the lovefilm bits for my 360 games and HD-DVDs.

I have it connected to our media pc and not the xbox

So guessing you aren't able to use the remote thats included with the drive then?

How well does it work with the pc? Just shows up as a normal drive i guess then windows media centre can just play the HD-DVD's?

Thanks

Phil

I actually bought my standalone HD-DVD player after the format war was over - and I work for the Sony camp

I bought the 360 HD-DVD drive a while ago when it was still in the running but wasn't happy with the quality of it (picture crushed, no high def audio, etc). Therefore, once Blu-Ray came out on top, I went for the Tosh EP30 player at a bargainous £70 with 7 films :D

My HD-DVD collection is now outnumbering my blurays by two to one and growing. All titles at £4.99 from HMV, Play, Lovefilm, etc are too good to miss

I would use it but have a ms media centre remote for use with the media centre side of vista. I tried it on our vista laptop (xbox remote) and worked fine :)

Works great with the PC but you do have to use PowerDVD Ultra or similar (I use 8 with a hacked version that has HD-DVD support. they had dropped it from PDVD8 as BluRay had won.) but the remotes still work with it fine.

i have just ordered 11 HD-DVD's from HMV of which some are 2 disc specials for a grand total of £60.89 :D

Tried to buy one but all sold out :(

I noticed that gamestation are selling them with 3 hd-dvds for £29.99! Bargain!

I still can't figure out if i'll be able to make use of the remote on the pc yet though!!! lol

When you buy the Media Centre Remote for windows it comes with an IR Reciever, if your PC hasn't got one or even if it has it may not work with the microsoft remote.image02.jpg

Reciever is a USB device.

My media centre PC sits next to my 360 so I have to turn it off when using the PC as both devices do the same thing at the same time when I press any buttons on the remote :)

And now a question from me!

How does the drive connect to the 360 and does it need to be powered independently?

The drive connects via USB.

It takes a slot that one of the controllers would sit in but has it's own slots on the back.

Confused me at first as I was trying to plug it in the back.

It will also work in your PC although I have not tried that.

our HD-DVD drive is plugged into the back of the 360  it has a separate power supply

 Me too. I will have another look tonight.

I do have a wireless adaptor plugged in already though.

we had a wireless adapter too, and I think that plugged into the HD-DVD drive (or the other way around) - we deffo didn't have anything plugged into the front though

yup, hd drive has a usb port on it mate so you plug the drive into the xbox then the wireless into the drive :D

even has the clips to attach it and evereything!

I still have my wireless plugged in the back of the 360. I will rectify that later.

I know RTFM. :o

If you go into the options menu of the Xbox there is an option to stop what you are experiencing :) We had the same problem but changing the option (I think its called Remotes and you set it to Xbox360 remote only) and took me a while to figure it out :D
