not my day

Featured Replies

Just got the clutch changed and the gears now seem to work perfectly:)

Got home looked at the front light and noticed that the glass is cracked:(

I am now looking to spend even more money, can you get just the glass or is it a complete unit? secondly is it actually a legal requirement to have intact glass or can i leave it a while? being as it is summer and not using the lights much.

Depending on size of crack. But it is an MOT failure if it is in the beam pattern IIRC.

basically from left to right across most of the unit, i thought the light pattern looked odd the other day but never thought to have a look until today.

more money to spend:-(

is there a hole through the glass, or just a crack?

not 100% sure, but I think a crack does not render the lights illegal. I know that for coloured lights when they are in operation there must be no white light.

However if there is a hole through the glass that might let water in, which will cause condensation and reduce the quality of the beam of light, plus overtime might cause the reflectors to become knackered.

Should pick one up pretty cheap on ebay or salvage jobby

Invest in some headlight covers too

On a previous car I had a small hole in the lamp lens which I filled with Araldite and then rubbed down. I first noticed the hole when the glass showed condensation on the inside. I did this as a temporary repair but it had lasted about 3 years when I sold the car and was still almost invisible.

I had dried the lamp housing out first with a hair drier through the bulb hole and then left the car in the sun for a few hours.

You should be able to fix your crack in the same way.

I don't see the legality is any different to the windscreen repair made by ***oglass as seen in recent t.v. adverts

i don't think a repair is possible looking closely, big crack, bits of glass missing from the edge of the crack. Can't remember hitting anything? which with the amount of damage i would have thought i might remember.

My 2003 LHD (of Belgian origin) has plastic headlights which is a fantastic idea. Why they all don't have these is a mystery, another opportunity to rip off the UK motorist perhaps :(

For repairs to glass headlights I have for years had a roll of Crystal Tape which is like Sellotape but much much tougher and also UV resistant etc. so lasts for ever, ideal for the job.

The later mk1 Octavias (2000 onwards) do indeed have plastic lights, however upto about 2000 they were all glass.
