Is My Standard VRS Busted?

Featured Replies

…. I ask as the wheels never lose traction in a straight line, right foot to the floor in first and second, even with the traction control switched off.

I must point out that in first gear I am careful not to spin the wheels by dumping the clutch or suchlike, but feed the power in gradually until we are rolling before nailing it (on a private road, naturally).

I feel there are only two possibilities.

1 - My car is not busted and the reason the wheels don’t spin is because the Conti SportContact 2s are doing their job well in getting the power down, alongside some fine suspension.

2 - My car is busted and it lacks the power to spin the wheels.

This is a VRS

Do you see the difference?

As for the issue with your car, I don't see what the problem is. Are you worried your down on power? Has it got worse recently? Are you expecting to have such issues?

Try it again when it rains.

I'd expect a fair bit of wheelspin in first gear with ContiSports, even if its not remapped. Mine used to spin up in 1st when it was standard, even if I fed in the power gently.

Won't matter what tyres you have it should wheel spin

Ah, yes, now I see the difference.

However, I've never seen Charlie and my car in the same place.

Yeah, I was wondering if my car was down on power as the ASR seemed to have little function given the engine's output.

I had been expecting some wheelspin as the dealer I bought it from said it would light up the tyres in first and second.

Perhaps he should have added the proviso, 'only if you abuse the car'.

I'm sorry but my vRS never had wheelspin apart from in the rain and with me trying to do it.

Ah, that's not so good, then.

And it's an 04-plate with only 8000 miles on it.

The previous owner was a retired gent who, judging by the good-as-new front tyres, never drove it hard.

Perhaps the car still thinks he's driving it, although it should have learned my style by now.

Cool.

And I know it's not big or clever to drive like that and I do want to preserve my tyres, but I thought this test would be a good ready reckoner of power output, non?

Interesting.

Seems that some do, some don't.

I wonder why?

Power?

Tyres?

Driver?

Mixture Prob..

Power - Standard vRS + PD160 + Strut Brace.

Tyres - Toyo

Driver - Mad ;)

Result - No wheelspin here.

Possibly.

Though some (Offerman) do seem to be wheelspinning despite feeding in the power gradually.

My car actually feels plenty fast, pulling like a train in the first four gears from 1900 rpm, but it seems at least possible that it could run even better.

Anyways, I've just chucked in a bottle of Redex injector cleaner, so we'll see if that makes any odds.

Probably not, but it's worth a shot.

I've also drawn on a go-faster stripe in Magic Marker, so fingers crossed.

The Redex will do nothing. I still don't see why your using wheelspin as a measure of power. There are too many factors involved for that to be a representation of "power".

If your really concerned take it back to the dealer who will run a diagnostic on it.

BTW I really hope you joking about the marker pen.....

Surely if the injectors were dirty the Redex would clean them and this would restore some lost horses, non?

As I said, the wheelspin factor was only a rough ready reckoner.

I don't really see it WP (wheelspin) overtaking BHP, nm or ft/lbs when talking about engine output.

Be funny if it did, though:

e.g. Porsche 911 Turbo: 450 BHP; 350mn; WP 1st, Second and Third.

As I said, I understand there are likely numerous variables at work:

Power, Tyres and Driver were the three I gave.

Road, Temperature, RPM are others on the no-doubt long, long list.

As I said, the car is plenty fast, so I won't be taking it back to the dealer anytime soon.

I'm told it has done 132mph on a track, so it must be running reasonably well.

However, it is still interesting, anecdotally at least, that there are vRSes out there that, all things being apparently equal, do spin the wheels.

And I'm serious about the stripe!

How can u even think about rating the cars power by how well it wheel spins! Lol, just get it vag com`d or on a RR. mine has done 117k and spins the wheels in first and second with tc off. in the wet it does it with tc on, till its cut lol

No, it will do next to nothing you might as well have used cough mixture. I doubt very much if you have lost any horses in the 8000 miles since new especially not down to any issues with injectors.

You can spin the wheels on anything if you try. I had a 55bhp Panda I could spin no problem. I can also spin the the mighty Punto JTD I own with it's massive 85bhp. My Roomster is the same, it all comes down to how it's driven. If your not worried about the performance then stop trying to fix a problem that doesn't exist with stuff that costs you money and wont do anything. Your better off giving it an Italian tune up.

And I'm serious about the stripe!

Oh dear lord... How is anyone supposed to take you seriously if you do things like that????

Italian style!!!

I never had any problems wheelspinning my 64bhp SDI Fabia...

^ thats a valid point actually, i can spin the wheels in a merc vito at work so a furbi is no problem.

I've only had the the traction light come on twice in the furby.

Once during an aquaplaning "incident" - it did a really good job there.

The other time involved a certain amount of "air"

Deek.

i can spin the wheels in my rwd petrol transit weighing nearly 2.5ton from a standing start, axle tramp too.

does that make me hard?

Mine is on Conti Sport Contact 2s, and i rarely get wheelspin in the dry unless doing something daft and clutch-threatening. It will wheelspin in the wet in first, second, or third if the road is at all greasy though.

The only time I can remember wheelspin in the dry recently was exiting a very tight hairpin bend uphill with the accelerator buried.

Yes, and all the girls will fancy you .

Non. C'est une ready reckoner of how well someone has broken traction. Weight, tyres, road surface, temperature, how suddenly the power is applied.....

Almost anything can be made to wheelspin.

Solid mate.

People with big dogs would run from you....
