Driving in China

Featured Replies

Hi to all,

I'm going to spend whole August in China, as I'm going to Olympic Games. I'm TV journalist. I've been told that some vehicles are already rented for us and we'll be driving them ourselves.

So, if anybody has any experience or knowledge about driving in China, it would help a lot. Like, which side of the road they drive, where to be very careful etc etc...

Thanks

Are you sure you will be driving them. I believe that in order to drive in china you need to have a chinese license. At least one person on here has been to china and he was not allowed to drive in china, despite having a full UK license. His employer provided a driver to drive the car for him.

Here you go.

When I worked there some of the people drove themselves in Beijing but for us we normally were supplied a car and a driver. Which is the safer option should you have a coming together.

You might try using an International license.

The drive on the right (normally) the horn is used liberally, in fact it is a necessity and chaos will prevail.

One of the guys I worked with bought a motorbike and sidecar combination which we used to scream around Beijing on.

He went on holiday with it and got as far as Xian before the authorities turned him and his wife around and put them on a train back to Beijing.

Luckily his wife, although French, spoke fluent Mandarin.

Our driving licences were taken to chinese embassy two months ago to be translated to chinese and issued proper, chinese licences. It's all been organized by EBU (Europen Broadcasting Union) upon request of chinese authorities. You can't even imagine the paperwork they requested. Even the photo for acreditations/visa had to have exact size of face, distance from borders, exact blue background colour and brightness, eyes opening etc etc. I'm dealing with paperwork for two months already and hope they won't ask for anything else. People tell me not to take much clothing as I'll buy there a lot but I doubt it. I'm already fed up of all this mess, before Games even began. Can't wait to get back home.

You could drive there Chinese Octys they got over there:thumbup:
