Loud bang leading to increased vibrations

Hi everyone,

Just wondering whether anyone could shed some light on what I might of just done to my car. I was exiting a junction in a spirited manner (there was wheelspin!), and i heard a big bang come from the car.

Before anyone says it, it was a bit silly of me to do so and i probably deserve the consequences!!:o

I'm not entirely sure where the bang came from but it has meant that vibrations while the car is idling are increased and also when accelerating from low revs in all gears.

I'm pretty sure turbo is fine (it spins up ok and there is no smoke whatsoever). I have checked that driveshafts are fine by jacking the car up. While driving I have checked for any slipping of the clutch (there is none) and checked that the car does stall when the hand brake it on so I think the clutch is fine. Gearbox seems fine and is finding every gear with no problem.

Could I have damaged an engine mount hence leading to increased vibrations becase they are present even when the car is in neutral?

If anyone has any suggestions, would be very happy to hear them. Also I have to drive from Leeds to Southampton tomorrow, do you think it might be a bad idea to do so before I get it checked out?

Also I have to drive from Leeds to Southampton tomorrow, do you think it might be a bad idea to do so before I get it checked out?
I wouldn't go on that length a journey without having the car checked first.

Im going for engine mount. The sypmtoms you describe are similar to ones I encountered after I landed off a "crest".... I had shattered an engine mount. Im assuming it's a Fabia?

I've had bangs and knocks from my Octavia tfsi when setting off fast too.

Don't think it was anything quite as severe as the OP in this thread, but imo the traction control is useless for spirited get aways.

On mine it allows a certain amount of wheelspin before seemingly cutting and re engaging power very quickly. All this seems to do is cause the car to violently shake, bang a bit and pop open the top compartment and glove box.

Now I turn the stupid TC off if I need a quick getaway.

Cheers for the suggestions. Seems like engine mounts or dual mass flywheel are the popular choice.

What are the implications of driving the car with damage to the DMF? I think I might get the AA out to just have a check of the car before I drive back home to Southampton.

As for the TC, yeah its rubbish and I did have it off when the loud bang occured!

I'd agree with that if the car has one as I got a loud bang from one of mine before it gave up working properly :(

A damaged DMF can cause problems with take off and in the end will cause gearbox/clutch wear. Apparently it can also seize up and there is a possibility that they can in rare cases even catch fire.

Well, those who guessed engine mount are the winners!!! I called out the AA and the took the guy for a drive and after a good look around underneath he found that one of the bolts on the engine/gearbox mount had been ripped out!! :eek:

The remaining bolt was just about holding on. It turns out that one of the bolts was loose and was hanging on by only a few threads. The AA guy was actually really good and managed to clean up the few damaged threads and with spare bolts attach the mounting bracket. Car was back to normal immediately. :)

Well that was the good news.... now for the bad, on my drive back south I noticed that the water temp started to stray from the usual 90 deg. At one point it went up to 110 deg (120 is where it goes into the red)!!:eek: I noticed the fan didn't seem to be working so I thought it was a fuse but the fuse was fine. I decided to keep driving until a warning light came on and then I would stop and have to call the AA again!:mad: Well, the light never came on but when I got home the fan was working in its high speed mode.

So from this I knew the thermostat was working and the fuse for the fan was fine. I took it to Jim at SJB in Basingstoke and it turns out the control unit for the fan was not turning the fan on at its slower speed mode. Basically meant a new control unit. All in all, I had a pretty unlucky drive up north!!

Pretty lucky I'd say that nothing broke in an expensive way. Got it all out of the way in one go hopefully.
