F1 Moving to Donington

Featured Replies

Sorry, the 300k figure was for the entire weekend. Still stand by the fact donnington couldnt cope with those numbers.

It copes with them at the MotoGP , Just!

It's quite possible for them to do the upgrades needed to the facilities - it's not like it's somewhere like Oulton Park or Thruxton that doesn't have any room to grow

I think bernie knows they cant get **** done in time so will just move the british GP to abu dabi or somin

Donnington is a bit of a ****e hole, went there last year for the superbikes. Facilties were dreadfull. Wont be going again.

I have however since been to Oulton Park and it bet Donnington hands down facility wise

Dr Z, checked after hearing on the news today, Silverstone has 60,000 stand + 90k general admissions. Donny (currently - not likely to change) has 90k cap limit.

The news bulletin also discussed Donny having to close for the majority of 2009 simply to do the track and safety upgrades.

Was at a clients site, I think it was Sky news on the TV???? Couldnt see from where I was working.

Silverstone has 60k seats and 30k in standing area, they can only get a license to hold 90 on any given day least thats what they where sayingon saturday i say they but i mean Damon Hill.

Donnie has 2 seats and 89998 standing area capacity.

Its all null and void anyhow as per useal bernie profits, Donnie cant get it finished then they have to pay bernie 28 mil in compo and bernie then sells that GP to the highest bidder in the middle east.

Well call me brave or stupid, but I've started a fight back- Save Silverstone F1 British Grand Prix

Feel free to whore out the link for support, or for others to watch and laugh from the sidelines. :o

OTOH the MD of Donnington thinks they can do the track work in the off-season, and that consists of a half-mile extension into the infield around Goddards, and maybe straightening Foggy's, both of which actually improve the circuit.

And the alternative is another who knows how long at a flat c@rp airfield circuit!

Ah , so that's where they want to extend it....

Yep , that makes sense

Source Autosport this week, and the result looks like Melbourne hairpin, 3/4 mile straight to "New Hairpin" (it's a good enough name, isn't it, esp given "Old Hairpin"?), and slightly longer straight back over current start line to Redgate. New pits complex on infield roughly across the track from the exhibition centre. Also some discussion of moving the Donnington Collection, but I wasn't clear on where to.

What it will not do is make the track into another Tilkedrome, but it will address all the bits around the Melbourne Loop that get complaints.

This could get messy. I can see law suits from the track owners and Gillette when this goes norks up. He's carved up the land and it appears for nothing. The new layout isnt worth anything to other sports.

Maybe even legal action against bernie for even entertaining the idea and pushing them when doomed to fail?

Wouldn't it be nice to have an all new, purpose built track for F1 rather than keep trying to butcher the old crap we currently have on offer? Chances of that happening are a tad slim though.

Its embarrassing when you consider how many of the F1 teams are actually based in the UK to start with.

i just wish they hurry up and tell us where its going to be held and get the tickets up for sale, as the longer they leave it the more of rush there will be for tickets, and after this exciting season i definately want to go next year, where ever it is.

Take it you've never tried getting in or out of an event at donnington....

It's ok if you are on a bike , and then when everyone gets to the A42 and nails it.....:D

The bonds have been withdrawn.

This *could* mean they've been sold. If they havent, then Mr Gillett could be facing some bills and legal issues for carving the track up.

That sucks :thumbdwn:

One look at Yas Marinas makes any current British offering an utter joke.

It's not as if the British GP doesn't pull in the punters is it :rotz:

Yes, but all these circuits started with a blank canvass. Existing circuits usually still have racing going on, so doing improvements isnt as easy.

Silverstone have plans, approved, to build new pits along Abbey before the complex but cant do that AND pay Bernies high prices.

All these circuits that do, almost always end up deeply out of pocket. Hence why established circuits are dropping like flies.

How much do Silverstone or Donnington need to redevelop?

If all members of the car forums chip in £1 each would that cover it :P

So - do we think they've met the latest so-called 'deadline'? :rubchin:

Supposed to have been midnight. Just can't see Donnington honestly being able to properly support a decent British F1 event. RenaultSport even decamped to Silverstone for the free World Series annual weekend because it got too big for place! How the hell can F1 stand a chance??

Steve

Personally I think it's more of a Zombieline than a deadline as it just wont die.

I just wish they would either sort their fecking act out, or get silverstone going for it.

I'd very much like to see it at an improved donnington, but it doesn't look good.

Neither are looking particularly hot at present, as Silverstone needs work doing as well TBH - especially when you compare it with other world circuits and especially the new Middle Eastern setups. Looks a bit crap in comparison, even if it does have heritage and history in spades!
