Allard Power Pipe + CEL + Vag com

Featured Replies

I am aware the power pipe pulls up a CEL light.

However, I have a copy of VAG COM, and if the fault is disabled, will it go away for a while or does it come back every start up?

it will come back

needs to be mapped out

It sure does pop back. If you make it 10 miles after clearing the fault, you'll be lucky. :D

All being well, my next mapping session will result in me having mine mapped out too.

I suggested this Allard EGR pipe to my local tuner yesterday and he said why don't you just switch it off. So he did, by mapping it out. So the Valves still inplace but never opens....

So why the need for the Allard pipe beings as you can do this out of interest? As far as I can tell I get the benefit of it not being there without spending £62.

If you do a search on here - you'll find some pics of a typical EGR valve after light use...

Black goo decreases the center by over 60%, sticking to the flap and sides.

A straight pipe has no flap cutting down airflow and catching oily goo and makes lot more sense, especially combined with both the EGR bypass and elephant hose mods.....

It's not actually "off" though. ;)

All you can do with vagcom is turn it down to it's minimum setting which means there is still some recirc going on. Only true way is to blank it off, fit the racepipe, and then map the EGR out at the mapping stage. :)

Oh I see, but now mines switched off as long as I clean it to remove the deposits it shouldn't get goo'd up again should it? Im aware however that the flap is still in the airflow but I can't see that making much difference does it?

Im just trying to justify to myself that now its closed, am I really going to see the extra benefits of spending £62 to remove the flap out of the airflow...

Is it defo never closed? My mapper showed me that at full throttle it was closed (as standard) so he set all RPM levels to this figure so that it would never open....

ps: he didn't use VAGCOM to switch it off...

Sorry for the post hi-jack guys. Just curious

Dunno. :D I just don't trust the EGR - and anything I don't trust in/on my car is not in/on my car for very long. ;)

Take it off for lightness?? lol.

Take it off for lightness?? lol.

in all seriousness, it does save a fair old amount of grammage. Your losing the whole valve affair, and the EGR pipe from the exhaust manifold - and replacing it with just a bit of ally pipe.

in all seriousness...

I was kinda being serious.

I took my engine cover off to save weight, and to keep the air flow round the engine bay to the max.

Good eh??

Dave

Took mine off because it wouldn't fit back on! Intercooler piping stops it, so I got rid, and unbolted all the fittings off the engine that it used to attach to. :D

My CEL has just popped up lol

thought it wasn't going to, took 200 miles for it to pop on :(

200 miles for the ECU to realise there is somthing wrong!!

Makes you think about what else could go wrong before the ECU realises!!

Just to report, i've being running the car for nearly a week now with the EGR valve switched off (No blanking plate) and wow! For the Fuel Economy alone I suggest anyone who can get to a Mapper who can switch it off in the software does. Even if you don't have the Allard pipe. Everyday this week on my same 56 miles each way drive to work I have achieved between 3-6mpg more by the end of my Journey driving exactly the same as I do every week. (High 50's MPG instead of low 50's).

May not sound a lot but with the milage I do im already noticeing the difference! Not bad considering it was free

I've had my allard pipe on for a week,

Not noticed anything different apart from a CEL lol!!

and it switches off as a stall.

Will obviously be helping the engine though

I've noticed ive got a flat spot though from 80 - 85 (cough) in 4th? Maybe a bad map?

5th and 6th are alright at this speed just 4th struggles then picks up again?

Just finished my first full tank since switching it off and i've travelled 80miles further than I have ever got before. Not bad considering the temperature outside. So im very happy.

Sounds like you need it plugging into VagCom mate, just to check for further error codes?

Hesitation was there before i fitted the Power Pipe.

Seems to be worst when i've been giving it the beans :thumbdwn:

Bloody car :(

Silly question here guys but if you blank off the EGR will the intercooler pipes still have oil getting into them or will they be cleaner?

No - the EGR is what makes the inlet manifold clog up as that's where it goes back into the system. The oil in the intercooler is the CCV thing, which you can also block/reroute.

Ahh i see.Maybe Basils "elephant mod" might be useful here.
