Mis-fuel + service cost?

Featured Replies

Woman who works behind bar at local club saying today how her 'Friday 13th' lived

up to its name yesterday. She filled up her Golf Tdi (2002/3 130bhp), unwittingly she

filled up with petrol:eek:

To make matters worse, she drove off too, and predictably broke down.

Now she contacted a local garage, who had her picked up.

They 'rectified' the mis-fuel, and carried out a 40k service (was nearly due) for

about £380. This sounds a bit cheap to me? anyone else or am I overly cynical?

Cheaper than I thought then, daily mail (on a no news day) ran an article

about dealership costs for mis-fueling recently. Ford focus at a ford dealership

was something like £1000-1500! outrageous.

thing is if you mix petrol into a diesel or vise versa.

If it gets in the engine, It messes up the interals!

So if you do drive it far then, its not just a new tank, filter etc, but new engine components!

Bit of an incentive to think about what one to use before filling.

Mercedes dealers will insist that all the fuel system is renewed

whereas the Ford dealership i worked for would just charge 2-2.5 hours to drain the tank and fit a new fuel filter

A friend went to buy a car at auction and came across a Honda Accord 2.2 CRDi with an invoice in the service history for £1,500 + VAT due to mis-fuelling (he didn't buy).

£380 including a service? - cheap as chips.

She didn't fill up a Morrisons did she?

I read in the paper today that they had a pump giving out the wrong fuel and customers were advised to get in touch.

Funny you should say that, but yes. She was aware of the incident, asked recovery

guy to go back via forecourt, but it was her own fault.

Apparently she is (nearly) always vigilant, but had become impatient with person

filling before her, fannying around etc before leaving pump, in her rage she

grabbed the big green nozzle:rolleyes:

I was in Lonodn this week and my wife filled mine to the brim with unleaded from empty, the night before she had a fire in her school and she had our 15 month old with her who was past his bed time,

Needless to say she was stressed and did the same, luckily as it was full of the wrong fuel it only made it 50 meters before just stoppping, on a roundabout of course! towed to my village mechanic who drained it and refuelled it with 20 euro of diesel and did a oil change and filters for ...................... 220 Euro! yay ! it goes much better now by the way but turns over a few times when the engine is hot. I may have to replace the glow plugs I think.

It makes a difference if Common Rail or Pump Injector. Common Rail pumps are lubricated by the diesel so misfuelling with petrol will in effect 'degrease' the bearings - not good. Pump Injectors are lubricated by engine oil.
