Trip Computer reading greater than overall mileage... How???

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Firstly, would just like to say what a great site this is. It should take most of the credit for my decision to buy a new Furby vRS, which I picked up on Saturday and which I am very pleased with...

However, one thing is bugging me... Yesterday, I was playing with the trip computer, and flicked it over to the '2' setting, which I believe lists the entire time the car has been run (as long as it hasn't been reset...).

I flicked it down to the mileage, and it showed 247 - which I found strange as the total mileage on the main odometer only showed 212 !!! How can this be??

I know I could take it back to the dealer and get them to check it with the VAG-COM to see if the total odometer has been reset, but I just wondered if anybody else could explain this, or if anybody has come across this before??

Cheers.

Darren

The dealers are allowed to reset the odometers to clear the miles before delivery. There is some legislation surrounding it which does control it to an extent though...

Rob.

Welcome!

When cars are stored they often need to be moved around. Before they are shipped the milage is often re-set.

A mate of mine used to work for just such a place. They would employ any kid with a license to move the motors around and often these muppets would ding them and would have to be repaired before they went out as a 'new' car. Shocking!

Hi Darren,

Welcome to Briskoda. I believe the dealer has the ability to reset the mileage to remove delivery miles. I seem to remember reading about this before.

Will have a look for you - Rob beat me to it !

 Tell me about it!

Forever seeing damage to brand new cars in the course of my job.

Worst one was a ciggy burn on a brand new fiesta, sold, and hadn't even had the plates put on!

Told them to put a new seat base cover on,but they insisted on me repairing it as it was due out that afternoon!

They were hoping the customer wouldn't see my repair  Muppets!

I like to think I'm fairly good at my job,but I'm not a flamin magician

probably best you don't think about how your car was treated before you bought it to be honest!

I think you will find that the '2' setting is just another mileage setting that you can reset yourself by holding the reset button in. I wouldn't worry about it, as the only true reading is the proper odometer one. AS the others have said, it maybe that the car has been transported from another dealer on trade plates. It is quite common down this way in Essex / London for dealers (especially Ford) to 'swap' cars with eachother.

Anyway, after a few thousand miles I'm sure you'll have forgotten about it !!!

When I had my Galant, the dealer had to check it's date of manufacture, to see if it needed any mods. I was a bit shocked to find out that it was built almost a year before it was purchased.........

My 4X4 was first registered 8 months after the build date.
