LPG dilemma...

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Because of the recent rise in fuel costs im thinking of going down the LPG route on my Mk2 vRS TFSi. I can get a well installed job done for £1850, I use the car for business and can clock up 1k miles per week, I can get away with not informing my employer im running on LPG so could still claim petrol rates (naughty I know) of 15p per mile so im not overly worried about covering my costs but im concerend about how the car will perform etc, especially as I have a Superchips Bluefin installed.

Will LPG defeat the point of having the Bluefin, maybe I should give Superchips a call and discuss with them?

What do you all reckon?

LPG has less bang for buck, but still represents a saving at the moment.

Did the guys quoting the LPG installation know this is a direct injection engine?

With a compression ratio as big as a chipped TFSI I wouldn't try anything else than top octane petrol.

Side-question: Wonder when something like E85 will be available in Europe.

I would be wary of it on a newer direct injection engine and also your employeer. If they found out would that be a problem for you and your job?

LPG may not be as cheap as it is for much longer and there is speculation about potential increases in tax to the same levels as normal fuels.

Would it not be cheaper to chop it in for a vRS TDI in the long run?

Even if you could manage to deliver LPG into the fuel chamber in a (T)FSI, it would knock beyond anything the engine can manage because of the high compression rate this engine sports.

In order to make it work you would need a detuned mapping to bring it to lower compression ratios => less power => might as well use 91 octane if you can get any => no expensive conversion. The downside is you would only get about 140-150 bhp out of the engine. Then why not get the diesel?

Your employer would easily tell by the LPG filler cap. You would be sacked for defrauding the company AKA gross misconduct.

Also, you cant have LPG in an FSI engine. Doenst it cause mega damage?

Not to mention the fact that your employer may well be curious should any warranty claims on the car be voided and suddenly your without vehicle.

I have to agree, i'm not at all convinced you can convert a TFSI to LPG, so far as i am aware my German colleagues have not.........I would check.

Thanks all for the info.

Going on what you have said (plus the fact I need to travel 15 miles to my nearest LPG filling station!) I will knock the idea on the head.

Im surprised that the garage that quoted me didnt know this, they had the info required?

Just a side note based on some of the comments, this is my own car - not a company owned vehicle and I claim my business mileage back hence the idea of lowering my fuel costs and maximising my allowance.

But very well done for listening to all the Briskodians - this exchange has answered my questions as well.
