Does my gearbox need oil?

Featured Replies

Hi guys, some help needed here as im a bit worried about it:(

I got in my car one day last week coz i had to go into oxford and noticed something was not right with the gearbox, first of all it crunched into 3rd but got in,then as i gained speed up the bypass i went from 4th to 5th. 4th went in fine but could not get it into 5th without it crunching in.

On the way back it did the same only i coulldnt get 5th at all :(

I took it out today about an hour ago, same thing happened (i was on my way to skoda),i got there and the mechanic wasnt in today so the other guy i was speaking to was ummin and arrin, giving me all these things that could be wrong, was also suggesting that i was mistreating it which i havnt and said to him that i only use the car on weekends if that sometimes,i take my kids in the car with me most of the time so im not going to rag it, He was also keen to point out that it probably wont be covered on the warranty unless its genuine wear or tear or something has broken.

After that visit i took my kids to the park then on the way home i couldnt engage 1st or 3rd or 5th,only 2nd and 4th!

The gears do seem very notchy at the moment and when i got home i barely managed to engage reverse to park it.

I hope someone can help, its booked in with skoda next saturday for the technician to try and diagnose the problem but im not sure if the car will make it there.

If it is oil,and i hope it is because my pockets arent very deep, how do you check the oil.

I hope someone can shed some light on this because im really worried about it

Thanks guys

Doesn,t really sound oil related to me more like clutch related.

For it not selecting gaer it could be the slave cyl or the clutch itself ! the only way to find out is get the box out .

If its the clutch then what could be the problem

As above says maybe Slave cyl or clutch itself. You won,t really know until you take gearbox out.

Saying that when the clutch is fully depressed theres a slight grind, nothing too bad but definitely noticeable

sounds like a clutch/ release bearing problem, does the clutch feel normal?

  • Author

It does yeah, just when you push clutch right in theres a little grind

Release bearing maybe?

i think the clutch has gone myself.

Well its going in next saturday ,i just hope its covered whatever's wrong ...gulp...

cheers guys youve made me edge towards it being a clutch fault which i actually think it is now coz the cars only done 46k,it makes me think the gearbox cant be on its way out already

i destroyed a brand new gearbox in only 20-25k :)

how did you do that!!!!!!!!!

simply by my loving, careful driving style and genereal attitude towards my car :)

If the clutch has gone is wont be covered by warranty, its a wear and tear item.

If its a slave cylinder or mater cylinder issue the box wont have to come out.

I hope the box wont have to come out,i can afford to get clutch repaired if thats the case,my cars booked in with skoda next saturday so il reopen this thread then and let you know what happened

Thanx for your time fellas!

the box has to come out to do a clutch, believe me on this :(

Hi K04,

I wish you the very best of luck for your problem, but would it not be cheaper for having the problem diagnosed at Skoda, and then having the fix made at a local good back street garage?

Would this save you money here?

Oh yeah we love it when people do that. And people wonder why we dont do free diagnosis..lol.

And Bengie deffo knows whats involved, he helped me do one on his mates driveway this weekend.

TBH, you're not that far from Ross (unless my brain has it all wrong), maybe you should drop him a PM ;)

shall i give them the response you very nearly gave arron when he asked if you'd come back?

I'd be buggered if I'm doing another box on my back again. got another clutch on this weekend but i'm doing on my ramp at work.

Car went in today

They took it for a test drive ,came back and said its definitely the gearbox thats gone wrong, saying that they need to take it apart to see whats wrong.

Because iv got the Carbonio on there i had to convince them that the cars not been 'chipped' because of warranty issues but in the end said it was fine and 'should' be covered.

Its being looked at next week between wednesday and friday ,fingers crossed!

They've given me a courtesy car, well two actually ,the blue one,a 1.4, they gave me first,it had a full tank of diesel, great i thought ,then 2 hours went by and i got a phone call saying they gave me the wrong car that it was a demo,'can we swap it'

They brought another one to me,a 1.9 estate which was running on fumes ,basically no fuel

Cheers Skoda!

I will keep everyone posted what happens in the coming week just in case someone might be experiencing the same with their car

Andy

Great stuff - always nice to hear a happy ending.....

Good luck!
