Removed Door Mouldings - Opinions?!?!?

Featured Replies

Guys/Gals,

I've just spent bloody ages removing the door mouldings on my Octy and i'm interested in everyone's opinion?!?

I'm not too fussed about possible damage as I work at a bodyshop i just fancied a slightly more smoothed look.

Don't be worried about offending me, i can take it:D:D.

Looks alrite that

Are they just stuck on then,i might do it to mine

Don't those moldings protect the car from old ladies slamming their doors into yours?

Does look quite good though.

Yeah, there just stuck on with double sided tape!!!!

Wasn't sure about taking them off to start with as a lot of cars have locating holes in the door skin, however I did a quick search on here and found this isn't the case with the Octy.

The only problem I found was that a couple of mine left most of the tape on the door rather than the mouldings!!! This lead to a couple of hours sat on my drive with sore fingers, think it's worth it though?!?

IMHO the mouldings are a little low on the mk1 Octy in the 1st place so i've found marks on the doors above where the mouldings are/were!!

Looks good I think but would look even better with the bumper inserts colour matched. The bumper inserts on mine are more grey than black now so thinking about doing mine soon.

Looks good on a black car and fits well with the badgeless grille.

I wonder how it would look on a red one? :D

How did you begin to prize them off,did you just use your hands?

I did this once to an old Hreg XR3i i used to have, they were stuck on but took half the paint off aswelll

even better on a red one I'd have thought... are they colour coded??

if you heat them gently with a hairdryer it softens the adhesive and they come off much easier...

Yeah that'd worry me on my passenger side as it's been resprayed twice!

(Keyed when new, then shipping damage later :()

Not on the Mk1:

I tried 2 different methods:-

i) Heating with a hairdryer

ii) Pooring boiling water on the moulding

Either method makes it possible to pull the moulding off but neither ensures that the tape stays on the moulding!!!

I wouldn't pour boiling water on my car!!

Iv seen a red octy on here minus door mouldings

But i cant find any pics:(

Rob - Are you sure the door was sprayed with the strip removed? I know it sounds like a cowboy method, but I've seen people mask them when spraying the doors. Might not look so good removed if this is the case!

The first time I think it was masked but the second time I know it was removed as I saw the car with that and the door handle taken off.

TBH Rob, I think it would look too slab sided on a red car.

Looks nice on the black one though :)

What this man says is correct!

I think you're right.

Sometimes I get the urge to change stuff just for the sake of changing it!!

:D

Looks nice without the mouldings. My Mk1 never had any as it was the "Classic" model and does not have them fitted.

I used a hair dryer when I changed the black to chrome side mouldings on my Passat.

A quick tip is to buy a toffee wheel which gets fitted to a drill or something similar. Basically it's a sacrifical wheel which doesn't mark the paint but removes all the adhesive left, then just a quick polish and wax if you're leaving them off.

I had a bigger problem because the previous owner FIXED 2 mouldings that were coming off a little by using super glue!!! Just be aware that you don't know whats underneath but if there are marks you could always buy new mouldings and fit.

HTH.

Toffee wheel? i have never heard of one of those

Looks much better without them to be honest, was one of the first things i did to my car i then had the bumper mouldings smoothed and colour coded

we call them caramel wheels they smell so damn good lol

I still keep meaning to do mine but never get round to it
