Road Noise - Skoda Petition?

Featured Replies

Hi again :)

Many many Octavia owners have reported bad road noise and I haven't noticed any solution in the forums.

Some tyres are better than others, camber settings have an effect etc but no final solution in the way of " Yeah, did this or that and now the car is like most others, not like an Airbus on touchdown any longer"

Is it time that -perhaps if Briskoda could provide us with a voting button, we should create a petition and fire it off to magazines and Skoda to see Skoda actually fixing what is a problem?

Just a thought...

Just learn to live with it, try different tyres, or get a different car.

That's my advice.

I'm guessing the factory fit Bridgestone ER30 is probably the main problem. It's a problem with Vectras and Astras fitted with the ER30 too.

Bridgestones caused the same problem on a Mazda 6 and an Octavia II that I had previously. My present Octavia has Michelins and there's no problem.

Yep the ER30 is noisy as hell for me too.

I did the boot and spare wheel well with dynamat xtreme and it's much quieter back there.

Haven,t really noticed much road noise with mine but don,t know what tyres i got on i have never looked.

Dunlop here (SP1) even bigger problem.

Bridgestobe ER30's were very noisy. Changed for Pirelli P6000's which were worse.

It became so off putting that it put me off the idea of buying another Octy altogether!!

If you try Falken f452 you'd fall in love with your car again

I'm now on Michelins which are 100% better

Michelin Pilot Primacy's here, and they're only noisy on especially bad roads.

Mine (4x4 16") was delivered with Bridgestone Turanza 300 which, according to the nordic tests, should be the very best overall. However I experience a lot of noise on all but the smoothest tarmac. Is this a fault with the tyres or the car?

Just got to learn to live with it IMHO particularly with low profile tyres!

Worth remembering that road noise will increase as tyres wear due to less (noise absorbing) rubber.

From experience on my Octy, Michelin Pilot Exalto 2s are 'middle of the road' for road noise but getting noisy recently as front tyres are down to about 4mm tread. Vredestein Ultrac Sessantas are noisier BUT they are better for wet and cold grip/handling so I'm prepared to live with it. :D

Go drive an old Clio.

Octy isn't that bad.

got a pair of them on the front still not any noticeable difference. Also i am sure skoda wont take much notice by saying if you want a quiet car go buy an audi or something.

I don't particularly think its all down to the tyre choice, you'll probably find that Skoda put less sound insulation in the cars compared to other VAG group cars. If you consider the quality of the interior trim and fit and finish in the cars themselves, they have to cut costs somewhere else to sell them cheaper than the equivalent VW, Audi or Seat.

As cheezemonkhai said, he's put extra sound deadening in his and it's made a difference.

It's very much down to tyre choice IMHO. The work Octavias run 3 different tyres - factory fit ER30, factory fit Dunlops, and the tyre the workshops fit are Goodyear Excellence. The Goodyears are remarkably quieter, considering all the Octis are the same spec you can tell which tyres you're running within half a mile up the road without looking.

Too late- suppose that would have been cheaper than changing the car (see sig.):eek:

I haven´t change to Falken yet, it'll be on the end of this summer, but one friend of mine with 6 months old Octy has just done it. He's got rid of Bridgestone and got Falken. My god, what a difference. Feels like completely different car.

Hum, now I see that the Bridgestones delivered with my car are made in France, while the ones that got top score here were produced in Poland - could that make a difference?

Goodyear eagle F1 are much quieter....and a far better tyre

Having travelled along the M4 today and whilst I appreciate not tires are the same when it comes to ride and noise, it dose in fact come down to the road surface.

We had the usual tire roar to the point where the radio has to be turned and then we came to a long section between Bath and the M32 where the same tires hardly gave off any sound. My tires are by the way Falken.

The A36 now has several sections of the road where the Octavia runs almost silently yet on other sections you can hardly here your own thoughts due to the tire roar.

It is our crappy roads folks and the Treasury who collects our fuel and road taxes not to spend on our roads, but as general revenue so they can pretend they keep income taxes low for your benefit.

I've had all my OEM Dunlops replaced as they were "sawtoothing" i.e. the leading edge of the tread block was slightly higher than the trailing edge. My road noise problem has gone!

roads are being replaced with cheaper substances sometimes mixed with pulp from recycled paper (like the m6 toll road) these days they care more about the longitivity of the road than the noise it makes.

My noisy Eagle F1-Asymmetrics are doing that too. :(
