Emergency Braking Hazard Lights

Featured Replies

I think i know the answer to this but......... Can this be enabled on the Fabia vRS???

Cheers

Dave.

Now most cars, make that all cars now have a 3rd level brake light.

My sisters 1994 Micra doesn't, my 1995 Astra didnt have one.

My 1998 Felicia does and my Uncles 1990 G plate Volvo had one. (Didn't all Volvos have a 3rd brake light and daylight running lights)

My 95 ZX didn't, and my 97 Xantia did, but it was set below the rear window rather than in or above it.

Ovlovs adopted day running lights and 3rd brake lights before anyone else, even SAAB AFAIK. As for the effectiveness of 3rd brake lights, I've often wondered how much that's because of them being higher, and how much is because they're separate from the tail lights and hence much more visible, particularly with the modern fashion of using dipped headlights even in bright sunlight (which makes me think the driver is stuck with auto lights, or has failed to observe the conditions)!

Only just found this but funnily enough I found this feature on VCDS last weekend whilst doing some logs and enabled the feature too.

Completely forgot I'd done it till yesterday when I hit the brakes hard for a corner (a bit of spirited driving :o) and the hazzards came on but did not go out again automatically as had to disable it manually via the hazzard switch (which would be inconvenient on a track day :P)!

Not decided whether to keep it on but I suppose for the time being I'll leave it.

As for the impression it potentially looking like an electrical fault I find a bit odd because if I saw brake lights and flashing hazzards I'd see it as.......................................wel a hazzard I suppose!

And you don't see brake lights by themselves as being a hazard?

And you don't see brake lights by themselves as being a hazard?
:rofl::rofl: ask the guy who next rear ends someone:D

I see brake lights as an indication of a slowing vehicle and hazard lights as an indication of a hazard so 'call me old fashioned' but I see the two combined as a vehicle is slowing because of a hazard! ;)

and if their brake lights dont work because they didnt do the daily check of their vehicle before commencing driving (and doesnt have a bulb failure warning system either)???

I saw these in action one night.

Just filled up my Felly and was on my way home

2 morons sped past me. One in an Astra sprt hatch the other in a C4 5 door version.

Must have been at least 50-60 in a 30 zone 11pm. Red traffic light ahead, The Astra broke hard and stopped. The C4 broke hard (could tell as the hazards came on) then he even yanked the handbrake as you could hear the wheels lock.

Lights went green and they raced off again and overtook a few cars and a bus further ahead where the road narrowed.

Well as an HGV driver, I can say that it is a widely used form of warning other people behind of slowing traffic.

Im pretty sure its not illegal as they are after all 'hazard warning lights' and you are warning of a hazard...

(and Ken, Im guessing you probably dont drive on the M'ways often as it's used all the time mate!)

See cops do it all the time on the motorways.

Hazzard lights are used on the motorway as a motorway in its self is deemed as a fast moving road, not one to expect at a standstill. when you do see brake lights most assume they are just slowing and that is it. when the realise they are actually at a stop it causes panic braking and somewhere within this you will always end up with another shunt from idiots following to closely to people not realising the traffic is a standstill and cant slow down any quicker than the panic braking car in front.

Therefore to cut all this out you can use you hazzards not only to warn that everything is coming to a standstill a head, but everyone can have a safe and controlled braking towards the hazzard in a safe manner.
