ADSL error question

Featured Replies

Hello again...,

Can anyone explain the figures attached, partifularly the very high number of "RS Correctable Errors" downstream? The SnR looks OK to me and the modem has no trouble syncing with the exchange, but the connection can be very slow (10kbits downloads at times!)

The modem is connected through a known-good microfilter to a line which has no other equipment connected. Sometimes the speed is really bad (as above), sometimes it is adequate.

BT, of course, say there is no problem.

Anyone?

This might give you some pointers. Seems like there are 101 different factors that can affect noise levels on the line...

Hmm. It doesn't seem to be a noise problem, exactly, just the very high reading for RS Correctable Errors (which I think is what BT call FEC). The router is plugged directly into the master socket with no other extensions so I don't really know what else to do!

There was a bit in that thread talking about sync speed also, although I don't know enough to say how you can alter that...

Looking at those stats, everything looks fine. whats the contention ratio on the line? Perhaps your ISP is oversubscribed in your local telephone exchange?

When downloading nothing, do a traceroute (or tracert in a Command prompt) to 4.2.2.2 (a nice easy DNS server in Germany) and check the response time to the first hop.

Alternatively it could be elsewhere upstream in the ISP or Internet.

Do you have a Wireless system? Its possible that someone has hacked it and is availing of your bandwidth and therefore slowing you down?

I hope that you're not looking at bit torrent download speeds for testing? These are not accurate at all.
