Octavia 1.4

Featured Replies

Hi,

i like the Skoda Octavia very much and iam ready to buy it, but because my money are enough only for the Octavia 1.4 ambiente

i wonder if a car heavy as this(only 78 hps?) will perform well on the national highway for example with 3 adults and luggage.I dont expect to run like a race car but good for a pleasant trip with an acceptable speed.

Any owners opinion of this model would help me very much

in my decision.

Many thanks in advance.

Can't help you with the 1.4 i'm afraid.

I did however test drive a 1.6 Ambient (Auto) - special order gone wrong apparently but that's another story. My mother in law is thinking of buying this motor and as I already have an Octavia wanted my opinion on it.

To be honest it felt pretty quick on acceleration and at 80mph cruised along in a manner not disimilar to my vRS, all in all for a 1.6 I was pretty impressed !

Looking at the brochure figures, 0-62 in 15.3 seconds and a 106 mph top speed are a bit pedestrian. The 1.6 - with 102bhp versus 75bhp - does 0-62 in 11.8 seconds and has a top speed of 118mph. I assume you are buying a new car since, if secondhand, you could surely afford a 1.6 by buying a slightly older car?

The Octavia has a remarkably good chassis and ride, and the fun to be got driving it increases with engine power - as owners of the vRS and chipped Octavias will tell you! :D

But if a 1.4 is all you can afford, go for it. :)

I had a 1.4 Octy as a loan car when my car was in for servicing (previous SLX TDi).

Used it to take a load of stuff down to the local dump.

Obviously the "pull" wasn't what I was used to but it could be hustled along but........you did have to give it some revs.

A bit spartan inside but again not to what I was used to in my own car (Comfort vs. SLX/Elegance) but was solid as I had come to expect.

In addition to Denis' suggestion how about a Fabia estate; if ultimate space not that important you may get more "bang" for your buck.

Happy hunting!:)

Cheers.

Adrian.

I had a 1.4 BX once, whilst not the Octy 1.4 as a similar sized vehicle it was fine, fully loaded at the weekend coming back from the pub etc....never set any land speed records but at the end of the day it was not built for that or brought for that. In reality I wish I was back in that car, would certainly make motoring less stressfull...

I'm curious about the 1.4 too - not looking to buy one, just wondering how

it would cope!

The 1.6 is a fantastic engine - I've got the Ambiente trim, which is nice if

you like air con and a CD changer :D

It pulls well round town, and is very responsive at motorway speeds.

The only time I find it really struggles is with 5 adults in it on A-roads

with lots of roundabouts - getting the speed up after each roundabout

requires a fair bit of effort...

The best way to tell how good the 1.4 is - test drive it! ;)

Hope this helps,

Rob.

I want octavia because i like the shape very much and also has alot of space, important because i want it as a family car.

In the national road wth 120-130 km/h with normal load will be an easy ride?Or the engine will start making noise trying to compete?

Many thanks

There isn't a 1.4 Ambient is there?

There's a 1.4 Classic.

I assume that the 1.4 in the Octavia is the same as the 1.4 in the Golf ie 75 bhp, 16v etc etc? If it is then it's a lovely engine. Strong, reliable and revs freely. Really comes into its own around 10-15k miles. My last two Golfs had this engine and I always got excellent fuel consumption with more than adequate performance around town and on the motorway. The Octavia has got to be a heavier car than the Golf though. Take a test drive and see what you think. Not wanting to upset Rob but if the 1.6 is the 8v VAG engine there is not much between the two.

:cussing:

You're probably right - well, I drove both the 2.0 and 1.6, and

to be honest I didn't find much between them except the

1.6 would be cheaper to insure. ;)

The 1.4 probably isn't all that different, but I've never seen

one on the road or advertised second-hand. Would've

test driven one though...

In which country are you thinking of buying the 1.4?

I considered a 1.4 Octavia. I test drove a diesel version just to get an idea of leg room (which was great) , but in the end I felt that I was really paying for a huge boot that I wouldn't need. I ended up with a Fabia saloon (which has a far bigger boot than the hatch).
