2.0l TDI 80,000 miles any problems?

Featured Replies

I'm thinking of trading my 1.6 VW Bora for a 55 plate VW Passat TDI Sport.

The only thing is it has 80,000 miles on the clock.

Is there anything that I should look at on the VAG 2 litre 140 Tdi with this sort of mileage?

I'm not overly concerned that it's higher than average but I think as long as it's has a full VW service history and cambelt and the likes are changed on time then everything should be fine.

I'm guess things like bushes and suspension would need the usual checks but not sure if there are any kind of usual suspects type of things that go wrong with this engine.

Cheers in advance.

80k is the Cambelt interval so it may be required.

Also look out for joyous DMF issues and wheel bearings.

The cambelt should be done at 80k , so check this and haggle the price if it hasn't been swapped.

Turbos seem to be a very common problem on these engines , but it seems that they can fail at any mileage - some as low as 10k!

Check to see if it's ever been replaced. If you are really lucky it will have failed recently and will have a nearly new one on there

Thanks for all the feedback.

Not all the 140bhp TDI Passats ahve DPFs fitted so would need to checkwith the seller.

Seems that it's the turbo that's the achillies heel but unless it has a reciept for a new one then there won't be much in the way of clues on the test drive (maybe a little more noise) that it could go anytime.

Are the new units being fitted different in design or are they just manufactured by a different company using better materials?

The problem I'm having so far is my trade in as there are a few cars similar in spec with slightly lower mileages but are 200-300 miles away and they state that they will only provide a trade-in value on seeing the car which doesn't include photos by e-mail.

Vw dealers seem to be about £2k-£3k more expensive for the same car. The warranty is obviously worth a fair amount but surely not that much.

Just to clarify when i wrote DMF i meant the dual mass flywheel and not the DPF. Most of the PD140 Mk II's of that age don't have a DPF either.

A warranty from warranty direct can be had for about £300 for a year (luxury cover) and they often give 1 month free.

Sorry I read DPF.

I guess if the DMF goes then that's a new clutch as well?

Think I'll wait for a lower mileage car to come along as it seems pointless to trade a car in with lower mileage than the one you're buying whilst spending another £7k.

There's nothing wrong with my Bora so I'm in no real rush to buy something that isn't exactly what I want. I only taxed it last month and the MOT, service and insurance aren't due til the end of November.

It's just when you get given the green light from the other half to change a car the child inside wants to do it now.

It depends how badly the DMF goes, if it's just starting to get weak you're ok, if it goes properly then it's probably a new clutch.

FWIW I don't think mileage is the issue with these, as I've now had IIRC 6 in under half the mileage you stated. What I would say is find out a cost for a new clutch and flywheel and factor a portion of that into the price of the car.

Big cars are not selling well at the moment so at 80k you could get a great price on it.

Keep the Bora:thumbup:

Keep the Bora:thumbup:

The problem with the Bora is it's on an X plate and getting to the point where we might need to spend money on it.

We're also looking to get something a little bigger for more space inside. I want a diesel as well, I know petrol is cheaper but I'm a diesel fan at heart.

With having a 3 year old daughter we want a car as safe as possible and even with the Bora being 4* ENCAP the car we would be replacing it with would be 5*.

The search will no doubt continue.

Nope the Octy II is only 4*.

It's a Passat I'm getting which is a 5* for passengers and 4* for pedestrians.

I knew that and was just testing, honest ;)

I've yet to see a 140 PD with a DPF, certainly not fitted on the Passat.

It was an optional extra and I've seen a few in the for sale ads mentioning them having DPFs.

I wonder if they have the same problems that Skoda are experiencing.

After hearing so many horror stories I'd rather it didn't have one but it's the leather interior that would make me buy the right car maybe in a colour that isn't my first choice.

I've worked on them for 18 months and never seen one. Not even sure how they would work, cant be the same set up as the 170PD as that has to use a different turbo, management sensors etc etc.

There is one for sale at the moment on Autotrader around £10k 140bhp TDI Sport with DPF.

Unless the seller has made a mistake but it seems like a strange thing to get wrong.

Autotrader often have all sorts of errors, check out the ammount of MK4 110bhp TDi Ibizas (never made them).

However just because I havent seen one doesnt mean they dont exsist. I would ask a salesman, but they know less than I do.

I'm sure it's listed in the brochure somewhere, the 1.9 pd 105 was definitely offered with it as an extra.

It would mean lower emissions and lower road fund liscence fee but with the amount of town driving we do i can invisage problems.

I wonder if its similar to the retrofit kit you can get?

I remember seeing a passat catalogue where they offered the DPF, but it was an at cost option so I'd say the number of people buying them would be very closed to zero.
