Fun fitting my LG head unit

Featured Replies

Still relatively new to the Octavia, but really enjoying it. I fitted my LG head unit at the garage, and it ended up sticking out by about 1 - 2 cm's, and we decided that the phono plugs were causing the problem.

The phono's are on the left of the unit as you look at it in the dash, with the aerial right next to it, and the main connector is on the right - about 2 cm's in.

I decided to order some phono adapters (turn the plugs at 90 degrees) to solve the problem. I got them today and spent an hour and a half fiddling around with it, even tried putting the head unit where the tray is and moving the tray to the top. Still no luck. If I swap them over, and have the head unit at the bottom, the main connector gets in the way.

I wondered if anyone had any suggestions?

If I remember rightly the HU fits into a plastic cage, can any of that be cut out?

I had a similar problem with an old Kenwood HU that I had and I had to cut out a small amount of the rear cage to get he RCA cables through to get the HU back far enough.

with mine in the top i had that problem but the RCA's where the cause, are you not able to squeeze the cables down a bit?

If you haven't already done it, remove the glovebox (4 or 5 Torx screws) then have a look at the rear of the dashboard, just in front of the heater ducts - you should see a plastic moulding where the rear of the factory fit HU fits in, presumably to provide additional support. Using a hacksaw blade (and being careful), cut that plastic bracket off and the new HU will slot straight in. You wil also be able to route the cables to the side easier and then refit the glovebox.

Whilst it won't solve your specific problem, taking out the glove box gives you a bit more cable tugging room whilst you fit it. There is also a small space to the right of the glove box where you can stash excess cable but again you need to drop the glovebox to be able to access it.

EDIT- Doh, poster above read my mind ;)

I had this problem with my Alpine. Spent hours farting about trying to get it to fit with all the wires at the back!

My sloution was to remove the glovebox, to gain more access to the back of the head unit. Once I saw what was going on (standard cables were on the left, but new unit socket was on the right) I fiddled about and re-routed the head unit cables to the right, by poking them around and under the plastic bits at the back of the slot. Once I had everything to the right, and made sure there was room for the cables to move back into when I slid it in, it went straight in no problem. A bit of cable 'shaping' had to be done to make sure the bunch of cables folded up in the right way to allow it to fit.

HU slid all the way in and made a satisfying 'click'! Give it a try mate and see how you get on.

Getting the glovebox off is stupidly simple, it's just held on with a handful of easily accessable screws, then slides out.

just do what i did when i bought a tv/dvd/microwave/headunit from china

that was supposed to be single din, yep the back was, the face was 1 inch bigger all round

so i hacked all my dashboard to bits to fit it in nicely which it did, only problem was when i put my sony headunit in there was no where for it to attach

so i selotaped/cabletied it to the cubby hole under the stereo worked a treat:thumbup:

anybody fancy buying my car forget i mentioned it

Cheers for the posts everyone. This one seems like a real pain in the a*** as I have had the glove box out too, and done what most of you have recommended, except start hacking the dash up - which I might have to do! I will keep you all posted.

TBH, cutting the plastic bracket behind the HU with a hacksaw blade only takes about 10 to 15 minutes. Just make sure all cables are out of the way first and then take your time. Yes, it is a bit awkward and your hands will ache for a bit afterwards, but you only have to do it the once so even if you only keep the car for one year what's less than 30 minutes when compared to having a decent HU correctly fitted for a whole year?

Do it, you know it makes sense.
