Cam belt change

Featured Replies

Anybody know if changing the cam belt on a 04 elegance (130 TDI) is a long/difficult job for the dealer as i know that some cars are easier than others.

Also, should I do water pump at same time

Should cost about £300 to do, it is adviseable to do the water pump aswell.

A B5.5 PD cambelt change is not difficult - just tedious.

The fromt of the car has to be pulled into the "service" position and a special tool (available and cheap from Laser tools) is required to lock the crank timing wheel. A drill shank can be used to lock the camshaft. Pattern cambelt kits of better quality than the OE belt are available from GSF.

The PD is easier than the VE diesels as you don't need to hook up VAGCOM to reset the pump timing. The belt tension is also set automatically if the eccentric tensioner wheel is rotated to the position where the pointer is centered on the slot, so no judgement is required.

You should definitely change the rubbish OE water pump for one with a metal impeller - GSF sell them. Putting the front back on takes another hour if you do it carefully - don't forget to re-connect the bonnet catch release cable.

This job needs to be done very carefully as the drive is highly stressed and any inadequacies will end in grief. You also need a good set of tools - VAG take a delight in fitting (say) M6 bolts with as many different heads as it's possible to find - tri-square, torx, internal hex, external hex, pozidrive - all on the same car. Numpties.

rotodiesel.

I got some prices today, at Winchester the price is £335 inc vat, or £415 including a water pump.

Dealer on the IOW wants £300 +vat without pump

And finally JKM Motor Services BRISKODA Partners - JKM Motor Services at BRISKODA.net - BRISKODA - The Skoda Forums quoted me £350 inc vat for belt and pump, using gen VW parts, I will be booking in soon as it's close to me and the unit looks like it's run by ppl who have pride.

The kit including the pump is £90 from German/Swedish & French I seem to remember. Gave the kit to my brother and saved myself £250. Aren't brothers good!!!
